What are some great vacation spots in the United States?|142448

My husband and I like to go somewhere new every year. Where are some of your favorite places to vacation in the US?

  • New Orleans is tops for food and jazz, although the city can be pretty empty at times. I have great memories of Arnaud_s, Antoine_s, Commodore_s Palace, Brennan_s, K-Paul_s Louisiana Kitchen, and Cafe du Monde Take a New Orleans tour, and be certain to visit during Mardi Gras if you love human spectacles (the major hotels set up bleachers; inquire ahead of time for ticket availability). I wouldn_t go if I didn_t plan to spend money on fine dining personally.

I enjoyed a river tour down to the Chalmette Battlefield. Others have told me that Alligator Annie_s Swamp _ Marsh Tour, although Annie has passed on, is well worth the time, but I_ve never done it.

Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Grand Canyon (allow time for Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona_s Red Rock Country) are all places that I wouldn_t want to miss in a lifetime. Allow sufficient time to soak up the beauty of these places, especially Yosemite and Yellowstone. Colorado Springs with Pike_s Peak and the Garden of the Gods is beautiful, but I would want to visit the famed national parks first.

New York City_s museums are top notch, Broadway is Broadway, but my favorite place is the Empire State Building at night, but especially on a clear night. For some reason, the lines are much shorter nearer to closing. Tours of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty shouldn_t be missed. Personally, I would want to check out the Intrepid.

Washington, D.C. offers a tremendous plate of opportunities. There are so many attractions that some sites, such as the National Cathedral, nearby Williamsburg and Mount Vernon, are missed by most visitors.

If you like history, I wouldn_t want to miss a tour of Gettysburg and Antietam (I personally prefer Antietam). It could be combined with a visit to Baltimore (National Aquarium), Washington, or both.

Dayton, Ohio, is the mecca of aviation history. The U.S. Air Force Museum is the world_s best military air museum and takes a day to tour, at a minimum. You can walk through many presidential airplanes. The federal government has preserved many of the Wright Brothers_ sites, including the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, where the first airplane was developed and flown (the Wrights only flew a powered glider at Kitty Hawk). The first real airplane isn_t at the Smithsonian but at Dayton_s Carillon Park, an enjoyable historical park, and you can get within five feet of it.

Dayton, once one of the wealthiest cities in the U.S. as a center of the aircraft, automobile and cash register (NCR) industries, among others, has a very good art museum.

You could combine a trip to Dayton with a visit to Cincinnati, Columbus, or even the Wilds, a gigantic wildlife preserve. Or, you could head about three hours north to Cedar Point, the roller coaster capital of the world, and the Lake Erie islands.

Another of my favorite places is the Signature Lounge atop the John Hancock Center in Chicago, a city which would merit a 2-3 days stay at a minimum in the summer.

Of course, everybody loves San Francisco. Many friends, however, number Alaska among their favorite destinations.

If you go to Orlando, head east for the Kennedy Space Center and the nearby coastline parks. I loved the pier at Cocoa Beach at night, much more enjoyable for some reason than the piers in southern California.

BOL for a number of great vacations in coming years!

  • Yellowstone is very cool if you want to see nature stuff you cannot see elsewhere. There are geysers and bears and moose and wolves...Most of the park is inside a giant volcano, after all.

We love Hilton Head island. Much of it is gated communities so it makes a big difference where you stay there. From there you can Savannah Ga.

Kiawa Island is a beach/condo kind of place that is close to Charleston. Charleston has some cool stuff to see. We did the carriage tour there. We toured an aircraft carrier, and saw a plantation, and Fort Sumter....

    Disney World is always good.

Boston is very cool if you are at all curios about the early history of our country. Check out sites on the Freedom Trail. It is a red line of paint and brick that leads you to many of the historic sites including the Old North Church(one if by land, two if by sea) and the USS Constitution.

  • I love northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Lake Michigan has the best beaches and a Beautiful shoreline. In the Upper Peninsula there are over 300 waterfalls. Porcupine Mountain also known as Lake of the clouds is AWESOME!!! Pictured rocks national lake shore is Beautiful I love going to Mackinaw Island and Mackinaw city ..Lake Michigan has the best sunsets

  • Myrtle Beach, SC
    Branson, MO
    Nashville, TN
    Tampa, FL
    Orlando, FL (MY PICK!!)

  • tampa or Miami for sure
  • How many hours is it from Burbank to Artesia by car?|143889

How many hours is it from Burbank to Artesia by car? I need to know because I might be traveling there in January and I_m from Canada. Please answer!

  • It all depends on the day (and time of day). The distance is only about 30 miles if you take the 5 freeway (around 45 km?- sorry I don_t know the exact distance in kilometers). If you are traveling there on a weekday afternoon or even on a Saturday, I would allow at least 1 hour, maybe even 1 hr. 20 min. because the 5 fwy. is usually packed, especially going through downtown Los Angeles.
Otherwise, I don_t think it should take more than 45 minutes.

Another option would be to take the 134 East to the 210 East to 605 South to 91 East. This route is at least 10 miles longer, but you do avoid going through downtown Los Angeles.

    Good luck!

  • Totally depends on traffic. Everything in LA depends on traffic. Just DON_T drive from 7-9 am and 3-7 pm on the freeways. Avoid it at all costs: you will be stuck in the most annoying parking lot ever!
  • What to expect in New York during August?|143115

I am planning my very first trip to NY next month (August) and I see the websites that say NY is very humid/hot in the summer. Is is just this way for the NY natives?

Also, I can tell that in NY walking around is typical...do ladies wear sandals and/or sneakers or is it common to see chicks in heels?

Please help a tx girl out!

  • theres a lot to do in aug. lots of street fairs outdoor shopping, south street seaport, it is very humid and hot in aug. most girls where dressy shorts with a casual top and dressy flats, or sneakers, not many women in heels during the day....at night yea

  • August is really hot and humid, it_s unbearable even to natives like us. There is really no way to get used to it. People were everything, I wouldn_t recommend sandals or high heel if you_re walking all day.

  • yes. Everyone here has a iphone or blackberry

Depending what neighborhood you are planning to go, like lower Manhattan is full of rich people and west side of Manhattan as well.

  • Nobody cares what you wear in New York.
  • How Much Would It Cost To Drive From Boston To Martinsville, VA?|118954

I need to get to Martinsville to pick up some art i left with my grandmother and then bring it back. I want to know how much it would cost in gas/expenses and how much i should pay someone to do it.

  • AAA has a nice fuel calculator that you can put in what vehicle you_re driving and will estimate fuel costs. Motels should run anywhere from 50 to 100 a night
