Is Chigago to be considred a beach holiday?|145721

We are planning a trip to Chigago in August and want to know how if teh itenerary should include a few days on the beach. If so, which are the best beaches?

  • Oak Street Beach and North Avenue Beach are the best. The northside beaches - loyola park - are nice but the neighborhoods can be a little rough, though much improved from only a few years ago.

I would consider Chicago a great place to go to museums and shopping, dining and clubbing, but I would have to admit we are not the _beach_ destination compared to many other places in the world.

  • A few DAYS on the beach? Not sure if you mean that you plan on pitching a tent and building a bonfire, but if that_s what you mean, forget it. You can VISIT the beaches each day, and some of them are pretty nice. Not the French Riveria, but not bad,. Try Oak Street beach, North Avenue beach, Montrose Beach.

  • If you have a dog, you can take it to the Foster Avenue beach and let it run loose. I_ve done that.
Otherwise, if you want beaches, come on around the lake to Michigan.

  • come over to michigan we have great beaches lake michigan has a beautiful shore line and best beaches. we will welcome you over here in Michigan

  • You would be better off going on a boat ride, seeing the city_s skyline, than hanging out at the beach.
  • Why do some Philadelphia crosswalks have little men painted in them?|169777

I was recently in Philadelphia and noticed that some of the crosswalks had what appeared to be little men painted on them. What do these signify?

  • East coast city drivers in general do not have the same kind respect for crosswalks that they have on the west coast or even in the mid-west. Those little people painted there respresent pedestrians who have been run over and smushed because they made the mistake of expecting cars to stop when they set out to cross the street. They serve as a reminder to other unwary walkers to act like Jack - that is, be nimble and be quick!

Actually, they are really just an indication that you are supposed to cross in the cross walk. There have been a lot of pedestrians killed trying to jay walk across the Roosevelt Boulevard so the city is trying to raise awareness of pedestrian safety.

I looked for the cite but after a couple of seconds of searching (after which I got bored), I could not find the USAToday article about it, but every year, two Roosevelt Boulevard intersections (Grant Avenue and Red Lion Road) are identified there as being among the top ten most dangerous intersections in the country.

  • I aim to please!

    Signed, the City Guy!

  • Is this the little man you are talking about? I saw this symbol in several different colors around town. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jackodog/2405074838/

  • oh my gosh! I was wondering the same thing when I saw those too! I was wondering if they represented places where people had been hurt from an accident, but that didn_t seem to a be a very good reason for them to be there. So I_m not really sure. I guess it_s just telling you that this is where you are supposed to walk, even though there are already the lines painted on the street for that.

  • the little man walking is the international visual picture of pedestrian crosswalk

  • I think to give you the hint to: walk here.....

  • Its probably some sort of logic symbol which is supposed to communicate to people that this is where they should cross the street.

I_m wondering if the painting represents the person before or after the hit and run.
  • I live in Alabama. How much money would it take and what is the cheapest way to get there?|154317

    I don_t want to drive. That_s a long way.
I have a cousin that will let me stay with her til I get a job and a place.

  • Where, precisely?

I bet you voted Republican, didn_t you?

  • To where are you wanting to move?

  • Get where? sorry don_t understand

  • Bus, then train, then Airline for most US destinations.

  • um... may I ask where?

  • If you already live in Alabama why do you want to know how much it costs to get there? And it should be close, if you are already there!

  • it won_t cost you anything as you already live there LOL

  • ummm get to where???

  • When will then be now?

    Soon.

  • Aren_t you already there?

  • Get to where? Love to help you but your question makes no sense.

  • Opps you forgot to mention what state your currentaly in so we could calulate from state your at to Alabama

  • Nothing, you_re already there??????

  • Since I do not know where you are going, I have difficulty estimating how much it could cost to get there.

  • I don_t think you can get there from where you are.

  • Sweet question, it makes no sense.

  • You could hitch hike if you knew where it was you were going

  • Although I don_t know where you_re traveling FROM, if you_re in the US, the cheapest would be by bus, but I wouldn_t recommend that mode of travel to my worst enemy. Amtrak is great! I am an over the road truck driver, and I can tell you when I go on vacation, I love to ride the train! It_s rather inexpensive, there is a dining car and club car, and you_ll get there much quicker.
