What is the best national park to visit and why?|138793

Do you enjoy the most-visited parks like Great Smoky Mountains or Yosemite, or do you prefer less-visited gems such as Capitol Reef or Theodore Roosevelt?

  • I think that the Olympic National Park in Washington State is absolutely stunning. There_s a rainforest, old growth forest, the Pacific Ocean, Mountains, Native American artifacts, it_s somewhat accessible on trails for wheelchairs, 4 lodges, 4 different visitor centers, and 16 campgrounds.

You can hike, backpack, climb, ski, snowshoe, watch birds, ride horses, and fish.

    And it_s beautiful.

  • Utah has the best. Brice Canyon is awesome (my favorite) but there are several others all near each other. Best in USA.

  • glacier natl park/waterton park beautiful scenery, animals come right up to you just a nice place

  • Yosemite is AWESOME. I_ve never seen anything like it. HUGE rocks and lots of water falls. It is a must see at least once.

Is there any laid back coffee shops in NYC where I could lounge and study for a few hours?|131817

I am looking for a coffee shop preferable in Manhattan where I can lounge and read books for a couple of hours over a cup of coffee.

Everything I_ve been finding so far has wooden chairs and tables with this quick drink and go environment. I haven_t found anything with couches or where lounging is encouraged. Any ideas?

  • What is the normal weather in the western region of the US around the December amp; January?|133921

My husband and I are planning a road trip for about a week a couple days after Christmas. We were going to drive from Tennessee to California. Just wondering what the weather is like normally around that time of the year. I would like to know for any of the states that we are driving through (AK, OK, TX, NM, AZ, _ CO)

  • Hard to say exactly but expect snow _ really cold weather on I-40 from Oklahoma City to Ash Fork AZ.I would definitely carry chains.
As in all winter driving situations the key to success is making sure that you have the capability to safely spend the night in the car should the need arise to do so
btw How did CO get into that mix ?
FYI_I know for a fact that in good weather you can drive Amarillo to Memphis in one day _albeit it_s a long day
    Have a safe trip

  • Yeah this is a dumb place to ask for that kind of info, also i used to live in California, it will be 80 degrees and sunny in so-co but u drive 2-3 hours north and your skiing.

  • Go to weather.com and check out each state. Also each state_s climate is reported in their wikipedia article. I presume you are going on the I-40 most of the way. Expect snow in New Mexico and Arizona because of the altitude. .

What is the best/safest place to live in the United States?|128554

Based upon a worst case scenario and these criteria: away from nuclear power plants, military bases, fault lines, volcanoes, low lying coastal areas and large populations.

Does such a place exist inside the 48?

  • Pittsburgh, PA.

  • Any place you live will have a down side. You cant be paranoid of about all the potentials for disaster. I think if you choose Hawaii (for example) select a safer zone away from the volcano area. Many of the islands have no volcanic activity. California does have earthquakes but some areas are very safe and are not on the fault line and the weather is good. You just have to use some common sense. Oregon has some safe areas!

  • Warwick, RI. We don_t have to worry about any environmental crisises, population of 85808, and as much as we can all get bored of where we live I wouldn_t move anywhere else.

  • I would suggest that your risk perception is very different than the actual risks you incur. For example, being away from large population centers will result in you being far from good hospitals. It could lengthen your commute-- one of the deadliest things in the US (car accidents _ recent research about air pollution in traffic jams).

While nuclear power plants may sound scary, no civilian in the US has ever been documented as dying from nuclear power-- and their relative risk (e.g. calculated odds from cancer) are likely far lower than those of coal plants.

If you do make your decision on this, I would suggest researching which states/regions have the longest life expectancy. Then I would diet and exercise. That_s probably a much bigger deal than volcanoes.

  • Central Louisiana No hurricanes No Tornadoes No Fires No Earth Quakes No Crime No Humidity No Mosquito_s No Water Shortage !

  • Yes... some places in the south... Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky, even West Virginia maybe...
  • How long before warped tour tickets will sell out?|119959

Based on last year or whatever, give me an estimate. And I am asking about the show at Uniondale.

  • They usually don_t sell out.
I went to the one in Atlanta, which drew a pretty huge crowd, and it didn_t even sell out.

I bought tickets at the gates, day of.

As you probably already know, Warped Tour takes place in a venue, like a huge parking lot, so it can_t really sell out.
  • Why do people from Boston rave about it then move to Florida and Texas?|120440

You can talk to a yankee here in Dallas and all they talk about is great New York is or Boston yet you could not pull them back to the North with a steam roller. Go figure.

  • Come to Boston today, you wouldn_t stay either. It was 16 degrees when I woke up this AM.

One thing about New Englanders - they *********. about everything. Just tell them if they don_t like it, go back to Boston. No place is perfect.

  • Because the only reason anyone ever moves to Florida is because they dont know how to handle the cold. It_s sad really.

  • Just like everyone else says...weather...snow, ice, wind and cold!

But, add in very high state taxes, sky high property _ property taxes and high heating bills to the wonderful weather....and now you have the answer why people move south.

When you retire and income is less, you cannot afford to live up there...and the warmer weather is sure a lot easier on the old bones!

  • Probably for the same reason, when southerners move north and then complain about things. But they won_t leave because they_re actually making a decent living. Complaining is part of human nature.
  • Which was the faster and cheaper way to go Kansas City from Chicago Airport and how much will be pay?|159499

We want to go to Kansas city from Chicago airport on April 6th about 4:30PM but don_t know which was the faster and cheaper way, by train or by taxi or by airplane? And how much, do you have an idea?

  • Considering that they are over 500 miles apart, I_d probably rule out taxi.

A quick check on Amtrak_s website shows a one-way fare for that day at $65 at around 7 hours (or cheaper if you want to leave that morning, take 12 hours, and change trains in St Louis).

If you book right now, Southwest shows some fares even cheaper than those from Midway. Those all run in the hour-and-a-half range.

Of course to narrow it down more, we_d need to know if this is round trip or one way, if round trip when you wanted to head back, and which Chicago airport (Midway or OHare) you mean.

Other points to keep in mind: KC_s airport is well away from the city center - make sure you have arranged for transportation ahead of time. KC_s Amtrak station is in Union Station, in the heart of midtown. Mass transit in KC consists of the busses, and that_s it (though it is a decent bus system). Most of the time, if you need a taxi, you_ll need to call a dispatcher - there are not a lot of places you can just hail a cab. And KC has a lot of sprawl to it.

  • Definitely check out the Southwest flights. They_re the cheapest around and getting to Chicago will take one short hour. Have fun!

  • How far is the Toyota Center from Bush airport? I am thinking of going to a concert there but will be flyin?|143641

I am in Michigan but want to see a concert at the Toyota Center. Is it best to fly into Bush international and take a cab ?

  • The cab will be pretty pricey down here.
If you have a friend who could give you a ride you should take them up on it.
It_s about a 30 minute drive and the cab fare will probably be pushing $40-50.

If you could catch a shuttle to a downtown hotel (like the Hyatt or Double Tree) you might come out ahead.

Oh, one more thing. You could catch a ride on Metro. The bus lines run to the downtown area and the fare is only about $2. It will be a longer trip in, but much cheaper.

  • You could look for a shuttle service but MOST go to just the fancy hotels. DO try
    http://supershuttle.com.
If worse comes to worse a cab is your best bet. At least you_re not driving lol.

  • Total distance is about 22 miles from Bush. It_s a little closer to Hobby Airport if you_ve got a choice of airports. It_ll probably take you 30-35 minutes, depending on traffic. Yes, a cab would be your best bet, other than renting a car yourself. There isn_t much public transportation otherwise.

  • Not sure where CK got her numbers from, but it will take you 30-40 minutes to get from Bush to the Toyota Center, which is located downtown.

I would agree that Hobby airport is much closer, but the only major carrier there is Southwest.

  • Hobby is closer to downtown but Bush is the bigger airport. If at all possible, you should rent a car in case you_d like to do something other than go downtown.

I need to get from Newark to the Philly sports complex by train. How do i do it?|122817

I fly in to Newark on thursday afternoon and i wiold like to take in the Flyers game thursday evening.

  • You_ll take an Amtak train and use the SEPTA subway in Philly.

From the Newark (NJ) Airport, follow the signs to the Amtrak trains. You will go up one level, pass through the fare gates and go down one level onto the Amtrak train platforms. It takes approximately 5 minutes to get from AirTrain to the Amtrak train platforms. Take a train to the 30th Street Station stop in Philadelphia.
There are two afternoon trains out of the airport to Philly.

From the 30th Street Station, transfer to the SEPTA Subway:

You_ll need to take the Market Frankford Line (blue) eastbound toward Frankford Terminal, get off at the 15th _ Market Street Stop and transfer to the Broad Street Line (orange) southbound toward Pattison. Get off at the last southbound stop, Pattison Avenue. Wachovia Center is right there.

What is the easiest way to get from St.Charles to Downtown using public transportation?|155644

I will be in St.Louis area soon and I wont be able to rent a car. I am wondering where I should stay that would be easiset and most affordable to get around to see the sights.

  • find a hotel there in downtown st louis. it_ll be somewhat expensive to get from st. charles by public transportation (especially a cab!) because it_s about 25 miles _ 30-45 minutes from downtown.

  • If you have to stay in St. Charles the best thing I can say is use to use this web site

It will show the schedule for the buses and the meto link here, plus you can use trip finder ans plan a trip with it. If you do not have to stay in St. Charles downtown would be the best place to stay with useing the website for help.

  • I_d take the bus to the closest Metrolink station (probably the airport station) and then take the metrolink downtown. Try their website, you can plan your whole trip on there. They seem to be on time everytime I_ve ridden it.

Public transportation from hotel to Universal Studios, Disneyland and Los Angeles airport?|110820

I am planning a vacation for Los Angeles and I am wondering which 1 star hotel to stay (so that the stay is inexpensive). I am planning to goto Univ studios _ Disneyland. Which hotel would be ideal to all these fun places and most importantly close to the airport? Any insight on public transportation to Univ studios and Disneyland will be helpful. Thanks

  • Motel 6 is about the cheapest. Its just about 2 miles from LAX and offeres shuttle service. If you have the shuttle take you back to LAX there are buses and shuttles to take you to those places. For Universal, under the Blue sign and shuttle bus _G_. That will take you to the Green line Metrorail. Take the green, then the blue then the Red directly to Universal. For Disneyland from LAX, go to the Orange sign for shuttles (Super Shuttle and Primetime Shuttle) or Disneyland has a BIg bus that leaves every 30 minutes under the Green sign.

  • Public transportation is not as it is in say... New York or London. So you will probably have more luck just catching a cab, or walking. But if you are patient, you can get around using the bus system. Also, a lot of hotels will have a _shuttle_ for people staying there...

  • well the parks are pretty far from eachother (about a one or two hour in car(no traffic))
Then the airport is closer to universal about 30m-1hour away. alot further from disneyland tho.

  • I suggest you find some other places to visit in L.A. - you will just be seeing the tourist-y side and nothing of the real L.A.

  • You need a car. If your destination is not on the trolley line, you_ll waste hours waiting for or riding the bus.

Some must see attractions are the world famous Zoo, Sea World, and Balboa Park. Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the country. You can get a park passport which allows you entry to a dozen museums as well as the zoo.

Not sure where you_re coming from, but there_s lots of scammers here, just be aware.
Check out the police blotters in the areas you intend to visit. Obviously some places are better than others, but it_s not always easy to tell.
Some of the beach areas have their fare share of surfer punks that are a bit territorial. Lotta tweakers in San Diego, too (meth heads).
    California is weird.

    Have fun.

  • Bring a camera, first of all. There are so many beautiful things to take photos of here in San Diego!

And yes, a car is seriously recommended, especially if you_re only visiting for a few days. San Diego is BIG and while we do have a decent public transit system, it can be time consuming to use.

I_d also recommend ponying up the money for the Old Town Trolley Tour. It_s an awesome way to learn a LOT about San Diego in very little time. I_ve lived here my whole life and still learned stuff about San Diego when I went on the tour a couple years ago. Rates are around $30 per person, I think, but well worth the cost!

If you_re a member of AAA, go to your local office and get a tour book. Those things are immensely helpful in finding out of the way and little-known _locals_ places to visit.

Finally, no matter what you do, enjoy your stay!

  • MUST HAVE CAR!!!

Taxi_s are crazy expensive. San Diego is a series of suburbs. It is not like the Bay Area, Chicago, NY, Boston, Philly etc... You must have a car to do most of San Diego tourist stuff. There is minimal if any public transportation.

We_re going for 7 days in mid-May and have a pretty tight budget, so, besides the beach, what should we do? Also, is it possible to hike up Diamond Head without getting a guide? What about the other hiking trails? Are trail guides mandatory or can we just go by ourselves?

    Any other tips are appreciated!

  • There are a lot of hiking trails, all free. Start with a buss pass
    Go to TheBus.org

    http://www.thebus.org/Fare/visitoradultf

    http://www.thebus.org/Fare/FarePasses.as

The Sierra Club_s website, and links to Koko Crater, Koko Head and the Koko Head Botanical Garden are on this page

    http://honolulu.hawaiihome.biz/2009/02/h

Email any questions to me. Take the beach to Sandy Beach and Makupu_s Lighthouse (another free hike). Be careful and Sandy Beach and Makapu_u Beach, the waves are sometimes dangerous.

You can also ride around most of the island on the bus, normally $2, or free with the pass.

  • Diamond Head is not free.

  • Diamond head is free and no guide is needed. Actually you don_t need guides at any of the hiking trails. When hiking a long time ago when I was little my family and I would just head on up the trails ourselves.

Just this March three of my friends and I went hiking alone.

So, in short, you don_t need a guide for hiking trails.
  • How difficult is it to find a restroom in Las Vegas?|123598

I am traveling there soon and would like to know if I should take this in to consideration. If you are drinking on the strip or in a casino, is it difficult to find a restroom? Are they readily available? I would hope so since there is so much drinking going on. Because I like beer, but have to go every 10 minutes or so after I have had a few.

  • Yeah, the restrooms are everywhere here.

  • Readily available all along the strip. Never be afraid to ask someone where the location of the restrooms are because they are sometimes difficult to find. In the very low humid, high temperatures you will drink more water and will cause even more use. Add to that the alcohol intake and you will be a very knowledgeable person on restroom locations. Take care in that you are entering the correct restroom. The best rest rooms are at Caesars.

  • There are restrooms in all of the casinos, but don_t wait until you can_t stand it any longer because the casinos are huge and the washrooms, while there are tons, are not always at the entrance and sometimes difficult to find.

  • I had this situation a couple weeks ago in vegas. If yure on the strip just pop into a hotel you_ll easily find a restroom anywhere

  • Come on!! Of course Casinos and almost every restaurant along the strip has a restroom or even dozens!!! Where do you think people go when they have to go???
I_d see a doctor about having to go so often though!

  • There are multiple bathrooms in every casino, but find out where they are before you need them.

  • my boyfriend and I were there in march, and can probably say we used nearly the loo in almost every hotel along the strip!

  • Not hard at all.

You cant walk 20 yards without passing a hotel or casino. And they are always open to the public.

  • Plenty of restrooms in the casinos. I never have problems finding a place to go. You shouldn_t etiher.

  • Depends?

    http://vacation-in-vegas.com

  • Well hello every casino has a restrooms in them and u can use them.....

  • they are easily accesible in each hotel!! I recently went and i swear to u, my bathroom trips let me have a glimpse inside each casino!! Good luck!!
  • What is the policy at San Jose State University regarding cameras during concerts?|196935

I_m going to a concert there tonight and I have a medium-sized digital camera, and I was wondering if it_d be okay to take it in. Thanks to anyone who can help! (:

  • The use of cameras is generally more of a concern for the promoters and artist. This is out of efforts to protect their intellectual property rights and their livelihoods. SJSU would be concerned about the safety of the attendees. Flash photography may have some issues with causing temporary blindness that could lead to injuries.

  • I_m not that sure... but I think you could.
  • What is the most popular sport in California?|173361

Bay area-ish. San Fran, Berkeley, Oakland. That area.

What is most popular to watch and to play?

  • Okay SURFING is a hudge sport in CA love it have to do it every day. Also you will find that sports on the X-games are big here. Why because it is Cali!!!!!

  • Californicating

  • surfing is not nearly as big in the bay area as it is in southern california. the waters up here are colder and much much more treacherous.

in terms of watching the most popular things in san francisco are still good old baseball and football. Oakland is decidedly a football town. Basketball is not as big here because the warriors have been bad for so long.

in terms of what people play, I think soccer, frisbee, hack-a-sack, and skating are things you_ll see more of here than the rest of the u.s.
  • What is a good hotel on fifth avenue in New York?|114802

I am going during the middle of July. There will be one adult and two children(teenagers under 18) and we would like a room that is nice and does not cost an arm and a leg.

  • Hey!

Same as with your last question.

You can always try Priceline. I use it all the time and get nice 3 - 4 star hotels right in Midtown Manhattan all the time. You have to _name your own price_. There is a web site which tells you the method of getting the very best deal on a high quality hotel room in NYC and explains exactly how to do this with Priceline. Go to the section on _Cheap Hotels in the City_ or something like that.

    http://www.CheapInTheCity.com

    Have fun and good luck!

  • Not possible.

I_m sorry, I know that doesn_t answer your question. I_m not trying to be obnoxious. But seriously, a reasonably-priced hotel on 5th Avenue will be FAR north, not really the ideal location you_re hoping for. If you get a better recommendation, look up its location carefully. If it_s not below 96th street, then you_re not really where you want to be at all.

If you_re willing to negotiate as to your location, you could try Bed and Coffee (
    http://www.bedandcoffee.com/)
in the East Village, which is a really good location though not 5th Ave. It is very reasonably priced.

    Good luck!

Whats a good moving company to use for Detroit to Boston?|122052

I have a one bedroom apartment, with a good a amount of furniture in it, to move. In a couple weeks I need to get everything from Detroit to Boston and I_m wondering what would be a quality company to use. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • I used ABF U-Pack Moving recently when I moved. They worked out pretty well and would use them again if I ever have to move again - I hope not! But they were cheaper than a rental truck when I added the gas in. With U-Pack you pack and load but the company drives - ABF. I thought I had heard of ABF before and when I thought about using them I saw them all over the place. Funny how that works. Hope this helps. Their website is http://www.upack.com.

  • What are the French Quarters like in New Orleans after katrina?|111540

My boyfriend and I want to visit the French Quarters in New Orleans. Is the area alright to travel in after Katrina? I_d really like to see everything first hand, but I was just wondering.
    Any comments help!

  • The French Quarter is pretty much the same as it was before Katrina. There was no flooding in the French Quarter, only wind damage. The Quarter is one of the older parts of the city, and sits on higher ground than some of the parts that flooded. Oddly enough, as you travel downtown toward the Mississippi River, the less the flooding. If you drive down Canal St. toward the River, you can see the waterlines on the buildings gradually getting lower as you get nearer the river.

  • The parts of the city that tourists usually visit were not flooded. It_s not a coincidence - the French Quarter and other old parts of the city were built on relatively high ground and only suffered wind damage from Katrina. Almost all of the damage has been repaired and you have to look closely in the FQ and city center to see that Katrina happened at all.

You should visit and see for yourself.

  • The French Quarter in New Orleans escaped from Katrina virtually undamaged. I traveled there last year and they were totally normal, albeit probably a little quieter and with less tourists than pre Katrina. However, there are other parts of town that are still pretty much destroyed, there are even tours that go out to see the wreckage if you_re interested.

  • I go to New Orleans often, and it is great. There are still areas under construction in the French Quarter, but mainly, it is back to normal. The FQ did not really flood, so it was cleaned and going faster than the other areas.

  • The French Quarter was hardly touched. There is no sign of any damage that I saw last year when I went.

  • The French Quarter was hardly damaged at all.

  • It_s the same. It_s going outside of the _touristy_ areas that you have to watch out for.

  • i live in new orlenas and its gooodd(:
its not bad at all. trust me(:
    itss funnnnn.

How many coffee shops are there in Seattle?|187935

I_m doing research for some students and am trying to find out how many coffee shops, stands, cafes... (Starbucks, Tullys, SBC, independent...) are actually in Seattle. Would really appreciate a source also. Thank you in advance!

  • goggle maps list 9,368 - although having lived in Seattle I_d say that is a conservative estimate.

  • I don_t drink coffee

  • Oh, dear God--where to begin. You can_t swing a dead cat without hitting one. There are actually intersections with one on every corner. I would estimate that if NYC has 100,000 restaurants, that Seattle has about half that many coffee shops, counting the entire Metro area and everything that could be considered a _coffee shop._ Coffee is a way of life in Seattle nowadays--the _latte lifestyle,_ if you will.

  • How many street corners are there in Seattle?

  • Which block are we talking about? Where is there NOT a coffee shop!?!

  • The coffee addicted capital of the world,_SEATTLE_Wa.

  • You could probably find out by contacting the chamber of commerce.
  • What is the best/safest place to live in the United States?|130159

  • Just curious. Who has driving distance of over an hour to work and how is it like? How do you manage?|162444

Im asking because, Im trying to decide weather or not to take a job?. The distance from where i live right now is 1 and half hours. I live in a really small town in michigan and there are barely any jobs around here and the nearest is in bigger cities. I dont know weather I should do this or not. I was planning on moving to Kalamazoo michigan which is 40 minutes from the job but wont be moved in until end of july. What is your suggestion. Thanx in advance

  • Hi there!
I_ve driven anywhere from 30 minute to 1 hr 45 minutes (15 min. of traffic) to get to work!
In all honesty, it gets very monotonous unless you have nice scenery or countryside to travel through (not likely though!)
I would suggest moving, because you_ll save yourself some piece of mind, some sleep, some sanity, and when its all said and done- quite a bit of gas money!

How did i manage? Audio books on tape..I found that I was stimulating my brain as well as passing time..(just make sure to watch the road though! haha)
I also just listened to the radio, NPR, cds, XM, that type of thing..or pretend that whatever song came on next I was going to sing like I was auditioning for american idol.
(yes..i got weird looks, but the time passed)

Best of luck to you :)

  • Thanks for the advice, It really helped me with my long drive I had to my interview. Dont know if I got the position yet.!!!!

  • Don;t know what whay kind of job, but can you work from home?
Lots of people do that now instead of commuting.

  • I will say get it! I did not have a car so I needed to take the bus. The bus takes 2 hrs TWO LONG HOURS! in a car just 30 min. I did it and thanks to that I was able to buy a car!

  • Well I drive about 45 minutes to work, and well if you aint used of it then you might not like it. I mean get some tunes to listen to, take ur phone wit u, it took me about 5 months to get used of the long drive but now its nothing, 45 minutes breezes by and i dont even care about how long it takes. You will get used of it in time. Hope this helps ya out and good luck on ur job if u get it.

  • I do. I leave my home at 745am drive my boys (4,1) to grammas for day care, then go to work on the opposite side of town. I don_t mind cause I drive a Hyundai which saves on gas, but the travel time is terrible if I don_t get my coffee first! Do you value sleeping in? Or can you go to bed early?

By organizations I mean all businesses, nonprofit organizations, and advocacy groups. This is really urgent, so please help me to find a resource that has this information.

  • You can do searches for non-profits at GuideStar by location (_advanced search_ by state -- includes D.C. -- and/or city, such as Baltimore); however, you_d have to enter suburban cities for Washington, D.C. to be most inclusive of the Metro D.C. area (like Arlington or Alexandria, VA, etc.), if that is your request/need.

  • Looking for a safe part of Moreno Valley to buy a house?|108089

We_ve been looking for houses in Moreno Valley, but they seem like such bad areas compared to where we live now. Most of the houses look beautiful, but the people look dirty and disruptive, and I checked the crime rate on most of the addresses and they weren_t that great, although it wasn_t absolutely horrible. Can someone please tell me some safe parts of Moreno Valley, or how I can know when the realtor takes us to a home if it_s a good neighborhood or not?

  • I used to work as a paramedic in moreno valley a couple years ago before I moved to Texas. I responded to all kinds of calls throughout the city. Moreno Valley has nice parts and bad parts. Its pretty much split. The thing about moreno valley is that there are a lot of thuggish people in that city that are straight from the hood of compton and south central LA that were forced out in the 90s when the government came in and bought their houses out to build the 105 freeway that goes through the middle of south Central LA. The thug people live in really nice houses that they are barely able to afford. I lived down south and up north. Up north (off of 60 freeway and Day Street) the neighborhood is decent but had drug dealing neighbors so go figure. Down south (Laselle and Iris) it is a lot nicer. the west side and central isnt all that great. It is not as nice as rancho cucamonga or murrieta/temecula but not as bad as san bernardino. Moreno Valley definitely has its fair share of crime though so just make sure you research the house or apartment before you go there. If you want more help email me
    damon.fogley@us.army.mil

  • It_s really not hard at all to tell if you have a safe neighborhood or not. Things to watch out for:

Tennis shoes on the telephone wires (drugs sold here).
    Bars on the windows
    Yards overgrown (foreclosed home/absent tenant)
Lots of foreclosed homes in the area
    Graffiti
Old junky cars parked on the street
One really nice car amongst old junky cars in the street.

    Good luck

  • Look in other areas! The I.E. has good areas Like Rancho Cucamonga, Riverside has nice parts. I have not heard good things about Moreno Valley. But there_s areas near it that may be better than Moreno. You should maybe consider that!!

What is the best way to drive from LA to San Fran?|185552

Never been to CA, and we are flying into LA. We really want to go to San Francisco, but it is at least a 6 hour drive on I-5. We also want to drive the PCH for the view but I have heard that can take 12 hours. Any advice from someone that has done it, or lives there what the best alternative is? Any good sites along the way? Any campsites along the way?

  • Someone needs to tell _Tommy_ that Hwy 1 does run along the West Coast. I guess that some people refer to 1 as the _Pacific Coast Highway_, but I grew up calling it 1, and the other one 101. At some points 1 and 101 intermingle, 1 is the most scenic, breathtaking views of the ocean and at times sheer drops. 101 is scenic but cuts inland at some points.101 is roughly based on the old Franciscan Monk, Father Junipero Serra_s foot trail which paved the way for the chain of Spanish Missions up and down California. 101 does not follow it exactly, but The Father Junipero Serra Trail was the foundation for traffic up and down the coast side of California. You can see old Spanish style bells hanging along areas that follow the original path.
When you leave LA and head north, you should plan a visit to Santa Barbara. SB is a beautiful town right on the coast. After leaving SB there are so many things to see. Mission La Purisima in Northern Santa Barbara County, west of Santa Ynez is a wonderfully preserved and restored old Spanish mission. It is a part of the state park system with historic recreations of the mission life which includes the Native American slave quarters and many other interesting displays. Solvang is near as well, off 101, a pseudo Danish village. Quite touristy, but a nice stop. There is also a miniature horse ranch in Los Olivos. This is wine country, so you might want to visit a few wineries and vineyards.
    http://www.beachcalifornia.com/losoliv.h

There are many places to camp along the way, including Grover Beach, where you can drive onto the beach, south of Pismo Beach. You probably would like to stop in San Luis Obispo and visit the downtown, which is centered around the old mission and San Luis Obispo Creek. SLO is a college town but very family oriented and friendly. If you are there on a Thursday, the downtown is closed off for its weekly farmer_s market and quasi festival starting at about 5pm. From SLO you can cut out to the coast to Morro Bay. Hwy 1 runs parallel to a chain of extinct volcanoes which ends with Morro Rock, the core of an old volcano. There are places to camp and visit in Morro Bay. From there you can take 1 up the coast. Cambria is a cute little town to visit, Moonstone Beach, San Simeon, where you can visit and tour Hearst Castle. If you would like to do that I have heard that you need to reserve ahead of time. You are not allowed to drive right up to it, but they bus you up the hill instead. From there you can take 1 up to Big Sur where there are more camping spots, then Carmel, Monterey, Santa Cruz. You can visit many beaches and find many camping spots around Santa Cruz, but I have heard that Big Basin has some beautiful campgrounds. After Santa Cruz there is Half Moon Bay, then Pacifica, then SF. I know that I have left out many things and places but there are too many to go into detail. It takes about seven hours on Hwy 1 between SLO and SF. 101 takes four, but for the real tour of California you will miss out on a lot. That section of 101 basically goes through an agricultural valley, there are more missions along the way, but not directly off 101, minus Mission San Miguel, but I believe that it may be closed due to earthquake damage. There are two lakes around that part of Northern SLO Co. Lake San Antonio and Nacimiento. I honestly think that you will have a much more enjoyable drive if you take the coastal Hwy. I left out so many beaches and places to visit, but you will have to plan another trip.

If you were to take I-5, basically you would miss out on all of what I described and your drive would have a lovely view of endless cattle fields. Not exactly that pleasant.
I hope that this info helps. Enjoy your visit.

  • We took the PCH from San Diego to just south of San Francisco, where the Laguna Seca racewat is. It is definitely a much better drive than the 5, but it is also much longer. There are great views all along the way and great little towns to stop by at and get things to eat, etc. As for campsites, I have not idea, sorry.

  • If you wanna get there fast, I_de take the 5 north to the 152 West, to the 101 North, it_d take about 51/2 hours versus taking the 101 North which takes about seven and a more scenic route, it_s up too you.

  • I live in SoCal and went to SFSU for 3 years...

I agree with the earlier poster about taking the 5 north to the 152 west, to the 101 north....I always went this way when driving back up to SF after being at home during my school breaks. It was the fastest and not as boring as just taking the 5 all the way up.......

  • Interstate 5 is the faster south-north alternative to the PCH and Route 101.

    - If you just want to get there as quickly as possible, Interstate 5 is the only option. But I_ve never heard of anyone covering the 400 miles between Los Angeles and San Francisco in less than 5 hours. And even that entails no traffic and speeding most of the way there (80 MPH). There_s very little to see on this boring road through the farm belt. On the plus side, however, the city will look like a wonderful mirage after several hours in purgatory.

    - If you want jaw-dropping scenery, then you need to stick with the Pacific Coast Highway. It_ll take at least 12 hours though, and you should have a good driver at the helm. You will encounter lots of high cliffs and extremely narrow stretches. You will receive the reward of cruising along California_s most exciting and romantic road.

There are many motels and campgrounds along the highway, but you should always call before leaving Los Angeles. PCH to San Francisco is a very popular roadtrip for Southern Californians, and lodging tends to fill up quickly.

    - Route 101 shares a part of its journey with PCH, but it goes somewhat inland after San Luis Obispo. At around 8-9 hours, it_s a nice trade-off between nice scenery and time. You_ll get to see Santa Barbara at least.

However, the downside is you_ll miss some of the most spectacular attractions along the Central Coast (Hearst Castle, Big Sur State Park, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk).

  • Personally, if I were driving it, I would go the coast hwy (US1). I have driven that road from the WA area, all the way to LA. There isn_t an unpleasant area anywhere.

  • you can take 101 it will cut back and forth between coast and inland, only one toll i think too

  • Personally, I don_t know, just don_t call it _san fran_

  • Someone needs to tell Robert above that US 1 runs on the East Coast from Maine to Florida. I suspect he may be referring to US 101

  • Take 5 to 101, follow 101 all the way up to SF

  • If you possibly can, take California State Route 1 (also known as Hwy 1). Big Sur might be a good place to camp:

  • What is appropriate to wear to the Drury Lane Theatre in Chicago?|108271

I_m going with some kids from my high school drama club to see xanadu, and I am not sure if the theater is casual dress or formal.

We are going on a saturday night, if that affects your answer.

I would really appreciate any insight that you have to this problem! Thanks!

  • Moderate formal wear. So you don_t need high end fashion, but don_t dress like a bum.

  • From my experiences at the Drury Lane, it tends to lean more to the semi-formal area. Jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers are definitely not appropriate, but you don_t need to go all out either. Think nice dress shoes with some khaki or black slacks and a nice button up shirt, maybe even with a tie, for guys. Heels, or at least nice flats, black pants and a nice top, or even a nice dress for girls. It_s a gorgeous theater and the food is good if you get a chance to eat there!
  • What is an affordable but nice beach in the Georgia area?|109045

My boyfriend and I want to plan a week-long(ish) trip to the beach this summer within driving distance of our home in Georgia. We are already familiar with most beaches in Georgia and were looking at places nearby in South Carolina/Florida/etc.

Does anyone know of a relatively affordable yet nice (not trashy) beach in the area we_re looking? We_re college students so money is an issue. We definitely do not want to go to Myrtle Beach in SC or Panama City Beach in FL because they have gone downhill over the years.

  • Check out Tybee Island, GA or Hilton Head Island, SC.

Which of the NC beaches is the quietest and least developed?|160973

My family and I want to rent a home for a week this summer off the coast of North Carolina. I want something quiet and non-commercialized, but not difficult to get to by car. Any suggestions?

  • Anything that is easy to get to by car is developed.

If you have four wheel drive, drive north to Corolla. When the road ends keep driving up the beach to Cordova.
  • What is traffic like in the morning from DC to Baltimore?|129755

I_m desperate to find work and see plenty of jobs in Baltimore. I_ve lived in DC my whole life but always worked within the city. I know the Beltway is a horrible horrible traffic nightmare, but can I get a rough estimate of how long it_d take to get from NW DC to Baltimore during the morning commute?

  • Shooting up I-295 can get you from NW DC to Baltimore in 40-50 minutes even in rush hour, without ever using the DC or Baltimore beltways.

50 to 97 also works, maybe 45-55 mins

95 works too, but i avoid it, too many accidents and speed traps.

its not an hour heading north, even in bad traffic. it can take you as long to drive from NW DC to arlington.

  • You may want to consider driving to BWI, or other areas in Anne Arundel County, and taking the light rail into Baltimore City.

BTW, I_d like to know what kind of jobs your talking about. When I look at accounting jobs, I see Washington has about 10 times that of Baltimore.

I live in new york, and I_m wondering what people usually wear in palm springs, california? I heard its a dessert, and I dont want to look awkward. Im going to palm springs in early november. Also, how cold is it there? What are the weather flunctuations? Is it okay to wear boots and stuff? Do people wear high heels all the time also, or are flip flops okay?

  • Laid back and casual. Sandals or sneaks or boots or crocs, jeans or khakis or leggings or whatever_s comfy, and whatever works on top (tanks, t_s, sweaters, hoodies ...)

It_s a desert, so bring your lip balms and lotions, because you_ll need them. Plan on being thirsty all the time from the dry air, which will suck every molecule of possible moisture from your entire body.

As for looking awkward, this is California - remember? The land of anything goes, the land of flakes, fruits and nuts. We_re just one big, happy bowl of granola out here, so I_m sure you_ll fit right in no matter what you wear, but if you go for classic pieces that fit well and are comfy, you_ll be just fine. If you do want to make a statement, however, make it with your shoes, and your jewelry. One thing you won_t need is a blazer of any kind, or any kind of fitted jacket unless you_re here for business, or unless it looks rockin_ with a pair of jeans and some strappy high heeled sandals.

As for how cold it_ll be, plan on warm days into the 70_s or possibly up into the 80_s, but brisk nights into the 50_s (well, the 50_s are brisk to us Los Angelenos, anyway).

Keep your eye on this site
    http://www.psview.com/weather/
the closer you get to your date for travel. We do, on occasion, get rain but not usually in November, so it_s not likely ... but it_s possible. I just looked in on the almanac, and today it was 69 degrees in Palm Springs, but a year ago it was over 100, and 2 years ago it was in the high 90s. Maybe you can enter the dates you plan to travel and see how it_s been for the last 5 years for an idea of what to expect. That_s an idea :D

    Have a great time !!

    Your Fashionista Weathergirl

  • By November, it_s warm during the day (high 70s to low 80s) and quite cold at night (40s). My sister lives down there and when I visit I usually take a pair of jeans and a pair of shorts, a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and a leather jacket. I truly change my clothes in the evening as it starts to cool down because the temp differences are so much more extreme than L.A. You_d like fine in boots and stuff but people are generally more laid back (Tommy Bahama style) in Palm Springs than they are in L.A. so I_d just focus on casual wear if I were you.

  • a lot of summer clothes its freaken hot there
  • How can i go to niagara falls without entering canada ?|107204

My friends and I planned a trip to Niagara falls this week end. So, I searched the location in the Google maps[from the location 630 Merrick street, Detroit, MI 48202]. From the traveling directions, one of the direction was given as partially entering Canada and after 2-3 directions it was again entering United States. Is it necessary for me to get a Visa when entering Canada here.
Is it possible to get traaveling directions without entering Canada.
Are there any sightseeing places before going to Niagara falls.

  • Since you_re driving and not flying, and as long as you this before the end of this year, you each only need a drivers license or DMV ID and birth certificate. You can also use a passport, which you will need starting in January. The view of the falls is much better from the Canadian side, so if you want a good view of the falls, you_ll want to enter Canada anyway.

But if you want to drive entirely in the US, take I-75 south to I-90 east. Once you get into New York, take exit 53 for I-190 North. Take the exit for Niagara Falls Blvd. and follow the signs to the business district and falls. This route does add about 150 miles and 2 1/2 hours to your trip though, as opposed to the one that goes through Canada.

  • I am curious why you do not want to enter Canada. Are you an American citizen? if so, you do not need either a visa or a passport to enter Cnaada. You can see the Falls from the American side, but the best views and most things to do are on the Canadian side.

  • you do not need a visa to enter Canada but i believe you do need a passport....notwithstanding you can get to Niagara falls without going thru Canada...when i checked yahoo maps i entered Niagara falls NY as the destination and it shows a southern route which looks fairly straightforward...try it

  • Stay on the United States side-you get a better view of the falls from there anyway!

  • Yes, Niagara Falls, NY is just north of Buffalo, NY. If you are in Michigan, it means coming down through Ohio, PA, and up into NY, but it_s worth it for a nice trip! Buffalo has many things to do, and if you want to go east, Rochester and the Finger Lakes are also nice (if you have time, Letchworth State Park is beautiful in the fall).

  • Assuming you are American, no you do not need a visa to visit or enter Canada. You may need a passport, and definitely will have to have photo identification (drivers license). To get to Niagara Falls, New York (there is Niagara Falls, Ontario), you will have to drive through Ohio south of Lake Erie. It may be longer, but it is definitely possible.
  • How do you get to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC by train?|104422

I have to go there for one of my social studies projects and I_m verry confused lol. I_m in Brooklyn btw.

  • Take the 4 or 5 express trains to 86th St. and walk west to 5th Ave. On 5th go left for a couple blocks to the Museum.

The 6 train is the local and it will stop on 77th and from there you can go west to 5th Ave. Then go right to the Museum.

Your choice. Either way allow 15 minutes for the walk to 5th Ave, it_s not a short walk.

  • The 4,5,6 train is the only one that goes up the east side. Take the 6 train to 77th St station, walk west to 5th avenue, then up 5th avenue to the Met at 82nd.
  • Where is the best place to live in the northern California area?|105782

My boyfriend and I are thinking about moving to California from Connecticut. We like hiking, camping, and spending time outdoors. We would also like to live somewhere relatively inexpensive, and be able to find jobs fairly quickly.
    All help is greatly appreciated!

  • Hi,

I live in Sparks, Nevada(born _ raised), but I used to live in Carmel, CA.-It is beautiful, near Big Sur-I can_t get enought of the ocean! But...very expensive-I also lived at Lake Tahoe(nevada side-Incline Villlage)Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places you will ever see--unbelievable lake surrounded by mountains, and small towns,ie;.-On the California side there_s Kings Beach,Tahoe City,(just to name a few) -and Truckee, CA are all in the general vicinity-Depending where you live it can be very expensive or rustic and very reasonable-But if you are into the outdoors you can_t beat the views and fresh air!

    Good Luck,

    Tamara

  • san luis obispo or ojai

  • I think San diego, La joya and San francisco are the best places to live in CA. Good luck!

  • um here in califorina alot of moutains and snow moutains
  • How long does it take to drive from kentucky to Indianna and from kentucky to illnois?|179787

So your starting point is Harlan, KY. But you want to go where? Indianapolis is in the center of the state.
The Kentucky/Indiana border is over 200 miles.
The Indiana/Illinois border is well over 300 miles.

Here_s a map you can use. Simply plug in your starting and ending points.

  • it depends how far into kentucky, illinois, and indiana but it can be a matter of hours minutes ...mapquest it
  • What is the best way to fly from Lucca, Italy to Philadelphia PA?|106742

I will arrive in Rome, take a tour thru Globus and then return to Lucca, Italy for a few days. I need a suggestion for a Hotel for six people. Then I need to return to the USA to Philadelphia, PA. Do I take a train back to Rome, then fly from there?

  • That would probably work. USAir goes non-stop from Rome to Philly. I just checked a few prices and they were very reasonable - less than $250 for a few randomly selected dates. I can_t imagine that you could do much better than that.

They have a trip planner on their main page. Put in the date you want to fly. Note that most flights from Europe to the states on USAir leave late morning (and arrive mid-afternoon) - when you enter the approximate desired flight time, if you enter something besides that, you may get a _no match._

How do get sleep living in a bad neighborhood in the summer?|158589

I live in nyc in a bad section, about 20 guys hang out across the street from my building until 5 am every night, they scream, blast radio, cops laugh at me when i call. im on the 5th floor and stay awake until 5 am and sleep 2 hours then go to work.
How do you deal with this?

  • An airconditioner lets you keep the windows closed. Use earplugs and get a white noise machine

    http://www.amazon.com/Machine-Screen-Con

  • I used to live on the first floor of an apartment building down the block from a bodega where a group of guys would hang out well into the night. I found that having a fan on near my bed drowns out a lot of that noise. It_s easier to sleep through the noise from the fan than it is all the people talking and whatever.

  • I knew four college roommates who wanted to work in NYC. So they all chipped in for a big apartment in a not so good neighborhood in Brooklyn. Same situation. It seemed as if there was a party every night on the street. Yelling and screaming, cursing and fighting, and once in a while gunshots. What did they do? They brough an air conditioner and turned it on for the summer. During the winter less of a problem because the streets weren_t as crowded.

  • Have you seen those air purifiers that blow the air? We use those to sleep with. I live in a quiet suburb but we have gotten so used to the white noise it_s hard to sleep without it now. It covers all sorts of noise.....like the TV in the other room and such

  • Ear plugs.. A fan to help block out the noise..

  • Yeah like Lisa said, I_d just try to create ambience - whether with a fan or monotonous music (if other people around can_t hear it.) Other than that, I_d just move as soon as possible. It wouldn_t be fun to have neighbors like that.
  • Should I take a debit/credit card or traveler checks with me to Mardi Gras instead of cash?|162279

I really don_t want to get drunk and lose my money or anything like that. Does New Orleans accept the above forms of payment? I_d of course still bring some cash for tips.

  • Travelers checks is a great concept.. but when you get down to it.. many places wont take it. Same for many countries in south america. Your credit card/debit card will work just fine though. There might be a few places that will only take cash.. so carry a little on you.

    Have fun

  • Personally, I would take both. Anyplace that accepts cash will accept traveler_s checks, and anyplace that accepts credit cards will acept a debit card. There will probably be a few places that will only accept cash, but with a credit/debit card you won_t run out, only if you reach the limit of your bank account or credit card limit.

  • American Express Travelers Checks. If they are lost or stolen they can be replaced just keep up with the numbers on the checks so they can stop payment on them. They will issue you new ones right then and there.

Have a great Mardi Gras !

  • A lot of places don_t take travelers checks. Take your debit.

  • yes but some places you might go to like the daiquiri shop you might need cash.

  • debt card is much easier plus it_s easy to carry - flat in your pocket
  • What is the biggest party college in Los angeles?|182083

I want to know what and where the biggest party college in LA is, simple question right?

  • I think you should be more concerned about your education rather than partying.

  • UCLA is known for students to partake in overuse of adult beverages. UCSB up in Santa Barbara fer sure, is a party school.

  • not in los angeles but a short drive uc santa barbara is the biggest party school
  • Where is the best place to stay in Yosemit during January?|177697

I_m focused on location over ammenities and willing to pay $150 a night. I_m unsure if there is a cabin for rent in a great location or if you can rent camping gear for the night in a cool area in January. Also, how far is Yosemite from San Francisco in terms of driving distance? Thanks!

  • Try Yosemite Lodge, it_s right near the falls and the restaurant and cafe/bar are both nice. The hotel is a bit basic, but it_s right by the Yosemite falls. Off-season is $98-140/room/night depending on the quality of room and weekend/midweek. Poke around the site below, there are some interesting alternatives. There should be no need to stay outside the park in January and, depending where you stay, snow could be an issue if you do, I_ve had to use chains on a 4x4 to get in to Yosemite before.

When I drive there in the spring, to photograph the falls in full flood, I leave at 6:30am and get there for lunch and am back home for dinner. In the winter snow can be a real issue, as I mentioned before I_ve sometimes had to drive tens of miles on snow. You should really have 4x4 and snow chains to go there in January, sometimes they will insist that you use snow chains or don_t enter the park. Time wise, 4 to 5 hours taking it easy, unless there is snow.

  • There are some B_Bs just outside Yosemite. We have stayed at Sierra House B_B in Mariposa, CA, and it was delightful.

  • in Rvaens house

  • I think it is 5-6 hours from SF, Check the online map for a better idea. Jan is VERY cold, best place is the big lodge probably. A wonderful location, maybe could get a room for $150, Doubt campgrounds are open then. Yosimite has a web page with info.

  • You will find a wealth of info on lodgings in around Yosemite at

How are new yorkers different from californians?|171666

I_ve a couple people say that california and New york are _ polar opposites._ in what ways?

  • Well this question is pretty open, cause even Californians are complete opposites. The same holds true for New Yorkers. People from Southern CA and Northern CA are much different sorta like people in the NYC/ Long Island area are different from the Buffalo/Niagara region.

However comparing the two states as a whole there are the differences. I lived in NY for 26 years before moving to CA and the first thing I noticed is people from NY have a much better work ethic. Overall they are harder workers. I have noticed a lot of CA people have the mentallity of it can be done tomorrow.

Driving in CA has driven me crazy. People here love to drive slow in the fast lanes. I don_t know how many times I have been on the highway and had someone going slow in the passing lanes, and yet refuse to get out of the way of the people behind them. In NY you_ld get run off the road if you did that.

Eat habits in CA are much healthier than in NY. While its not a bad thing it can sometimes get annoying especially when people are trying to be _healthy_ yet are getting their Starbucks every morning. In NY it is accepted that the Chicken wings are deep fried, the pizza is cooked with a thicker crust automatically, and any weight gained in the winter can be lost in the summer.

Also the make-up of the population in CA is much different then in NY. CA has a much bigger mix of races who live mixed together. In NY the population in largely white and black and is segeregated. Hispanics and asians have a much smaller percentage in NY. If you go to many cities in NY there is the white areas and the black areas of the cities. I don_t want to sound mean, but it is true. With this being said I think and have noticed people in CA have a much better tolerance of people of different races and they interact with them more often. In fact when I lived in NY I could go a few days without seeing someone of another race, because of how separated they are.

  • Newyorkers are in East coast but Californians are in West coast. That is it! Did you forget that we are in the age of Globalization. all we are from one GOD too.

  • I am originally from the NY area but I live on the West Coast and I can tell you that New Yorkers have nothing on Southern Californians when it comes to being rude. They are terrible drivers and are very inconsiderit. I know I am gerneralizing but these are my observations having spent the last 10 years of my life living among Californians. I have found that they aren_t friendly and even though both places are considered liberal places but the californians want to impose their _california_ way of life on everybody. Sorry if I offended anybody but that is how I see it. Oh and the food on the East Coast absolutely destroy_s the food on the West Coast; who the hell puts goat cheese and terriyaki chicken on a pizza?

  • New York is a place to live and work .
people are rushing to and from work.
walking alone after sunset isnt wise.
there are museums and parks, etc but no great fun places as in Los Angeles or San Fransisco where there are tourists going to spend their vacations in fun, ie, Disney, Vence beach, Golden Gate Bridge , the pier, the crookedest street that twists like a zigzag, eyc.
the fine weather and the fun in California reflect on the people. they sing the words, smile to strangers, swing while they walk, etc.
  • How much does it cost to operate this heater?|194679

    Hi. Please help.

I use a 1200watts heater for 16hours per day. On average, how much($) would you be charged for this per month (in your state)?

If possible, indicate the cost of 1kwh of electricity and how u derived your answer.

    Thanx in advance.

  • My answer is $57.60.

    1200 watts is 1.2 kw. 1.2 kw X 16 hrs = 19.2 kwh every day.

    19.2 kwh X 30 days in a month = 576 kwh every month

    576 kwh x 10 cents/kwh = $57.60

I know the cost of electricity here in Pennsylvania is higher than in other states, so you may have to adjust accordingly.
  • What kinds of food are there in a delicatessan in New York?|194198

A friend is going to NY for the first time (first time to the US) and wants to know in advance what she can order at a deli. She can_t speak English and so she_s hoping to remember the names of a few popular sandwiches. Also what kinds of bread are there? Bagels, baguettes, rolls? She_s terrified of being asked questions she doesn_t understand by the waitress. Any other travel advise will be helpful too.

  • Sandwiches at a deli are ordered one of two ways. Some have a board behind the counter where they will have several possibilities listed. Then just pick the number or name and say it. You may have to name the bread that you want and or the condiment.

To custom order a sandwich it is done in this order:

    Meat
    Cheese, if any
    Type of bread
    condiment
    extras

Something like salami and provolone on a hero with mustard, red pepper and a little onion.

In the ordinary corner deli they will have a dozen or so meats, half that many cheese and four or five bread options. You can see that there are easily hundreds of possibilities to customize lunch.

Then you may find an ethnic deli with their own cultural specialties, but that is another lesson

  • There are many different types of delis in NYC. The type it_s famous for is the Jewish deli. If she wants a real NY deli experience, she should go to a Jewish Deli and order Pastrami on Rye.

I recommended Katz_s delicatessen on the lower east side. Though it_s a tourist destination (due to When Harry Met Sally _I_ll have what she_s having_ scene) it_s not super touristy and the food is still excellent.
    http://www.katzdeli.com/
you can view their menu. The Pastrami on Rye is amazing. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Carnegie deli is a big tourist destination but not that great IMO. Sandwiches are ridiculously huge (meat piled 5+ inches high) and impossible to eat without removing most of the meat.

  • Your friend shouldn_t be too concerned about her English. Chances are very good that there will be someone nearby that speaks her native language.

  • Easiest thing that will apply to pretty much any bodega is to stick with a sandwich. There are bodegas that offer falafel, gyros, all kinds of foods. Some have grills and might offer things like hamburgers, but some don_t. But you_ll always be able to get some kind of sandwich, and the basic choices for bread are either a roll or a hero. A roll is smaller and will cost usually about a dollar less for the same thing. Usually you could also order it on a bagel, but some places don_t have enough of those to last all day long.

So you can order basically any kind of meat, cheese or condiment that you want. _Roast beef with swiss cheese and mustard, lettuce and onion on a roll_. _Turkey breast with cheddar and mayo, on a hero._ _Chicken cutlet with bacon, lettuce and tomato on a roll._ _Egg salad plain on a roll._ Whatever you like. Just say whatever meat and/or cheese, and whether you want a roll or hero. Most of the time if you just give them a meat choice they_ll just suggest something to go on it, so if you don_t really care or know what it is, just say _yes, that_s fine._

But your friend shouldn_t worry too much about a language barrier. NYC is home as well as a tourist destination to people from all over the world. New Yorkers, especially those in service jobs, are used to communicating with people who don_t speak English, and in almost every case won_t be offended or irritated by it. It_s pretty much a routine part of New York life.
  • How much on average is the taxi/cab charge from laguardia airport in Queens NY to say, cental park?|104018

gday ppl, im going to NY in march and i was jsut wondering how much the taxis would be, so I can decide on my hotel.. i was planning on staying at the clarion laguardia hotel..so also if anybody had anything to say about the hotel it would also be appreciated..

  • I stayed at that exact hotel this past November. You can litterally see the airport from the hotel. they have a free shuttle so no worries. It needs some TLC. they are currently doing some renovating. The rooms were ok, the beds fine, but the halls and carpet need some updating and paint.

If you have the hotel call a cab for you, $40-$50. They call the black limo taxis. But, if you get a Yellow Taxi, $25. We did both.

There is a bus station less than a block down the street.
Take the Q33 bus to the last stop on the route. It takes you to a subway station and there are various trains that leave from there. The commute depends on where you are going. The bus ride was about 20-30 min. Train was another 20-30 min.
If you going the be there a few days, buy an Unlimited Metro Card. They are either 1 day for $7 or 1 week for $24. Unlimited bus and subway rides for the life of the card. You can buy them at LaGuardia @ the Hudson Newsstand downstairs buy luggage claim.

If possible, I would stay in Manhattan just to save time on the commute. You can find some reasonable hotels. Try Skyline hotel, Days Hotel, Super 8, or Milford. These hotels are in Manhattan _ will probably be on the same level of the Clarion.

  • Not sure about that specific hotel but, Clarion hotels can vary from really nice to not so great. They are part of Choice hotels so there 100% guarantee should apply. As for the taxi, consider using the MTA subway, it is way faster and only costs $2 each way. If an entrance isn_t close enough to walk to just hop on any MTA bus, get a transfer and ride to the nearest subway station. It really is quite safe and will save you a lot of money. Good Luck!

  • O.K. Take it from a Native Newyorker, who still lives here. Public transportation is the best way to get around in NYC. There is a flat fee that is applied to every yellow cab from any area airport to the city is $45. Check the internet for youth hostels or even cheaper places to stay. They are here but you have to book early. You are going to spend very little time in your romm while you are here, so why would you want to spend an exorbitant amount of money just to sleep and showers. Good Luck and embrace tghis great city when you come.

  • The Clarion is OK, I stayed there for a few days a few years back. The problem with this location is transportation into Manhattan.

Yellow cabs (metered) normally do not service this area, with the exception of the airport. The car service companies are good and the cars (all Lincoln Town Cars) are nice, but the cost of trips into Manhattan will get pricey. My _guesstimate_ would be about $40 into Manhattan.

You could walk about three long blocks to Astoria Blvd and get the Q19 to the N and W train at Astoria Blvd and 30th St into Manhattan (total cost of $2). If you decide to stay in this Hotel, I would mass transit it into Manhattan and take a yellow cab back at night. Not that it is a bad neighborhood situation (neighborhoods are safe), but waiting for the bus at night may be lengthy. Another alternative is to take cabs to/from the Hotel to the train. My guesstimate for this trip (again non yellow cabs) is about $12,

March in NYC is not that busy. Why not try to get a Hotel in Manhattan. I met someone who stayed at the Herald Square Hotel on 31st between B_way and 5th ave. She said it was OK and the prices there are reasonable.

  • If you are visiting NYC to explore Manhattan, then the last place you want to stay is within the La Guardia airport. Stay at a Manhattan hotel. If you want something within walking distance to everything and don_t care for luxury and pampering, then maybe The Milford Plaza will do. Visit tripadvisor.com to read review about this hotel before making any decisions. You will see mix review but I think it_s ok to me.

How much money should I plan on spending for a three day weekend in Vegas?|126381

I_m going to Vegas Thursday-Sunday in late September for a friend_s 21st. I_ve been to Vegas before, but never on a trip I funded myself. The room is taken care of, but how much should I plan on for going out and food?

  • hard to answer. Depends on your taste! Set a daily limit on gambling. Some shows can be expensive, but are nice. Some eating places are lower priced, with specials. Haven_t been there for 8 years now so out of track on it.

  • Hard to say

Clubs are VERY expensive so that could set you back a couple hundred

    Charge your food and shows

    Tip for food and drinks

I would bring at least 500
  • Im moving to nyc in about three weeks and need a safe spanish neighborhood near yonkers. Where is good?|191416

I would like to be not far from the city and in a neighborhood that is relatively safe and has a large spanish speaking population. Can anyone recommend some place? Possibly with good nightlife and an age range of 20-40 mostly?

  • The only neighborhood I can think of is Kingsbridge (in the Bronx). It_s also not the safest neighborhood either though there are pockets within that are okay.

It is close to Yonkers (via the _1_ subway to Van Cortlandt Park along Broadway and the Bee Line _1_ bus to Yonkers). There is a large Latino contingency there...usually on Broadway and Kingsbridge Road. There is major shopping nearby (Target - W. 225th Street in Marble Hill)

The nearby nightlife is on Fordham Road called _X Bar_...salsa, hip-hop, reggaeton. If you can find a place near Bailey Avenue north of 238th Street. or along the reservoir on Sedgwick Avenue, you should be okay.

  • Any where in the Bronx except for the South Bronx or around the Concourse up to Fordham Rd. and around Soundview. Those are the ruffest parts of the Bronx that I know of. Everywhere else is great. I love the Bronx! Rent is wayy affordable_. Keep your eye oncraigslist.

  • If a large spanish speaking population is important to you, why not Washington Heights?
  • Wheres a good place to go in florida for spring break?|190349

Ok some of my friends and I are planning on going to florida for spring break but cant make up are mind where we will be staying. We are in high school are senior year and we just want to have some fun because its our last spring break in high school. So where_s a good place we can go to have fun meet some girls and enjoy our last high school spring break?

  • P-Cola man! I live here, take my word for it! it_s a MUST for you spring breakers! talk about ladies! Fantasy Island for a young man. You wont regret taking this advice I can bet that. Hope you come here!

  • Disney World, Orlando, Disney World, Ft. Myers, Disney World, Clearwater Springs, Disney World

  • Daytona is nice, so is Pensacola, but I prefer Daytona.

  • bro was born and raised in Florida! Check out Miami, West Palm Beach, or Orlando! Miami and West Palm have great beaches with sexy ladies all day everyday! If you go to Orlando there_s plenty of theme parks (universal studio_s, island of adventure)! I would definetly recommend the South Beach area in Miami as the best!
  • What is there to do in California that is low in price?|191019

We have a 13 year old and an 11 year old. No adult only activities please!

  • Swim in the ocean and drive to the mountains :)

  • Gas- $35

    Lunch-$20

Spending a day with your boys at a beach- PRICELESS

thats about the only thing I know of that is cheap in Cali...lol

  • Santa cruise, Yosemitii National Park (they have nice parks), or visit a lake (they have nice lakes too)

You_d have to tell me where at... California is HUGE -- nearly 900 miles.

Okay, so if you are going to Northern California... I suggest Redding... it_s in the Mountains and there a places like _SODA CREEK_ it taste like soda... and cool CAVERNS

  • Go to a beach or public pool.

  • If you are in the Los Angeles area, go see some comedy/game shows ... the tickets are free, they usually give you a small lunch/snack while watching the shows and it_s alot of fun ... tickets can be downloaded from the internet or you can get them in person in front of the Kodak Theater at the walk of stars or at the kiosk at the Universal Studios Walk shopping area (outside the park) ... it_s free and a great way to spend the day ...

Waner Brothers Studios is fairly low cost and a nice tour of the Studio. They even let you walk on the sets of some shows. (Not while filming)

  • How far is Wilmington from Newark Delaware by driving?|188928

I_m catching the train to Wilmington and was going to catch a taxi to Newark,Delaware to my hotel room. Thanks so much.

  • I would recommend just taking the train all the way down to Newark, but the trains only run there in the morning and afternoon (not during the middle of the day or later in the evening). Newark is only about 20 minutes from Wilmington on I-95, but I rarely see cabs in Wilmington, Newark, or on I-95. You might want to call a cab company ahead of time so you aren_t waiting forever.

  • It_s about 20 minutes. You can take a SEPTA train from Wilmington to Newark.
  • Can anybody share thier experience of driving route 66 with me?|165901

I drove most of 66 in 07. Route 66: EZ66 Guide for Travelers - Jerry McClanahan was my bible for the trip.

I took nearly 2 months. I needed more time. You can breeze down the road in 2-3 weeks or explore it in 2-3 months.

There is so much to see and do along the way.

I plan to finish up the Kingman to LA segment in 09.

I hope, this helps. See you on The Mother Road.

  • Sorry, but for the most part Route 66 no longer exists. It was decommissioned in 1985.

In some states, you can still see parts of it.

Suggestions for an affordable charter boat from angel island to San Francisco?|123119

We are having a birthday party on Angel island and have a picnic spot reserved until 9PM. It looks like the last ferry leaves at 4:30, so I was hoping we could hire a boat to take us home sometime around sunset and spend a little extra time on the island. There are lots of charter services, but they all appear to be package deals including food and drinks - we just want a nice one way trip home.

  • You can contact big companies even Ferries if you like to pay $5000 or you can contact small boats in Fishman_s wharf for several hundreds, but Angle island is state park, you need to get permission.

  • How long does it take a letter from Arizona to Canada?|187087

I put a letter in the mail to go to canada with two stamps and I_m in tucson.

  • Depends on where in Canada. I would guess it takes about a week.
  • How much does a car cost to travel all 50 US states?|112021

My friend and I are both from Scotland and coming to the states soon. We plan on buying a car and seeing all 50 states. Any ideas what the best type of car/model we should go for? I have no idea how much cars cost over there. We have between $8000 and $12000, is this enough?

  • About $100,000 probably. It would have to be one hell of a car to drive to Hawaii.

You can_t drive to Hawaii as it is a group of island in the middle of the Pacific and it is probably not feasible to drive to Alaska as you have to drive a great distance through Canada and you would need a separate visa for Canada. Most people do not attempt the lower 48 and Alaska in the same trip. They usually do one or the other as the Alaska Highway to get to Alaska is quite trying in itself.

You can probably find a car in that range to drive the lower 48 states. Keep in mind that it will take you many months to drive to all 48 lower states with all the expense to go along with it (gas, tolls, food, hotels or campgrounds) and these expenses will probably equal those expense again (another $5,000 to $10,000 or even more depending on where you stay at night).

  • It_s enough for a car yes and a good car but i would suggest finding someone who knows a lot about cars not just someone trying to sell you one better yet think about renting a car...i have no idea if that_s more expensive but look into it that way you don_t have to bring a car back with you, just look into all the possibilities and there is always public transport lol yea i can_t imagine dragging around suitcases on a bus but maybe a coach that takes a people round a couple states.
    Good Luck. x

What is the weather like in Las Vegas in March? What is the best way to book a trip to Vegas?|137593

What are the best deals in Vegas - hotels, shows, tours, and buffet. Want to come their end of March for my birthday, don_t gamble just want enjoy the sites and food. Need advice!

  • We enjoy going towards the end of March. If you go too early you hit NASCAR and it gets pricey. The weather is mild normally in the 60_s low 70_s. It gets cool at night so bring a jacket. If you haven_t gone to Vegas before I_d suggest going through a Travel Agent, they can give you some great ideas. Have Fun!

  • Realllllllly COLD at night. Bring a COAT, not a jacket. Book online, search for deals, then book a room and as time approaches check again to see if the price has dropped, cancel your reserv. and rebook. That is how I do it, and save 100_s of dollars.
  • What is the best tour to take to the grand canyon?|108758

We are going to Las Vegas in April and planning on doing a bus tour to the grand canyon. Can anyone reccomend a good company to go with. I have found a few on the net, but I would prefer an honest answer from someone who has actually been on one.

    Any help is appriciated.

    Thanks,

  • We did a helicopter tour, which included a Canyon landing, and it was amazing. I highly recommend that, because it takes up much less of your day and provides some amazing views of the scenery. It was only about $100 more per person than the bus trip as well.

  • I can not, unfortunatly answer your question directly.

However, I would strongly suggest that when you do get there, take the donkey trip down the _Bright Angel Trail_ from the South Rim.

I walked the trail (30 years ago) as a young man, and if I had my life to do over again, I would ensure that was one of the things that I would repeat, for sure

I am jealous. Enjoy yourself, it is a wonder of the world, no doubt

  • There are two Indian tribes that have access to the bottom of the canyon via auto. One was the Navajo, the other was the one we took. They ran parallel to each other along the way. I viewed the Navajo and it was definitely more interesting than the one we were on. I believe the its www.navajonation.com

  • This tour is very popular if you want to do everything same day. Longer tours are also available.

    http://www.gotobus.com/cs/c779/grandcany

  • I wouldn_t recommend the grand canyon. We were very disappointed in the tour. You can upgrade for a fee for the underground tour. It was very lame!

  • Pretty much you can go to a tour with a group of people. But a trolley or a bus would be good.

  • The best tour is to rent a car and go on your own that way you can spend as much time as you want at each area look over.

  • yOu can take an old train ride from Williams Arizona to the Grand Canyon. It_s wonderful It_s a tour.

  • i think that you should take an air plane good recomend isnt it
  • What to expect when driving from Chicago to LA in January?|106668

I_ll be driving from Chicago to LA in January and I plan to take the southern route so I don_t have to go through the mountains during snow season. I_ll be driving through St. Louis, Oklahoma City, and from there, through the top of TX and middle of AZ and NM.

Any tips for navigating through the snow? I_m an LA native so I_ve never have experienced snow let alone driving in it. Thank you.

  • If you can afford it put some snow or all season tires on the car. When going through an area with snow or it_s cold enough to have black ice, slow the heck down! Keep plenty of distance between you and the other cars, theirs a lot of idiots out there. Have a cell phone with you, emergencies do sometimes happen. Put some Heet in the gas tank, it_s fuel antifreeze, keeps your fuel lines from freezing up.

I once knew a young lady named Kitty, many years ago.

  • You have a couple of misconceptions about the difference between the two routes
With the exception of the downhill trip thru Echo Canyon _I-80 W to I-15 S- the northern route is not mountainous
Neither the northern route -1-80W to I-15 S nor the Southern route I-55S to I-44 W to I-40 are going to be snow free until you get down onto the desert
On 55, 44, 40 that happens 40 miles west of Flagstaff
On 80 ,15 that happens as you get south of St George UT
The one huge advantage that the 55, 40, 40 route has is that it passes thru a lot more cities and towns
I-80W from Grand Island NE to SLC is one long lonely empty stretch of road at any time of year But in winter it_s emptiness can make it dangerous
Leave this Q open for a day or so and I_ll add some needed details
    __
    Update
    Tues :P.M.
    Driving in snow
The key to driving in snow is that you drive gently and pragmatically
    You brake gently
    You accelerate gently
    You turn gently
Sudden large movements will get you into all sorts of trouble.
You also set up your next move early
    Case in point
You_re driving on a snowy interstate and you see that you have an exit coming up in 2 miles
Gently move over to your exit lane
At a 1/4 of a mile or so out lift off of your gas pedal to scrub off some speed
Gently brake on the straight to get down to 15 mph and then do your exit
Braking at high speed in the middle of a snowy exit has been known to have some real negative consequences .
If you_re driving at night under heavy snow conditions ,turning off your headlights But leaving your running lights on will significantly increase your ability to see where you_re going.
The reason that that trick works is that with your headlights on the snow reflects the light right back into your face and you can basically see nothing But glare .
When you turn your lights off the light magnification property of snow will illuminate the road enough to see quite a distance down the road.
However snow is not your biggest problem driving in and surviving very cold weather is .
Leave this Q open and I_ll tell you how to deal with that issue

  • Well my advice to you would be to get snow chains so as to be prepared. Make sure you don_t drive too close to anyone, as you will find out; there are real idiots on the roads. Drive at a safe speed and rest when you need to. Hope you have a safe and pleasant trip. OMG, last but not least be sure you have your cell phone and charger with you in case of an emergency.

  • snow = buy tires chains

    dont hit animals

you might see a kkk meeting if youre in the south (texas and around there) in the night

    try not to hit people
ull see lots of trees and rocks and some desert
and expect a little rain with heat
    im doubting the snow

  • A nightmare.

Are there any good stripper exercise classes in Houston?|170232

A friend and I think it would be fun to take a stripper class, but they are nearly $400 here in Houston (You have to buy them in packages). Does anyone know of a place or a person that offers affordable lessons. We want to let our inner sexy divas out!

  • Try these, God you people get uptight when someone mentions the word stripper--you do realize you do live in Houston dont you?

  • Don_t know about your area but if you have cable on demand they have it on there as erotic dancing :)

  • Sheila Kelly_s S Factor

  • Well there is Treasures, Memories, Hottyz....uhh nevermind. You were asking about stripper exercise classes, not where strippers exercise. Sorry.

  • here_s a better idea why don_t you go for a respectable profession where people will like you for who you are instead of what you look like? you want to make something of yourself by being a stripper? that road only leads to misery and despair.
  • How would I get from 2nd Market street to the new jersey state aquarium?|170901

I used the Septa website to figure out how to go to the new jersey state aquarium and it said that I have to get down at 2nd Market and walk 12 minutes. But google maps said I can drive 8 mins from 2nd Market but walk over 5 hours! Please let me know how to get there!

  • You_re literally only across the river from there at 2nd and Market. I don_t think that the ferry is running, but that_s an option. There are NJ Transit buses that head over the bridge and the PATCO high speed line also crosses the Ben Franklin Bridge. A walk to there from 2nd and Market will NOT take 5 hours...maybe one at most.

  • Try taking the Patco trains which run from Philly to the Jersey suburbs. You may have to walk a few blocks to catch Patco in Philly...I think there is a station near 8th and Market, and then you may have to walk a little bit from the Patco station in Camden to get to the aquarium. Good luck.
