How do I dress for a 56F to 31F Chicago weather?|138851

I have lived in California most of my life and I_ll be going to Chicago.

  • ok I live in Phoenix, AZ and frequently travel to Chicago b/c my bf_s family lives there (about 30 mins east of Chicago)

    jeans are a given.

sweatshirts, long-sleeved layering shirts (these work good for if you get hot-I did a few times during the day and we were there in November), a heavy winter jacket (and a light windbreaker for the warmer days), gloves, scarf, hat.

for night-I wore flannel pajamas and slipper socks.

bring along winter boots (for snow) just in case. I brought those along with my good tennis shoes and winter dress boots.

the cold isn_t so bad-it_s the WIND combined with the cold-lol. I could not believe how windy it was!! the cold I could actually handle pretty well and i_m used to temps being 95-110!!

just make sure to have the gloves, hat, scarf and jacket and you should be fine. I_d go w/out the long underwear-they are uncomfortable and you_ll probably get too hot and itchy.

    have fun on your trip!!!

  • A sweatshirt (or a sweater) and a fleece. If it is going to be windy a sweatshirt (or sweater), a winter coat, and a hat. Bring with gloves just in case.

I_d suggest taking the layers off when if you are going to be inside for a while (10 minutes or longer). This means jacket and sweater/ sweatshirt off. You won_t over heat inside and you_ll be warmer when you go outside.

I know what I am talking about. I have lived most of my live in Chicago and a few years in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which makes Chicago seem warm during the winter, where I would go on hikes for hours when there were double digit below zero wind chills.

  • Dress likes its going to be 15F. The windchill can take the actual temp down a few degrees. Winter Jacket with lining, hat, gloves,
    gor-tex boots. Smart Wool socks.

If you are going to be outside for awhile bring your long underware as well.

Hope you have fun up here!

  • Layers. You can always peel off or add too as temperature and wind changes.
  • Is it easy to hire a car in Southern California?|161383

I am going to California in May with my boyfriend from the UK.

We are hoping just to hire a car for a couple of days or if its successful we could do it maybe more than once.

Has anyone hired one before and was it OK? What do you need to take with you? Any info would be great.

Can you recommend any company to go with?

  • avis as its the closest to the airport and quicker to come out

  • All you need to rent (hire) a car is a credit card, a current, valid driver license, and be at least 23 years old (some prefer 25 years old). If you are younger you will be charged an underage surcharge. Your U.K. driver license will be honored for the length of your visit, or for a maximum of 90 days. Please note that the (so called) International Driver License is specifically prohibited from use, by law, in California..

Most American rental cars, except the tiniest cracker box model, comes with automatic transmission (gearbox), air conditioning, premium stereo, and unlimited mileage.

The two companies that tend to be the least expensive are Enterprise, and Alamo, and the two companies that tend to be the most expensive are Hertz, and Avis. Enjoy your stay in the U.S.

  • You can book your car hire in California when you are there or pre-book in advance.

A trustworthy, reliable and competitive service we use is

Just tried a random 3 day search in from Los Angeles Airport at it is coming up with prices reduced from 70.05 to 64.10
    Hope that helps

  • Hi Florence,

Peedlepup gave a most excellent answer. I would like to concur with his choices of Enterprise and Alamo. My personal favorite is Alamo. Please give him _Best Answer_.
  • How much money should I take to New York?|149449

Well im 12 and im going with my friend also 12 and her mom. I lov to buy purses and clothes and stuff. I also need money for food too. How much money should i take to New York?

  • I_m assuming you mean the city. If you are staying just for one day: 50.00 for food. Depending on what stores you shop in, I would guesstimate about 100.00 - 300.00 for shopping.

  • I would agree with Rob R , 400 quid should do it and then you_ll get around $780?
You can check what you_ll get for your pound at www.xe.com

Have fun New York is a great place for shopping, do NOT loose your friends mon though..lol

  • depending if you have to pay your room and whether or not your friends mom will pay for somw of your stuff also. i would say about 400$ is you are going for a week

  • Depending on your stay, at least a couple of hundred dollars.

  • At minimum 200

  • Go site seeing first. If you go shopping in NY you want be able to stop shopping.

  • Check out the exchange rates first it all depends on what country you are in ask some one to give you a hand.

  • just as much money as you want!!! as long you try and not spend it stupidly!! Even though you might not think that!!

  • At least $500 that should be enough

  • 400 pounds.

  • 35 cents

  • A lot!

  • a bunch, just grab a sackful
  • Is it better to purchase your Hawaii inter island flights ahead of time or when you are on your trip?|162052

Looking to find out if we can just kind of play it by ear and by flights between the islands or purchase them ahead of time?

  • Hello,

I recommend purchasing your inter-island flights ahead of time. I also recommend going with one of the smaller, local air carriers (see links below). Last time I was in Hawaii it cost me only $39 for an inter-island flight - way cheaper than on Hawaiian Airlines.

With the smaller carriers, just purchase a ticket for the last flight of the day. If you want to leave sooner, just show up at the airport and they can usually get you on an earlier flight. It_s like a bus pass! Usually there isn_t a fee, but be sure and check with the carrier.

    Have a great trip!

P.S. You should try scuba diving while you_re in Hawaii. It_s amazing.

  • You can usually get away with playing it by ear, though the best fares and the most convenient flights tend to disappear about a week before departure. Transportation to the smaller islands--Molokai or Lanai-- is severely limited, and a high school sports tournament, for example, could keep you from buying tickets at the last minute.

If you like to take photographs from moving planes, you might consider a smaller airline that flies a 9-seat propeller plane. Those often have bigger windows that are less scratched up, and they fly closer to things you want to photograph, like cities and mountains. Because it is a more visceral flying experience, you will probably want to wait until after you land to eat.

  • My suggestion is to buy them ahead of time. There are three airlines that do interisland flights:

    www.hawaiianairlines.com
    www.mokulele.com
    www.iflygo.com

These airlines all have low fares for certain flights...sometimes as low as $39 pp one way. Those flights fill up quickly and then you are stuck with the higher-priced fares. I have seen interisland fares for as much as $129 pp each way! If you know when you are going to travel, buy ahead of time to save money. These tickets aren_t open-ended and you will have to pay the difference if they have to rebook you on another flight at another time.

  • When I did that in 2007, I booked all of the flights in advance on Hawaiian Airlines. The advantage is that you can book the whole itinerary as a multi-destination trip (just click on the check box on the home page). That_s usually a better price than you can get on separate flights. Better still, you might be able to fly from one island to another then home from the second island without flying back to the first one. That saves both time and money.
  • How do i get to San Fransisco from Solana beach station?|172564

I_m trying to get up to San Fransisco somehow, weather it be by bus or by train. Trouble is I_m looking on the Amtrak website and i don_t see a direct rail there. Can someone help me out, by directing me to the easiest way up?

  • the easiest way sounds complicated on paper but if you take amtrak you would leave from solana beach and take it to LA. From there you have a choiceyou can either A) take the Coast Starlight up to Oakland and then hop on an Amtrak bus into SF or you can B) take an Amtrak bus from LA to Bakersfield then take another train from Bakersfield to Oakland then a bus into SF.
The Coast Starlight is the simpler route and it is a very nice ride since it goes up the coast, bit it takes a very long time to get there, if you go through Bakersfield it seems more complicated but it is really easy and it will save you hours off your trip.

  • There_s no Amtrak to SF. Amtrak goes to Emeryville, and then there is a shuttle to SF.
