Now taking suggestions for a great vacation destination within the US?|100617

It_s been a long time since my last REAL vacation, and my husband is soon returning from Afghanistan, and I_m thinking about surprising him with a vacation (we haven_t had much of a honeymoon). We_re not beach people; we like beautiful scenery; we enjoy music history; we_re adventurous and active people who like amusements and other thrill-seeking activities. All suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

  • To combine thrill seeking _ great scenery consider renting a All Terrain Vehicle) four wheeler) A side by side ATV like the Yamaha Rhino would be a blast. There are many of these rental outlets all across the west. Depending on what kind of scenic areas you enjoy _ season you are visiting would help you to decide where to go. One suggestion is:
South-Central Utah_s 275-mile long Paiute ATV Trail is a loop trail with no beginning and no end! It passes through several towns and has side trails leading to others. Dirt Wheels magazine rated the Paiute ATV Trail as one of the best 15 trails in the country. It has been rated as one of the top 5 trails in the country by ATV Illustrated magazine. Many riders consider the Paiute Trial to be the top US trail. This is a good ride in the early spring or fall.

  • For music history, the first thing that comes to mind is Nashville, TN, as well as Elvis_ home Graceland, also in Tn

  • I would go to Mackinaw Island, MI. If it were my choice. They have a website, I am not sure what it is but just put Mackinaw Island, MI in your search engine. There are no cars allowed on the island so it is nice island you can just walk around at your own pace. Hope this helps.

  • My favorite has always been Mesa Verde, Colorado. It_s a national park. Stay in the Far View Lodge. The lodge is on top of the mountain at 8000 feet and at night you can see for 200 miles in every direction.

If you get tired of dead indians in the park, Arches monument and Zion canyon are close by, as is four corners.

  • Maybe Seattle? It_s beautiful over there with greenery all over. Also, the city center is really nice, lots of stuff to do, shop, visit museums, sightsee. I think there is a Music Experience museum over there.

You could also go snowboarding if you plan to go during snow season. Mt. Rainier is pretty close to there so I_m sure there are a lot of activities, such as hiking or mountain biking.

It_s also only a three-hour drive to Vancouver, so you could pop on over there for a day or two to see the city.

  • If you like the outdoors, Cooperstown New York. It_s a small _baseball_ town, but you truly get an _outdoorsy_ feeling.

  • San fransisco thru the Redwoods to Astoria Oregon, finish with Portland Oregon.

  • NOrth Shore of Minnesota - quite the _artsy_ community in Grand Marais and you could swing over to Hibbing to soak in some Bob Dylan.

  • Eureka Springs, Arkansas sounds exactly like what you want.

  • niagra falls may be touristy, but if you haven_t been there, it really is amazing and awe-inspiring. i highly recommend visiting. also, national parks like those in california and washington are beautiful. hike up the waterfall mt. vernal in california_s yosemite.
  • Is it too early to find good deals for Vegas for October?|132138

Just searched and nothing under 600 today yesterday it was like 500??

  • I just checked out the Bellagio Hotel (spectacular place). They are currently running an on-line special. I checked out October 8 and 9 and they have a room available for $179.00. They also are running some Air/Accommodation packages, but I didn_t look at them.

    www.bellagio.com

  • I just bought tickets to Vegas for October yesterday. The day before yesterday I looked and the tickets were $10 cheaper. I looked today and they were $10 more.
I don_t know where you live but I always fly Allegiant Air because they have direct (and cheap) flights (and packages) to Vegas and if you live in the US more than likely they fly out of a city near you.

  • It_s not too early. The earlier you start the better. To find cheap flight to Vegas, do a search on Kayak engine. It will check all the major travel websites and airlines and return all fare from your city to Las Vegas showing you the lowest prices. All with one click of the mouse.

For hotels, the trick is to book directly from the hotels using their discount promo codes. Here are some codes for hotels on the strip.

Remember room prices skyrocket is there is a major convention in town. Always check the convention calendar first.

  • How long would I survive in the desert in Arizona and Nevada with no water but got water from cactuses?|199551

If I know a little about desert survival, how long will I make it just wlaking, how long until I_m dead meat?

  • There is much more to survival in the desert than water. But IF you knew what youre doing you can make a solar still and get fresh water from damp sand. A human can live a few days without water. But prolonged exposure to the sun can take you out much faster than that.

    Here is a link on outdoor survival skills;

I would advise against trying to live off of cactus water, there are vast areas of desert with zero cactus.

  • not long if get bit by a rattle snake.
  • What roads are closed in Oregon and California?|151821

Because of wildfires. We are going to the coast and we need a website showing all the roads closed in Oregon and California.

  • If you_re coming to California from the north east, stay there, all roads are closed for you. don_t come. Bye
  • Is the King Of Prussia mall worth a three hour drive?|100512

I am planning on taking a trip to the King Of Prussia from CT is it worth the drive? About 3 hours and $35 in gas.

  • It all depends on why you would do it. It is the second largest mall in the US. It has some great stores, restaurants and it is conveniently located near major highways. If you live in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, and are looking for a day of shopping, it is probably worth an hour drive.

But, I am sure that between CT and PA you will pass the exits where there are at least ten malls with the same stores, the same chain restaurants that are conveniently accessible to the interstate.

If you want to tell people you have been to the 2nd biggest mall in the US (bragging rights?) I guess its worth the trip. Does it have anything there that you can_t find in half the distance? No, It is not like the Mall of America with amusement rides inside or anything that dramatic.

Don_t get me wrong, I really like the the Court and Plaza (the fancy names for the K of P mall). But if I were you, i would wait till I had some other reason to stay down here for a few days before I went to see it.

  • Don_t listen to those KoP haters! Sure, it has the usual (Old Navy, Modells, Penneys) but it also has the unusual - high end designer shops of all kinds, and seven different department storers. If you are a dedicated shopper, you might kick yourself for not going - in terms of actual retail space, it is bigger even than the legendary Mall of America, it just didn_t bother with such things as roller coasters. So just for the sheer spectacle, you should take a look, just so later on, you can say _Yeah, I went there. It was no big deal_ while secretly remembering what a good time you had.

Bring comfortable shoes, of course, and note that in Pennsylvania, there is no sales tax on clothes, so if you buy enough, you would offset the cost of gas and tolls.

While you are down this way, you might also consider a drive into the city - lots to do in Philly.

  • No! Please don_t get fooled. It_s just not worth it, plus the traffic in that area is just brutal. One wrong turn and you will be on the turnpike heading west. You will really get aggravated. Plan something else, go see a movie. Good Luck!

  • It_s an overpriced version of stores that are in every other mall. It_s about 20 min from my house and I_ve only gone once in the last few years and that was only to go to the IMAX movie theatre.

  • No mall is worth driving 3 hours. They all have the same stores and the same stuff.

  • hell no
  • What are zip codes for the west side of palmdale?|177898

I_m looking at moving there but want to be closer to the freeway and the best elementary school and hospital.

  • This link will take you to greatschools.net to compare Palmdale elementary schools. The rating scale is 1-10, 10 being the best. There are two with a rating of 6, located in zip codes 93551 and 93552. You can probably expand your search out, to possibly find schools nearby with higher ratings, but thought you would like to start here.
