Is it worth driving for three days across the country to visit the east coast for a few days?|180983

We are thinking of a road trip to D.C. It_s 30 hours from here (Colorado) and we will be able to stay there for 4 nights once we get there. Is this doable and worthwhile? How long can we drive in a day? We are thinking 700 miles.

  • How many will be in your party? That will determine how far you could go in a day. In theory, if you could average 70 miles per hour for 24 hours, you could cover nearly 1700 miles. But flying may well be cheaper. Go to Southwest Airlines_ website and see what they want for tickets from Denver to Baltimore (the closest they get to DC).

  • fly its cheaper for three days, round trip $189 right now
  • Where to go for amazing outdoor adventures in/around Illinois?|154696

I love the outdoors, especially wildlife and amazing natural scenery. Illinois seems incredibly dry of interesting outdoor attractions. Are there places I seem to just not be able to find? How about in the surrounding area? Are there any great canyons, mountains, areas rich with interesting wildlife? Great for photography? Please let me know so I can go there.

  • There are tons of wonderful places in IL! You are not going to find any mountains but, you will find beautiful hills, forest and more!

Why have you not driven the river road? It goes from the top of the state to the bottom. Hugging the beautiful cliffs of the Mississippi River. Nature is all over; during the winter you can go up north and see the Bald Eagles. They come down for the winter and nurse their young. You can see them feeding on the ice, if there is any in the river. They have stations set up in most of the small towns that let you view them for free. The conservation department is usually there giving lectures and things like that. Up in Grafton they have the Dragon that was painted by the Native Americans. It is on the side of a cliff facing the river. WONDERFUL!! They have a huge cave next to it that makes for some great shots. There are also tons of ferries in this area, pretty cool to see and ride on. I live in MO and drive both sides of the River Road at different times of the year. During fall you can see the leaves changing, golden fields, pumpkin patches and more. Of course do not be surprised if you see fox, deer, turkey, eagles and more! There are tons of state parks, and wildlife preserves up and down the road. Little towns with small museums about the river and wildlife, there is always a festival of some sort on the river road. There are tons of great picture opps here! You will also find old steamboats which are beautiful on the river! Of course you can cross into MO and go see Hannibal where Mark Twain lived. There is a great cave up there and tons of other things to do. Mark Twain Lake is also very beautiful! Here are some sites to help:

Apple River Canyon is also a very beautiful place. There are tons of limestone cliffs and gorges cut through the earth. Large forest line the area. They have some wonderful hiking trails!

Beall Woods State Park is just another Jewel of IL. WOW, wonderful wildlife, beautiful hikes who could ask for more! They have camping and fishing too. You also get to hike to the river which is just awesome!

Silver Springs is the place for both winter and summer. They have a ton of trails and the spring is amazing! Winter sports are huge here so is the wildlife!

Cahokia Mounds. GO HERE!!!!!! The mounds are just awesome! There is nothing else like this in the Midwest. They have a wonderful museum that is FREE, the mounds are also FREE!!! They do not have a lot of trails but, the mounds are just breathtaking! The largest gives you the best views of STL and the surrounding area. People come from all over to see the mounds; I cannot explain the beauty of them you really just need to go see them!

Trail of Tears Forest. The Trail of Tears is just amazing and they have several wonderful parks along it. This park in IL is wonderful! They have well maintained trails which highlight the forest and let you see nature up close and personal! There are tons of hills and valleys here and the views are just beautiful!

Rock Cut State Park is just HUGE!!! They have trails that go on for 20 miles. There is a beautiful lake here and the hiking cannot be beat! They also have camping. This place is wonderful and I highly recommend it!!! There are tons of flowers and animals here. This is one of the most beautiful parks IL has to offer!!! They also have tons of winter programs here and the park is open for some great winter picture opps!

Castle Rock is also another beautiful park. We used to go there a lot when I was a kid. The best time to go here is in the fall! The leaves are just gorgeous and wow they have some great views of the river! There are tons of places to take pictures and they always have some type of wildlife program. The winter time here is also very pretty. The way the snow covered trees hang above the river are just amazing! They have a few miles of trails but, the whole place is well worth your time!

Go to IL Caverns!!!! The caves are amazing!!! If you love the outdoors you will really love it here. My dad and I used to go every year. I am sure you can get some great pictures here. They also have programs that help you learn how to explore the caves. You have to get certified for certain areas. This place is just way cool!

There are so many other wonderful places to go, you just have to do a little leg work to find them!!! This website is wonderful:

    http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/par

It lists all the state parks for IL and gives pictures and descriptions. It also has the different amenities that the parks offer. You can also email them with any questions you might have and there is a list of all the events that take place in the parks. I think you really will be surprised at what IL has to offer! Also if you want a side trip try going to TN, AR or MO they all have tons of wildlife, great parks and wonderful cities and towns!!! I hope this helps!

  • What time of the year do the cherry blossoms fall off?|139236

I know they bloom in DC around April, and there is the festival, but when do they fall off? Thanks!

  • Probably May to June.

  • Japan gave 3,020 cherry blossom trees as a gift to the United States in 1912 to celebrate the nations_ then-growing friendship. These trees were planted in Sakura Park in Manhattan and famously line the shore of the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. (see West Potomac Park), and the gift was renewed with another 3,800 trees in 1965. The cherry blossom trees continue to be a popular tourist attraction (and the subject of the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival) when they reach full bloom in early spring. Also, Balboa Park of Los Angeles has 2,000 cherry blossom trees that blossom in mid to late March. The trees are located on Balboa Boulevard in Van Nuys. Philadelphia is also home to over 2000 flowering Japanese cherry trees, half of which were a gift from the Japanese government in 1926 in honor of the 150th anniversary of American independence, with the other half planted by the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia between 1998 and 2007. Philadelphia_s cherry blossoms are located within Fairmount Park, and the annual Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia celebrates the blooming trees. The University of Washington in Seattle also has cherry blossoms in its Quad.

Cherry blossom in Newark, New JerseyOther US cities have an annual Cherry Blossom Festival (or Sakura Matsuri), including the International Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon, Georgia, which features over 300,000 cherry trees. Belleville, Bloomfield, and Newark, New Jersey celebrate the annual Branch Brook Park Cherry Blossom Festival in April, which attracts thousands of visitors from the local area, Japan, and India. As of April 2009, Branch Brook Park has a cherry tree collection with over 4,000 cherry blossoms in more than fourteen different varieties. Branch Brook Park will soon have more flowering cherry trees than Washington, D.C., thanks to an ongoing replanting program. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York City also has a large, well-attended festival. But mainly, people say they fall around April. When they blossom, its the most beautiful thing in the world kinda feels like you are in heaven. Hope this helped! PS thanks wikipedia for the info!!

The cherry blossom is a major tourist attraction in Germany_s Altes Land orchard region.

    Great Britain
Batsford Arboretum holds the national collection of Japanese village cherries, sato-sakura group.

    South Korea
Cherry blossoms are also indigenous to South Korea. Watching of cherry blossom was introduced to Korea during Japanese Occupation since Japanese watched cherry blossoms in Korea in an attempt to create an atmosphere of Japan. The festivals continued even after the Japanese surrendered in WWII because botanists were able to trace the origin of the cherry blossom to the natural flora of Halla mountain in Korea, but not to any natural flora in Japan. _In 1933, the Japanese botanist Koizumi Genichi reported that the Japanese Sakura(Somei Yoshino) is of Jeju-do islandorigin. In 1992, Takaki Kiyoko, another botanist specializing in sakura, also claimed that the Yoshino sakura hails from Jeju Island. According to Invest Korea journal, more evidence supporting this claim is that while this species of cherry tree is indigenous to Korea and can be found as part of the natural flora of Mount Halla, it cannot be found anywhere in Japan_.However, this claim did not become the mainstream of botanists. In 1916, Ernest Henry Wilson insisted on _Japanese Sakura(Somei Yoshino)_ was a crossbreed of the wild species of Japanese Sakura (_Edo higan_ and _Oshima sakura_).In 1991, Professor of Tsukuba University Iwasaki Fumio reported that _Japanese Sakura(Somei Yoshino) were born in around 1720-1735 by the artificial crossing in Edo(Tokyo)._Recent studies conducted on the comparison of Korean and Japanese cherry blossoms by botanist concluded that the two trees can be categorized as distinct species when analyzed by inter-simple sequence repeat and chloroplast DNA in 2007.Further studies are ongoing. This lead Japan to develop many theories on how and where the cultivated hybrids came to be but its origin is still obscure.Scientia Horiculturae volume 114 states cherry blossoms _that grows under natural environments in Jeju, Korea and of Yoshino cherry hybrids that grows only in cultivated conditions in Japan_. Koreans decided to continue the festivals with Koreas natural flora of Cherry blossoms and have been watching cherry blossoms bloom during various festival throughout South Korea, with the Korean weather agency announcing a forecast every year.

Certain trees at Seoul_s Gyeongbok Palace were cut down to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Japanese surrender in WWII.Although Cherry blossoms are already indigenous to Korea, Japan had planted these tree on sacred and offensive locations in the Palace. Once the offensive trees were cut down the festival continued with the indigenous trees. The cherry blossom festival at Gyeongbok Palace is one of

  • Anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks starting in as early as late February through the end of April. The peak for the blossoms is around the last week in March where I live in WA State. The temperature determines when the blossoms appear. It takes about 2 weeks of mild, temperate warmer weather with NO frost for the trees to start blooming. What gets me is the blossoms all appear well before the actual leaves, though there are leaf buds ready and waiting when the blossoms appear.

  • The cherry blossoms only last for a few weeks so they are long gone.

However, DC is currently coming into crape myrtle season which I think is at least as pretty as the cherry blossoms.

  • They_ll generally last about a month from the time they bloom, but the weather can cause them to drop faster.

  • They bloom for about 3 - 4 weeks and then they fall off.

  • I think they might have fallen off about a month ago..
or at least they have where I live..in WI

  • How to drive from Tucson to Washington in the Winter?|164434

Hi, my gf and i are trying to drive from tucson arizona to vancouver washington and are planning on leaving the day after christmas. we heard that the I-5, which every site tells us to take, closes in the winter due to snow so we obviously need an alternate route. any help?

  • the only place I 5 can close is in the mountains between oregon and cali . just plane to drive that part around ten in the morning and read the electric road signs on the way. They up date every 20 minutes
If its a bad winter the roads in Nevada will be worse.

  • I_m from Tacoma, WA. We get very little snow in December. You shouldn_t have any problem if you stick to I-5. If there happens to be any snow, you_ll hit it about mid-Oregon, and I-5 being the major route that it is, there will be deicer trucks all over the place. Don_t worry. You_ll make it just fine.

  • I5 is probably your best bet since it is a major interstate. You may run into some delays, but you will be able to get threw ok. Like others have said, if you go down threw NV, you might run into some problems since they are not major roads and some may be closed.
  • Which airport should I travel to if I want to go to the State University of New York at Canton?|141233

As I need to travel from Korea to New York and I do not know which airport should I travel to as it is an international flight!

  • If you are allowed to enter Canada, take a flight to Ottawa, Ontario. Ottawa is only an hour away by car from Canton. JFK is more than eight hours away by car. You should be able to take a bus from the airport to downtown Ottawa and from there you_ll need to work it out how to get to Canton.

There is only one airport in Ottawa. I don_t know anything about leaving to get there, only about what airport is closest. Also look into Toronto and then transferring by plane to Ottawa. Or look at flying into Montreal, taking a train to Cornwall, Ontario, and then a bus to Canton, NY.
