How long after Christmas does Disney World keep their decorations up?|134091

I am going to Florida to visit my grandparents on Jan 1st and we_re hoping to spend a day or two at Disney World. I_ve always dreamed of seeing Disney decorated for Christmas so I was if anyone knew when they started to take thier decorations down. Is there a chance I could still see them if I went as soon as I got to Florida? Thanks!

  • The lights at Hollywood Studios are scheduled to be up until January 4. So I would guess that would be standard among the four Disney parks.
  • Can a military person travel abroad for vacation on his leave?|146693

My friend is in the military and wants to travel abroad after he finish tech school. Is that possible even if his still not a US citizen?

  • yes but you have to let youre command know

  • Is he a U.S. legal permanent resident/ If so, he will need to carry his green card and a passport from his home country when he travels internationally.

  • Yes.
  • What are some social norms I should be aware of when traveling to Alabama?|144603

I am going on a service trip to Montgomery and we want to make sure we are respectful to the culture (we are from far north). My friend from the south says to make sure we say sir and maam (almost nonexistent in the north). Any other tips?

  • Well I_m from Troy, AL just 30 mins south of Montgomery. Alabama is pretty much the same as every other state, the only difference people go out their way to talk to you. Don_t worry about it. Just be yourself and everything will be all good.

  • Yes, minding your manners is a biggie. People here are laid back and willing to help.

  • My friends tell me that attending church is part of _normal_ behavoir in AL, even if you are not sure what you believe. In rural parts of central AL, I experienced reverse racism. I (white) was refused service at a restaurant (everyone else was black) It may be a rare thing, but it happened to me. Thanks for serving!
  • Whats the best route to take on a roadtrip from LA to Seattle?|118714

Two of my friends and I are planning a roadtrip for next summer and we have a little over a week to go from LA to Seattle and back. We are planning on sleeping in motels along the way, since my friends are not the camping type.

  • I_d say up the coast, that way you can enjoy the scenery. The last time I drove from the Seattle area down to L.A. we took I-5 and the majority of the trip was pretty boring. The main highlight from that trip might_ve been the Lake Shasta area. I love the Oregon coast, it has a lot to do and see. If you drive East after that towards Astoria and take the bridge across to WA it gets prettier and there_s more to see on I-5.

  • I agree with take the Pacific Coast Highway, but take it all the way and come back of Interstate 5. About three days going up, two days in Seattle, and two days back. It_s a wonderful trip. I took that trip several years ago.

  • Up the coast has my vote, too. Take PCH (1) through Big Sur, all the way north of Willits, if you want. The only drawback is that it_s slow going; you can cut over to the 101 any time, and that_s beautiful, too. Take the 101 as far north as you want (you can stay on it until just south of Seattle, even). To speed things up, just hop over to the 5 (it goes from Mexico to Canada).

Good luck...it_s a terrific drive, though; the Redwoods are amazing. If you cut over from the 1 to the 101 around Arcata, watch for zombies around the Hoopa area...I think it_s a breeding ground...

    Whee!
  • Where can a fourteen year old living in Los Angeles get a summer job?|130835

I am fourteen years old looking for a summer job, but by this summer I_ll be fifteen. I need to raise money to pay for this trip to Alaska. I_m mainly looking for summer jobs where I can work with kids at camps and maybe teach them soccer. However, most camps only offers positions to volunteers. It would also be really helpful if the camp had a website. I live in Los Angeles by the way, so nothing too far, maybe thirty or forty miles max.

  • You need to be 15 in order to get a work permit. Since you are underage, you will have to try the usual: Babysitting, yard work, and dog walking. You will have to ask around local small businesses to see if they will hire you and pay you under the table. Don_t bother with the big companies, their policies prohibit hiring you.

As for camps, they won_t hire 14 or 15 YO. Insurance requires them to hire 18YO. Under 18, you_ll be a volunteer Jr. Counselor or Counselor-In-Training.

    Good luck!

  • Mow lawns, clean houses or maybe a box boy at a super market.. some private schools have summer programs for their students (pre school ~ 2nd grade. you can always apply for a counselor. My cousin did that when she was about 15 or 16... It didn_t pay well though.

  • I don_t know of any camp that hires 14 yr olds as counselors. Usually you have to be at least 16 years old (some require you to be a college student), before that you can be a junior counselor but you don_t get paid. Some camps will only hire junior counselors who have attended their camp in the past. I know teens who coach, but none get paid, they do it as an internship or community service for their college resumes, so it might be tough to find a paying job, but look!

Are you a really great swimmer, good enough to pass lifeguard testing? If so, you might look into Gerrish Swim _ Tennis Club, 2713 New York Dr, Pasadena, CA 91107 (626) 798-9909 They have hired younger teens (14 _ 15) in the past, usually from the local private schools. It_s a pretty cushy job but the teens complain all the time anyway.

Unfortunately, there aren_t nearly as many summer jobs for teens as there were a few years ago, due to the economy and adults needing to take those jobs. I know because I have a 14 yr old who will be working this summer, and I_ve kept my eyes open the last few years for ideas. If any of your friends work, apply where they work. Look in the local mall and shopping areas to see where kids your age are working. It_s much harder to get a job before you_re 16, because there are stricter rules the employer has to follow. Here is info on work permits, you_ll need one, even though it_s during the summer. If you keep the same job when school starts up again, you have to get a new work permit.

    Good luck!

Edit, something I forgot to include:
Here_s info on the hours you are allowed to work depending on your age. During the summer, at 14 _ 15 years old, you can work 8 hours per day, 40 hours a week maximum, between the hours of 7am and 9pm. Important to know because many employers don_t know off-hand.

  • Princess ...

For a VERY _ Romantic _ thing ...Take the Elevator to the Top of the _ Paris _ and watch the Light show across the street at the Beligio

Also a Great thing to do with Children .....

Camp at the KOA located at the Circus circus ....

DON_T Miss the _ Fremont _ experience ..Take a good camcorder and digital to capture the sights and sounds

Go for a ride on The _ Stratosphere _

Check out the Pirate show ..

    Go for a Carriage/Bike ride ...

  • Horseback riding at Mount Charleston, it_s cooler there!

Go to Lake Mead and rent a boat or jetski or just ride the paddlewheeler for lunch or dinner with the kids.

Tour the Boulder Dam if you need to get out of the heat,
they are said to be opening up the tour again, and the dam has the largest AC untis in the world, it_s 50 degrees down there, wonderful!

I suggest for a dinner you eat at Mon Ami Gabi_s at the Paris, and sit on the patio- they are rigth across from the Bellagio and you can watch the Dancing Waters over everyone_s heads.

If your kids were older I_d recommend Circus Circus,
for its midway games and shows, still might be a fun place for them if Dad can win them some toys!

  • way too hot to go horseback riding. Stay where there is a nice pool. Try Mirage. The entire pool is only about 3 feet deep and the kids will love it. Go shopping at Caesars Forum shops, eat at Paris buffet and Aladdin buffet. Go see Mystere and O.

  • Things to remember:
1.Drinks are free when youre gambling. Sitting at a bar and playing a few dollars in a poker machine will get you a free drink. Sitting at a machine in the casino will get you the same. Tipping the waitress or bartender a dollar or two will keep her coming back. If you walk up to the bar and order drinks, youre going to pay lots more, even for soda or bottled water.
2.Players Cards: Before you begin gambling, get a players card. Most places offer sign up deals (a coffee cup, a free meal, assorted coupons). If you get a card where youre staying and you use it while youre gambling, you can save the points and use then toward your room when you check out. Some casinos will combine accounts for married couples, some dont. I always get a card in my name and ask for a second card. I play with one and my husband plays with the other. That way all the points are going to one card, and accumulate faster.
3.Beware of time-share people! As you walk through the hotels and along the strip, youll be approached by people who want to give you free show tickets, free tours, free meals, etc. These are time-share sales people. They promise freebies in exchange for an hour of your time. I warn everyone about this but some people just dont listen. A friend of mine decided an hour of her time was worth giving up in exchange for a show. So her and her husband accepted, were put on a bus and taken to a presentation and werent bought back for SIX hours. Their only escape would have been to take a cab back to the strip but that would have been expensive and they wouldnt have gotten their free show tickets. The best way to get these people to lose interest in you and move on to the next person is to say, Thanks, but were leaving tonight.
4.Free Pulls: Some of the casinos offer free pulls on a special slot machine as you walk in the door. There are usually no strings attached, you pull the lever and win something. Usually its a key ring or a hat; sometimes its a free buffet. Sometimes its a coupon for a fun book (a book of coupons for that casino). To get the fun book, you can be sure youre going to have to walk to a far, far corner in the casino. They want to get you WAY inside.
5.$40 for $20: Some casinos offer $40 in slot play for $20. What they dont tell you is that its on a bank of special machines, and you cant cash out for cash. Instead, you play the $40 and then choose a prize based on the credits. So before you hand over your $20, take a look at the prizes being offered. If theres something in there thats worth paying $20 for C have fun. If not, keep walking.
6.Valet: If youre going to be renting a car while youre there, valet parking is the way to go. For a $2 tip, you can park at a hotel or casino and visit the nearby hotels and casinos.
7.Bus: If you use the busses that run up and down the strip, put your wallet in your front pocket. Vegas is the favorite vacation spot for pick-pocketers, too.
8.Cabs: Cabs are more expensive than a bus, but faster and less waiting. Almost all hotels have a cab line outside one of their doors, a line of cabs waiting for the next fare. A hotel employee will whistle for the next cab in line when you ask for a cab.

Things to see (and most are FREE!):
1.The Freemont Street Experience: Every night there is a light and music show that stretches for blocks. Its an amazing thing to see and its FREE. Freemont Street is in downtown Vegas, youll need to take a cab if you dont have a car. The street is blocked off from traffic and you can stand in the street and look up and watch the show. (Another place to keep a close check on your wallet.) Theres a different show every 30 minutes, beginning at 8:00 or 8:30 PM. Show times and pictures can be seen at:
    http://www.vegasexperience.com/
Be sure to check out the video! Freemont Street also has performers and kiosks all along it. Lots to see and worth a trip. Downtown used to be nasty and scary, but theyve cleaned it up and its clean and safe now. Just dont wander too far off Freemont on any of the side streets. You probably wouldnt want o anyway, most of the action is right on Freemont.
2.The Fountains at Bellagio: Dont miss this! Its a 900-foot long row of fountains that dance to music. The songs change, and its awesome to see. More info at:
    http://www.vegas.com/attractions/on_the_
While youre there, go inside and check out the conservatory. Very impressive!
3.Caesars Forum Shops: If you feel like strolling through Rome, check out the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. This is also where the talking statues live. More info on the shops and a link to info on the talking statues at:
    http://www.vegas.com/shopping/forumshops

4.The Canal at the Venetian: This is pretty amazing and a MUST see. You feel like youre in Italy as you stroll along the canal and visit the shops. You can even take a gondola ride. Check out the Canal Shoppes at:
    http://www.venetian.com/shoppe/index.cfm
and get information on the gondolas at:
    http://www.vegas.com/attractions/on_the_

5.The Volcano, The Tigers and The Aquarium at The Mirage: If you go up the moving walkway and through the front door at the Mirage, youll see the white tiger. Pretty cool to see. Head through the foliage to the front lobby and check out the wall behind the check-in desk. Its a HUGE salt-water aquarium. In front of the hotel there is a huge waterfall that turns into an erupting volcano (loud, bright, and hot!) at night. A trip to Vegas without seeing the volcano erupt just wouldnt be a trip to Vegas.
    http://www.themirage.com/

6.The Wildlife Habitat at The Flamingo: An outdoor habitat located within the Flamingo. You can watch the penguins play and see the live flamingos (still havent figured out how to kidnap one) plus lots of other birds, fish, and turtles.
    http://www.vegas.com/attractions/on_the_

7.Masquerade Village at The Rio: Masquerade Village is inside the casino at the Mirage. There is a parade in the sky with music and dancing and lights thats pretty cool to see. This is located off the strip, too far to walk, but there is a free shuttle that goes from Harrahs to Rio and back. More info and a video at:
    http://www.harrahs.com/our_casinos/rlv/e

8.The Eiffel Tower at Paris: You can take a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

  • What kind of highway is the I-29 between Fargo and Kansas City?|167615

Particularly between Fargo and Omaha. I am thinking of travelling it tomorrow. Is it a good twinned highway that is taken care of? I am heading to Florida (in Minot now) but don_t want to go via Minneapolis because the weather is not great. Can anyone tell me about that highway?

  • Its wonderful, one of the best of the interstates, very little traffic and flat driving
