What were the donations toward Chicago after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871?|102659

What cities of the United States had donated money and/or supplies to Chicago after the fire of 1871?

  • _The Chicago fire relief effort challenges those who contend that private charity is insufficient to cope with disasters and that strong government action is necessary. Even before the fire was fully extinguished, the citizens of Cincinnati held a rally that raised $160,000 for fire victims. Citizens in dozens of other cities around the country did likewise. In New York City, wagons went through the streets to collect clothing. Money raised for the relief effort totaled $4.8 million, including nearly $1 million from 29 foreign countries. Much more was donated in goods such as clothing and food. This pattern of generosity has been typical of all major disasters in U.S. history._

    Another donation from Cinncinnati:

The Chicago Tribune building was totally destroyed. The editor for the Cincinnati Commercial, unprompted, sent the Tribune everything it would need to begin publishing the newspaper again.

  • Queen Victoria donated books to replace the library. Only thing, our boom town had neglected to establish a library in the first place.

  • How easy is it to become a street vendor in hawaii?|177355

I would like to sell fruit on the beach in hawaii and would like to get an idea of the process in getting street vendor permit for this Business.

  • It isn_t easy at all, and pretty much cannot be done. It_s not like many cities, you can_t get a permit for that sort of thing, especially on public property. All the concession licenses are given out for multi-year leases.

  • I don_t think it is a good idea. The lifeguards will probably chase you off the beach. If you get a permit, the lifeguards are not going to like you. Selling fruit on the beach (Waikiki), nah no go.

Maybe on the street and in the malls along Waikiki, but there are already a bunch of people selling something. To rent your space . . . expensive.

  • don_t try, you_ll fail miserably... sorry....

  • How long would shipping take from Illinois to California?|140487

I orders a package from Illinois, and i_m wondering how long it would take before it arrives at my house.

  • It all depends on how the package was shipped such as
Fedex or UPS Ground - 4 to 6 days
Fedex Express Saver or UPS Orange _ 3 days
Fedex 2 day or UPS Blue _ 2 day
Fedex Priority or UPS Red _ Next day usually by 10:30
Or Fedex First Overnight or UPS EAM (Early AM) _ Next morning usually by 8:30
Also have to consider on what item that you actually had ordered because the shipper may had used a different service or carrier that was listed.

  • If it_s going ground, usually about 4 working days. See if you can get a tracking number from the shipper and then you can find out exactly.
