What is the best cross-country moving service?|197372

Looking for a moving company for a small apartment from West Coast to East Coast (3000 miles). Looking for quality -- safe handling of antiques and artwork, etc. Thanks for any suggestions and personal experiences!

  • This depends on the city you_re moving from and to. You want to check for an agent that has affiliates in both the origin and destination. I will also recommend checking to see if this agent has it_s own haulers (those that actually drive your household goods across country). Use only reputable companies and please do not let anyone try to talk you into having your estimate done by item. The best way to get a long distance (or even local) move quote is to have someone come to your home and do a visual survey of all you are moving. For long distance moves, the estimate and the final cost should be done by the weight of the shipment and not by the inventory list (the surveyor gets his box count wrong by 1 box and your move price can jump exponentially if done by the inventory/item).

A great place to check out the reputations of a moving company is movingscam.com. I would say the BBB however few people actually file greivances with them so a bad company can have lots of complaints to them but only a handful, if any, to the BBB.

Moving these days with gas where it is will be an expensive proposition so be prepared...it will cost you almost as much to move yourself in a UHaul or other self move service once you figure in gas, lodging, food, etc.

If you want quality, find 5 (I recommend more than 3) qualified companies, get binding or guaranteed not to exceed estimates and then compare services offered...not everyone offers the same services and their prices will reflect this.

Once you find a company that you like, choose at least 2 backup companies and then from that list decide which one offers you the best quality based on your budget.

Many times, the major vanlines are not the best choice...they are only as good as their origin agent, hauler and destination agent...you_re essentially dealing with sometimes as many as 3 different franchises of the same vanline and their quality on one end may not be nearly as good as the quality of the origin agent that you chose to do business with. If going with a major vanline...ask what agent will be hauling and what agent will be delivering and then check out those agents as well as the origin agent.
  • What is the best beach in Massachusetts?|171773

I live in Boston and want to go to a beach this Labor Day weekend, but not sure where to go. Any recommendations?
...I_m thinking of going to Crane Beach in Ipswich or Provincetown? Which one is better?

  • crane for sure
  • How long does it usually take for postal mail to arrive from New Jersey to Illinois?|160794

I have sent the mail on Friday of last week, and i was wondering how long would it take until it ends up in Chicago, IL?

  • 3-5 working on average

    www.usps.com

  • Usually around three days.

  • I would say it depends on what is being sent.
A subcribed weekly newspaper from NW WI can take 1-3 weeks to get to Colorado Springs. CO. It can also take a week to go just 50 miles.

  • 3-5 days unless you mailed a check, then who know_s when it_ll get there!

  • A lot depends on the size of the city it is mailed from or to. Your letter will go to the local processing center. Generally the mail will go on a flight that night to the processing center that handles the mail for the town it is going to. The processing center will then send it to the local community.

If the processing center in NJ is small and doesn_t get much mail for IL it won_t send a tray directly to the town. It may send it to the district. For example.. let_s say you are mailing to the 612 zip code. This is the Quad City area of IL and is processed by Des Moines or Cedar Rapids or the Quad City plant.

So the processing center may not get very much mail for that area so they may consolidate the mail and your mail could go to any of the above locations. If it comes to Des Moines (where I work) we send it to the Quad Cities plant the night that we receive it. And then the Quad Cities will process the mail the next day and it will generally be delivered the following day.

Lots of variables, but keep in mind that the mail moves 24/7, so that 2 or 3 days is calendar days not weekdays. This is true at all of the above plants, so when your mail will move all weekend long. Since your mail is going to Chicago, the mail should have flown straight into Chicago and could be delivered on Monday.

Of course if the address is hard to read it can take longer because most mail -- including hand-written addresses -- are processed entirely by machine.
Sorry if this is waaaay too much information.
  • How long should this take to arrive if shipped from Kentucky to Louisiana?|160397

By Priority mail and regular mail if the guy shipped it this past saturday? He was supposed to have shipped it Priority but think i should have already gotten it so i think he shipped it regular.

  • How big a package are you talking about here? Maybe Priority Mail wasn_t an option. Give it a week.
  • Where is good, affordable place to stay in Boston near where the Big Apple Circus is being held?|163178

We_re going to see the Big Apple Circus in Boston, I think it_s near Faneuil Hall and want to stay somewhere nearby, as we_re going to Salem, MA the next day, and we_d like not to spend an arm and a leg on a room for one night. Any suggestions?

  • You_re joking, right? There are no decent cheap hotels anywhere near central Boston! Of course, when you say _near_, what does that mean? walking distance? or merely somewhere between Boston and Salem? Assuming you are driving, look at motels north of Boston (toward Salem) on Route 1. You can probably find a decent one for $75-100. In the city, under $200 is pretty tough. I_m not kidding! From a suburban motel, you could even park the car at the Wonderland T stop (subway), and take the train in from there, as parking in Boston is also very expensive. Good luck!

  • How much does it cost for taxi for 4 people from Fort Lauderdale Airport to Miami?|151245

I need to go from Fort Lauderdale Airport to Miami Seaport. What would be an economic way to travel? Taxi or shuttles? And how much? Thanks.

  • According to TaxiFarefinder, it says it_s about $100 after tip. The metered rate is about $84. I selected, _Downtown_ as From, and _Fort Lauderdale, FL_ as To.

I assume it_d be cheaper on a shuttle, but at least this site will allow you to gauge as comparison points.

  • This question previously answered. Search the answers.
You may want to look into taking Tri-Rial and then Metro-Rial into Miami.
Shared ride vans cost 50 to 80 per head, depending where you are going. With 4 people a taxi may be your best bet, around 80 to 120 depending on destination.

  • If you can get a cab to take 4 people + baggage it will be a better deal at about $80 or so including tip. There_s a shared ride shuttle that may be a few $$ less but you have wait for them to fill up _ drop off. [Note all the cabs are asking for rate rises for fuel so rates are in flux]
