What is a good cmpsite to got to that is about 3 hours from new york city? Preferrably with cabins?|131550

I want to go around the end of july. I have a small child so I don_t want to drive for too long. I would also prefer to rent a cabin but tenting it is OK too. What are some beautiful sites with amenities, and areas of interest (ammusement, sites, museums, restaurants etc.) scenery is the most important

  • lewiston pa. off of 78 beautifull country and cabins
  • Where is the best place in Alaska to vacation?|130483

I would like to know where might be a good place to stay for about a week, and why it would be nice. What there is do do.

  • Any place is great! Bring a camera and journal and make wonderful memories. Go to the Visitor_s Center and get booklets of places where you are not going. That way you can at least read about them. Welcome to Alaska!

  • Having lived in Alaska myself for about 7 years, the only place I can recomend personally is my favorite place to visit, Homer, AK.

It doesn_t get nearly as cold being in the southern part of the state, though a light to medium jacket is a good idea if you go beach combing ....

My husband and I stayed in a neat little place (don_t remember the name!) ... it was a winery/cabin rental place. They had really cute little themed cabins, a hot tub, and wine tasting (if you are of age of course ... I was still breastfeeding my oldest so I missed out!) ...

You can go out on what is called the _Homer Spit_ and go beach combing for different types of driftwood and some little clam shells and stuff ... plus there are some neat little gift shops and restaraunts out there ...

In town there is a restaraunt (forgive me but I forgot the name of this too!) that makes these gigantic pizzas ... and lots of other nifty foods ... I think it was like a mixed ethnic type thing ... you know, italian, greek, american, etc.

I Love Homer Alaska! I wouldn_t want to live there, it is rather expensive (being small) but it is my favorite place to visit in the summer during _Tourist Season_.

  • I would suggest taking the 7 day cruise. This way you can see all of the ports/cities for the price of one. Most cruises will stop in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Sitka. If you want just on city it depends on what. Juneau (state capital) and Anchorage are the most popular. The others are smaller with a strong Russian theme/culture. I would research them all to see what you would like the most.

  • How can I use The Law of Attractions successfully?|183397

I have watched the movie several times and I am a believer. My question is how can I use it correctly to receive whatever it is that I really want?

  • The Law of Attraction refers to the idea that what you focus on you attract. For example, if you focus on getting a new job, picture it, believe it in your mind 100%, you will draw a new job to you. The idea is you attract what you focus on, good or bad. So stay focused on what you want instead of what you don_t want. I have personally experienced the law of attraction working time and time again. Give it a try...you won_t be sorry. Hope that helps!

  • I found helpful information from Bob Doyle_s website,
    http://www.wealthbeyondreason.com/?a_aid

He_s in the movie _The Secret_ and breaks down the information in a real practical way.
You can also check out a Google group,
    http://www.changeagent101.com
that may help you learn to use the LOA principles successfully.

  • It_s simple. You only have to get it right. Remember, it works all the time and it_s working in everyone_s life.

    1. Know what you want. Make sure it_s something you really want.
    2. Ask.
    3. Visualize you are having it.
    4. Believe it_s already yours.
    5. Detach from the outcome. Make sure nothing blocking you from getting it.

You can learn more about the Secret Law of Attraction at source link below.

  • Just keep believing...just keep believing... just keep believing... NOT!

Stop believing pseudoscientific BS, and stop believing that movies are real.

Oh, gotta go check out my Nostradamus predictions for tomorrow!

Just out of curiosity, what does this have to do with LA travel? The spirituality forum might give you a better audience.

  • Ask for what you want. Be specific.
Know that you_re going to receive it.
    Receive it.

    It_s really just that simple.

    NOTES:

    There_s no belief required.

  • you have to believe on it.and then you have to work on it. then you will get it.

  • so this guy walks into a bar with a suitcase then proceeds to open it up and places a little midget on the barstool... have you heard this one or should i continue?

What are some liberal cities outside of the Northeast and the West Coast?|183478

I am talking about cities like: Lawrence, Kansas; Austin, Texas; and Boulder, Colorado. Do you know of any other cities that have a population that is interested in green technology, tolerant of diversity, accepting of the non-religious, etc?

  • Milwaukee, WI
    Asheville, NC

  • Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Raleigh Durham area is pretty liberal due to the college students and technology jobs. Ashville, Cleveland, Northern Virginia as well.

  • ...wow, after reading that question, I_m going out and burn a pile of truck tires and throw a bunch of grocery store plastic bags out in the wind to blow around... I think I_ll do it in the Name of Jesus !

  • Minneapolis is very liberal.

  • Well, I_m going to guess Chicago since The Obama_s are from there and he_s Liberal.

  • How much International Reply Coupons do i need in a letter that i am sending to the USA from Australia?|118069

I_m gonna send a C4 sized letter to the USA and i live in Australia. I bought a few IRCs but i dont know how many to put in the letter. In order for them to respnd in the USA to Australia in a C4 sized envelope. How many IRCs do they need. Do IRCs exchange differently in different countries? How many do i need to send one to the UK?

I_m an amateur when it comes to the postal service.

  • it looks like you only need one according the USPS website
    which I copied here

    International Reply Coupons

International reply coupons (IRCs) provide foreign addressees with a prepaid means of responding to inquiries, solicitations, or other types of communications that are initiated by U.S. senders. IRCs are exchangeable for postage stamps by postal administrations in member countries of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). Each IRC is equivalent in value to the destination countrys minimum postage price for an unregistered airmail letter. The purchase price is $2.10 per coupon.

As of October 11, 2007, only international reply coupons printed by the Universal Postal Union can be redeemed at U.S. Post Offices. The valid version of the international reply coupons printed by the Universal Postal Union is approximately 3.75 inches by 6 inches, has a barcode on the back, and has an expiration date of December 31, 2009. This policy is for international reply coupons issued by the United States as well as for those issued by foreign postal administrations.

  • Most Americans don_t know what an International Reply Coupon is. Would it be something like the amount of postage?

You may get better answers by asking this question in the _AUSTRALIA_ section, or by calling your local post office and asking for the rates for international mail.
  • What hotels can i have like 10 girls and 1 adult?|117002

It has to be a hotel in Los Angeles. Its for my 13th birthday party. Im inviting about 9 girls plus me and my mom, it would be great if my mom could have a room that is connected but there is a wall seperating the two rooms. I would like it to be a nice but not crazy expensive hotel. Thanks so much!

  • For 10 people you are going to need more than 2 rooms. No way around it. And it_s going to be expensive no matter what...

  • Well there is an online website that offer this services here it is http://www.disholidays.com/hotels/los-angeles-hotels.html
Well here you can find your hotel rooms in your budget as it also offer discount.

  • You can book your hotels as here http://www.hotelsdiscountdeals.com/los-angeles-hotels.html
as it offering hotels rooms at discount rates.

  • Order a hotel on some website buy google.com if you have a computer.
  • What parts of the US attracts the least overseas tourists?|198376

If a couple from Europe wanted to visit and go to a part where there would be no other tourists, where should they go? Mississippi perhaps, or Alabama?

  • Try South Dakota.

  • Mississippi or Alabama? You are reallyl aiming for the asshole of the country. I_m from the US and wouldn_t want to visit either of those states.

You could also try Kentucky or West Virginia if you want some serious red neck hill billies to mess up your holiday.

  • Anywhere rural without attractions will have few - if any - tourists. Note that anywhere with no tourists will also have little in the way of traveler support (few hotels _ restaurants, etc.). That would be as true of rural New York state as in Mississippi.

  • Helena Montana. Heck even Americans don_t want to visit there.
  • What train do I take from Yankee Stadium to go to World Trade Center and other places of interest?|182916

I will be in New York next week . Never been before and would love to see some of the sites.
I am going to a Yankee Game. How do I get from the stadium to the World Trade Center?
What about Central Park? The Empire State Building?

  • The B, D and 4 trains run from Yankee Stadium down into Manhattan, right through the middle of it. In particular, the B or D train will stop at 86th, 79th and 72nd St right next to Central Park, and at 34th St. right next to the Empire State. You will then want to switch to the A, C, E or 1, 2, 3, or N/R trains to go down to the WTC. Here_s a great Web guide to NYC that is well written and organized and will tell you how to find out anything about NYC

    http://www.findingdulcinea.com/guides/Tr

  • My friend, from Yankee Stadium, you can take the Manhattan-bound (southbound) _B_ or _D_ trains (Orange Line) to 59th Street. Once there you can transfer to the downtown (southbound) _A_ or _C_ trains (Blue Line) to the Chambers Street-WTC.

To go to the Empire State Building from WTC site, take the uptown (northbound) _A_, _C_ or _E_ trains (Blue Line) from Chambers Street-WTC to West 4th Street. At West 4th Street, transfer downstairs to the _B_, _D_, _F_ or _V_ trains (Orange Line). Take the uptown (northbound) train from West 4th Street to 34th Street.

When you exit the subway at 34th Street, walk east 1 block from the subway station to 5th Avenue and 34th Street.

From the Empire State Building to Central Park, well are several ways to get there by subway.

Option 1: take the Queens-bound (northbound) _F_ train (Orange Line Local) from 34th Street to 57th Street. When you get there, exit the subway and walk 2 blocks north along 6th Avenue to 59th Street.

Option 2: take the Queens-bound (northbound) _N_, _R_ or _W_ trains (Yellow Line) or the 57th Street-bound (northbound) _Q_ train (Yellow Line) from 34th Street to 57th Street. When you get there, exit the subway and walk 2 blocks north along Broadway to 59th Street.

    Option 3: take the Queens-bound (northbound) _N_, _R_ or _W_ train from 34th Street to 5th Avenue.

Option 4: take the Bronx-bound (northbound) _B_ or _D_ train (Orange Line) from 34th Street to 59th Street - Columbus Circle.

    or

Option 5: take the Bronx-bound (northbound) _B_ train (Orange Line) from 34th Street to any stop on the _B_ line from 59th Street to 110th Street. The _B_ train makes local stops from 59th Street to 125th Street.

I hope this information is very helpful. If you have any questions or need travel directions while in town, just drop me a line by clicking on the avatar and e-mail icon in the profile. I_ll be glad to help.

  • What are people in Seattle looking for in a roommate?|180135

And where is the best place to look? Craigs list just sends me fake people from God knows what country. Alot of places out here seem to be co-ed and that is not what I am looking for. I am out of ideas.

  • Then go through a roommate-placing agency instead of trying to do it for free.

And delete the dupe of this question - a bit annoying you asked it twice.

  • Someone hot who they can slip it in when they_re drunk together, wake up and act like nothing happened.

  • Check the PI/Seattle Times and Seattle Weekly and The Stranger as well to find more listings. Try the online versions of those papers which usually has more updated ads.

  • Walk around the University district! Plenty of places around there have signs hanging from the building saying *roommates needed, rooms available*. Even if you aren_t a student at UW, a good amount of places will take you anyways.

Better City to visit during the summer and why?|182993

I_m planning on visiting either Boston, Washington D.C. or Los Angeles during the summer. If you could choose which city to visit and why what city would you choose within the three choices. If you can list pros and cons to visiting the cities.

  • Nice places to visit in summer (sorry, but your list is limiting you. Visit LA in spring or fall, it is way too hot in the summer.):

    1. Vancouver, BC, Canada. GREAT city. Lots of everything, and in 2010 that will include the Olympics. Mountains on one side and ocean coast on the other. A short ferry away is scenic and huge Vancouver Island. Lots of trees and incredibly pretty for a large metropolis. Best places to go: Commercial Drive, Gastown, Yaletown, Vancouver Island, lots and lots more. Just avoid the Downtown Eastside, it is where all the drugs are.
    2. Chicago, IL, USA. I love Chicago. A tad expensive, but lots of great things to do. Hundreds of concerts and stuff, theatres, and Navy Pier is amazing at night and usually has shows.
    3. I guess Boston. Or DC. Or Baltimore. Or all of them at once in a gigantic amazing New England Trip. There_s an idea.

  • Boston is nice in the summer time, in fact the rest of the year is too cold

DC is also very nice in the summer,
lots to do in both cities

    never been to LA

Since I live in the Boston Area, I would chosse DC, only because I have been to Boston so many times. But you really can_t go wrong with either

DC and Boston both have lots of museums, historical sites, shopping, restaurants, and nearby beaches.

  • Boston is the prettiest of those cities, and has more historic sights than the others.

The main attraction in Washington is its museums.

If you want a visit that focuses on a modern city rather than on museums or history, I would go to Los Angeles, which has many interesting neighborhoods, great restaurants, music and art scenes, fashion, design, and tremendous cultural diversity. But don_t go to Los Angeles for a standard tourist vacation - there are few real _sights_ and places like Hollywood and Beverly Hills are boring tourist traps.

  • I would go to DC there are so many museums to see that it could take days and they are all free
  • What is the most inexpensive place to live in the Seattle area and surrounding cities.?|113739

I will take links or email addresses. I just need to know what THE CHEAPEST place that is less than an hour away from the University of Washington is.

  • I assume you mean renting? What_s your budget? _Within an hour_ gives you a pretty big area. You could go North to Everett and get a much bigger place for a lot less than in the Seattle neighbourhoods - only about $400 for a one bedroom or studio. Or you could go South to Renton or Tukwila, or East to Issaquah. Those are all 15 mins to 30 mins out of Seattle - more during rush hour.
    http://www.rent.com
is a good place to look for units though if you_re looking for just a studio or renting a room in a house you_ll find those at
    http://www.seattletimes.com
    or
    http://www.craigslist.com

If it_s just you a good option would be to find one of those houses in Wallingford, Fremont, Ballard or Queen Anne that they_ve converted to apartments. You_d get to be really close to school plus live in a cool neighbourhood and possibly be within walking distance to a lot of things. And they_re actually quite affordable. A friend of mine had a great studio in an old house in Queen Anne and only paid $700 per month. Another had a one bedroom apartment and paid $750.

If you have some specifics about what_s most important to you I can give you some more info. I moved here five years ago so really learned about the different areas and then a year after also helped a friend from FL find a place when he moved up.

  • west seattle is cheap, its a hole, but its cheap.
the internation district is as well.

surrounding ares north of the city 30 miles or so are as well, marysville comes to mind

  • South Seattle like on MLK blvd or near E. Marginal Way. The cheapest is a little farther south like Seatac and Southpark, but not as good of an area.
  • What is the difference between washington DC and washington ?|195993

there is one near virginia and the other one is on top of oregon. why is there 2 washingtons ?

  • washington dc is named after george washington our first president ON RECORD and idk about the other washington hmm it_s interesting

    can you answer mine?

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?

  • Why is there a New York city and a New York State?

Why is there an Augusta Maine and and Augusta Georgia?

Why are there two Dakotas? Why do we need a New England when we have an Old England?

Washington is a city in a federal district called the District of Columbia.

Washington is a State that borders British Columbia.

    That_s it.

    Word.

  • Washington State is a state.

Washington D.C. is not a state, it_s the district of columbia. Probably named Washington D.C. because Washington was our first president and D.C. is the home of the president.

  • Washington is a state
and Washington DC is actually a district DC stands for District of Columbia. So its is different and they are in different locations.

  • Washington is the state and Washington DC is the capital of the US

  • why not? it was not originally called washington dc. they changed it. washington is a state and dc is the district of columbia which is its own area.

  • Washington DC is the Capital of the U.S.

Washington is a State or the Person George Washington

  • Washington State is on the west coast, and Washington D.C. is on the east coast.

  • george washington is famous like that
  • Is it a must in USA to have 2bdr appartments if we have a baby?|195595

    Dear Sirs ;),

If there is any law in US MA and nearby states to have not less then 2bdrm apartment for a family of 3 including a new born baby? We also have a small dog.

1-bdrm apartments would perfectly suit us as we plan to be close to our baby even at night for the first 1-2 years.

    Thanks!

  • It_s up to the landlord.......a one bedroom would usually be rented to one person. They cannot discriminate against children, but they can tell you they don_t allow dogs, or they already have it rented. Do yourself a favor and get a two bedroom...it_s much better for you and the child. Plus, where are you going to put all the toys that you will surely accumulate?

  • There is absolutely no law regarding legal occupancy of an apartment. I would be very careful with the dog and the baby though. The dog may become jealous and you might want to keep an eye out while the baby is quite young.

1 bedroom sounds much too small for all four of you. Don_t lock yourself into a situation that may be impossible. There will be times when one of you may want a nap, or someone may be sick, or the dog needs a time out or something.

  • Yes you can_t legally share a room with your child! All that_s going to do is make your child suffer in a year or two when you decide it finally needs it_s own room! Then you_ll be having to let the kid cry it out because it wants back in your room! Do youselves and the kid a favor and don_t do this, you_ll all regret it!

  • No, there_s no law.

However, a landlord does not have to rent to you if:

    1) No dogs are allowed
    2) There is lead paint.

Also, 1 BR is fine when you have an infant, but I think once the child is 1 year or older it has to have its own room. Creeeeeeeeeeepy (mommy and daddy doing it will leave permanent scars).

  • actually, you CAN legally share a one bedroom with a child... A studio is one adult, one child or two adults. With a one bedroom, you could definitely live there with your baby. There is no law against that.

  • Nope, no law stating that. And I live in MA.
  • Things to do during the holiday season in Chicago?|179068

I_m going to Chicago next weekend and I was wondering what are some things that are must-sees during the holiday season? Where are the best places to go?

  • winter wonder fest at navy pier!!!!!!!

  • Some great Chicago attractions:

#1 -The The Museum of Science and Industry is a truly wonderful museum. You can go into a real coal mine, look at a real NASA space pod (Apollo 11? or 12), at planes, models of Downtown Chicago, submarines, trains... this is the best museum in Chicago. And be SURE to go to see one of their IMAX movies. The movie is projected on a dome, and it makes for the most SPECTACULAR film viewing on the planet, I swear on it!

#2 - The John Hancock Observatory lets you look down about a 100 stories at Downtown Chicago. It_s AMAZING. The Sears Tower lets you do the same thing, but I personally suggest the John Hancock Building. (Don_t do this on a day when it_s foggy--you_ll see nothing.)

#3 - Field Museum of Natural History. This is a pretty neat place. You can see the T-Rex dinosaur skeletons Sue here. There are easily a million artifacts here. Be warned that many exhibits here take a LONG time to look/go through.

#4 - There is the Chicago Line Cruises that let_s you tour Chicago_s architecture from a boat. It_s interesting and sometimes humorous. But it_s a bit expensive, and eats up about 2 hours. But it IS nice.

#5 - Broadway, of coarse, is here. _Wicked_ is playing, so is _Jersey Boys,_ and other amazing shows. The setback, though, is trying to get a seat.

(This isn_t Broadway, but it_s just as good, if not better: the Blue Men Group! They are the BEST permanent show in Chicago. But once again, it_s hell trying to get tickets.)

#6 - The Adler Planetarium is worth mentioning. If you like astronomy or stars at all, you_ll love this place.

    Food:
#1 - Pizzeria Uno, but you need to eat at the ORIGINAL one, located at 29 E Ohio Street. This is the original _Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza_ as they say. Their oven is like, 50 years old, so the crust on the deep dish pizza is to die for, and the pizza is delicious.

(but WARNING: this is most popular place in all of Chicago for pizza. No reservations allowed. Usually takes 30 minutes for just one person to get a seat, much less a group. So yeah, the pizza is amazing, but it_s not worth waiting an hour for. But try your luck.)

Now, if you_re looking for Christmas-oriented fun, here_s some ideas:

    - On November 22 is the annual Magnificent Mile Parade followed by some wicked fireworks.
    - Macy_s goes all all out on Christmas, noting their annual giant tree, strung with literally thousands of lights and ornaments.
    - Millennium Park has ice-skating
    - The Museum of Science and Industry has a tree-ornament display.
    - Navy Pier puts on some festive shows.
    - The Chicago Botanic Garden has some really magical Christmas displays.

Whatever you decide to do, have fun!

How do i go about applying to work in NY?|103995

Im 19 years old and have left college but am planning on moving to New York either next year or the year after and want to work whilst im there. One of my family friends lives there and did the same thing. Does this help? Also, is the green card lottery a valid option. Thanks

  • You will need a working VISA i guess so my advice is check out the website and get some info from there. Then next step will to be to schedule an appointment regarding working is US.

  • i would contact that friend that did the same thing so you can find out how they immigrated.
  • Are there any bus lines other than Greyhound that go from Houston To Dallas?|187259

Greyhound has gotten so hopped up and self important that they_re charging outrageous fees to go from Houston to Dallas. ($167 was the cheapest I could find. You could fly for that!) There is the UT bus, which is much less, but you have to either be a student or know a student, and I fall into neither of those categories. So another bus line would be really fantastic. Help?

  • I really don_t think there_s another bus company (that_s why the price is so high...no competition)
Megabus (www.megabus.com) is in the midwest and if that ever comes to Texas it would force greyhound to drop their proces.

  • why not fly? just wondering
  • What are the best tourist attractions in Tennessee and Virginia?|169030

I want one that is cheap, and fun for the whole family!

  • well in TN there is the Great Smoky Mountains, Dollywood, Gatlinburg, etc in the far east part of the state. In the Chattanooga are there is Ruby Falls, the Incline Railway, Rock City, civil war battlefields, the aquarium and riverfront area. In the Nashville area, there is the COuntry music Hall of Fame, the Grand Ole Opry, tons of mansions and plantation homes to tour, more civil war stuff, a fabulous downtown, tons of honky tonks with live free music, 2 huge lakes with beaches, a water park, great parks for playing and hiking, museums , a farmers market and much more. In the west, there is of course Graceland, Elvis Presley_s home, Beale Street with great BBQ and music, the Peabady Hotel with the parading ducks, the river, etc. TN is a beautiful state and driving anywhere is gorgeous. Not sure about VA- sorry.... but have fun in TN!

  • I think nanny411 covered TN.. In VA there are beaches, Luray Caverns, Blue Ridge Parkway, Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, there_s a lot of stuff to do in the Hampton Roads area(Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, VA Beach) I really like Williamsburg because you can tour the old town and they have little shops with people dressed in period costumes its really fun even for kids, also, Busch Gardens is in Williamsburg too and I_m all about theme parks! Have fun!!

  • Not going there.
  • When will Disney begin construction on the new Fantasyland?|179730

If we visit in August, would Fantasyland be there still with all of its rides running, or will they have torn it apart and already have begun to move everything around? What are they changing besides Dumbo?

  • i belive that they start this month. but knowing Disney they will most likely change Fantasyland in sections but keep what ever they have completed hidden until 2013. So if u go in August then there should be a lot of it still open.
Everything north of Dumbo including mickey_s toon town fair will be changed. Everything east of Dumbo until the teacups( they will be leaving the teacups alone, they may repaint them at some point in the 3 year process though) will be changed. Its a Small World and everything else in that building and across from it will remain the same.
There are rumors that say that they will be putting Mickey_s Toon Town Fair some place else in the park or at another park. They will be keeping the barnstormer at the magic kingdom, but move it some place else.
What will be going into Fantasyland is areas for the main Disney princesses. For Bell, her town and the Beasts calste. Sleeping Beaty the cotage out in the woods. Little Mermaid a new ride and her normal spot will be changed a bit. Dumbo will sit at the back and now have two rides( fire or ice), u will walk though a circus tent and play interactive games while u wait to go on the ride.
That is what is going into the Fantasyland.

  • hi.
i_m not sure if the construction has started as of yet but its supposed to start early in 2010. everything besides pixie hollow will be completed by 2012 and pixie hollow will be completed by 2013.
disney tries not to disturb pre-exsisting attractions as they work on new ones but i think you will notice this constuction in a big way as mickey_s toontown fair will be completely replaced to make room for the expansion which i find sad :( but i_ve heard they will be putting it somewhere else so it won_t be gone forever.
don_t wory i_m sure your trip will still be magical though.

What are some things to do in Boston near Logan International Airport?|100732

I will be coming into town on a Friday early morning and my flight does not leave until 2pm. What can I do near the airport to see a few sights? It will be my first time in town.

  • You can take the Blue line downtown. Go to Fanuel Hall marketplace like all the other tourists, it_s fun and they have a mock Cheers to eat at.
There is not much to do right near the airport unless you want to work out at the Marriot.

  • You_ll want to take the Subway for transportation. It_s simple and understandable so it_s the best way to travel in my opinion. In Boston there is the New England Aquarium, Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, Boston Common, Public Gardens, Chinatown, Museum of Science, Museum of Fine Arts, there_s the Freedom Trail and waterfront and wharfs as well.

  • How early is _early_ on Friday morning????.
  • Is Boston a difficult city in which to find a white-collar job for those without a prestigious degree?|113335

I recently received a degree from a state university in the midwest, and I_m thinking about relocating to Boston. However, my concern is this: since there are multiple prestigious schools pumping out graduates in the Boston area, I_m wondering if people like me that went to _average_ schools have extra difficulty establishing careers there.

Is there any validity to this concern of mine?

  • Yes, there is a certain degree of validity to this concern. Employers look more highly upon those with degrees from prestigious institutions. That is why there is a distinction between missouri state university and harvard university. It_s only natural.

Now of course it puts you at a disadvantage, especially in a city like Boston, but don_t think for a second that you can_t easily get a decent job here. You will probably have to move your way up in the company, while some hot shot fresh out of yale might not have to. That is the perk of going to a top school. you will have to work harder to establish yourself.

The only drawback to this whole scenario is that Boston is definitely one of the most expensive cities to live in, especially when it comes to renting (as I assume you will doing initially). Make sure you have plenty of cash to fall back on and a job lined up before you head to Boston. That is crucical, but once you are there just work hard and after a few years you_re degree will mean much less compared to your work experience and credentials.

Good luck and remember that boston is a great city. hit up the countless Irish bars, especially the authentic ones in South Boston.

People in Boston can intimidate outsiders especially from the midwest and the south, because midwesterners and southerners have this incorrect assumption that they are looked down upon by Bostonians. The only people that look down upon people because of geographical origin in Boston are the lunatic yuppies that are transplants themselves. These lunatics are few and far between unlike what is portrayed in the media, unless of course you head down to Jamaica Plain.

Also in the workforce don_t dwell too much on where you went to school, because if you can perform like the next guy then does it really matter? That is what your employer will look for.

  • Yes. People with Master_s Degrees end up working as motorcycle mechanics for $15 an hour! The competition for good jobs is unbelieveable.

  • They have lots of insurance companies there
And why not try the mass transit system.
Ex NJ person worked for mass transit. good pay not a hard job and will get one heck of pension one day

  • It will depend on what your career area is. I work in high tech in the Boston area. Right now we see few _American_ kids coming out of school looking for work, there are a lot of international kids coming out of the schools, also looking for a company to sponsor their work visa. We tend to shy away from those because of the hassle factor.

Companies like Raytheon, because of the nature of the work they do can only hire Americans (natural born or naturalized). If your an American and I_d try Raytheon, I know they are hiring.

Also those prestigious degrees don_t necessarily do much more than get someone an easy path to an interview. I_ve interviewed candidates with MIT degrees that I_m not sure could tie their shoes.

My degree is from Arizona, but I was recruited to my Boston job based on reputation. I had several years of experience working at a competitor to my current employer.

Biotechnology is huge in Boston right now, if your degree is in Biotech I doubt you will have trouble. Also look at a trade rag called Mass High Tech, this will give you feel for whats going on. Also consider southern NH, Portsmouth and Nashua are about 50 miles from downtown Boston. NH has no income tax or sales tax, I live in southern NH but work on the Rt128 high tech corridor.

  • Where are some good abandoned locations in the Broward County area?|165182

I am a photographer and I always shoot on location. I am going to be shooting this weekend about an hour away from where I normally shoot and I don_t know of any really good locations in Broward County, specifically the Plantation area. I normally use abandoned places and urban decay as my backdrops for my images. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

If you seek abandonments in FL there is only one place to look. It is a semi private club so read the rules.

  • If they were good, they wouldn_t be abandoned.

Just curious. Who has driving distance of over an hour to work and how is it like? How do you manage?|187252

Im asking because, Im trying to decide weather or not to take a job?. The distance from where i live right now is 1 and half hours. I live in a really small town in michigan and there are barely any jobs around here and the nearest is in bigger cities. I dont know weather I should do this or not. I was planning on moving to Kalamazoo michigan which is 40 minutes from the job but wont be moved in until end of july. What is your suggestion. Thanx in advance

  • Hi there!
I_ve driven anywhere from 30 minute to 1 hr 45 minutes (15 min. of traffic) to get to work!
In all honesty, it gets very monotonous unless you have nice scenery or countryside to travel through (not likely though!)
I would suggest moving, because you_ll save yourself some piece of mind, some sleep, some sanity, and when its all said and done- quite a bit of gas money!

How did i manage? Audio books on tape..I found that I was stimulating my brain as well as passing time..(just make sure to watch the road though! haha)
I also just listened to the radio, NPR, cds, XM, that type of thing..or pretend that whatever song came on next I was going to sing like I was auditioning for american idol.
(yes..i got weird looks, but the time passed)

Best of luck to you :)

  • Thanks for the advice, It really helped me with my long drive I had to my interview. Dont know if I got the position yet.!!!!

  • Don;t know what whay kind of job, but can you work from home?
Lots of people do that now instead of commuting.

  • I will say get it! I did not have a car so I needed to take the bus. The bus takes 2 hrs TWO LONG HOURS! in a car just 30 min. I did it and thanks to that I was able to buy a car!

  • Well I drive about 45 minutes to work, and well if you aint used of it then you might not like it. I mean get some tunes to listen to, take ur phone wit u, it took me about 5 months to get used of the long drive but now its nothing, 45 minutes breezes by and i dont even care about how long it takes. You will get used of it in time. Hope this helps ya out and good luck on ur job if u get it.

  • I do. I leave my home at 745am drive my boys (4,1) to grammas for day care, then go to work on the opposite side of town. I don_t mind cause I drive a Hyundai which saves on gas, but the travel time is terrible if I don_t get my coffee first! Do you value sleeping in? Or can you go to bed early?
  • What are the main banks in the Seattle area that are ubundant?|187733

I know there is Bank of America and that is the most seen, but I wanted to know if there are any other choices for someone moving in from out of state.

  • Bank Of America and Washington Mutual are probably the most prevalent in the area, followed up by Key Bank and Wells Fargo next. There_s also BECU (Boeing Employee Credit Union), which anyone residing in Washington can now become a member of and who has pretty decent interest rates! Aside from that, there are some smaller banks, but they might make it harder to find available ATM_s unless it is one that you live next to. Then, it_ll just depend on where you specifically move to in the state.

  • Washington Mutual and BECU are pretty popular

  • wamu, (washington mutual) friendly service
  • What are the most easterly and westerly states in the USA?|197952

maine and alaska. the alaskan islands stretch out further west than hawaii.

  • Puerto Rico is not a state, it is a US owned territory, there is a difference. Count 48 states on the mainland US and 2 for Alaska and Hawaii.

At any rate, If you take a look at a US map, the most easternly state is Maine.

  • purto rico
    hawaii

  • Puerto Rico is a state?

I thought it was Hawaii and Maine
  • Should I take the plunge and transplant from LA to Chicago?|179138

So, I recently have had the opportunity to relocate to Chicago from LA. I have lived in California my whole life, the LA area, and frankly, I am soooo over it. My parents recently moved to Hoffman Estates and have been begging me to move out there. So, I am stuck, because I love being near my family and I want to get out of here but I am not sure if Chicago is any better for me in terms of job outlook, meeting people, etc. Any suggestions, advice, please! I need it bad!

  • Move to the Wrigleyville, Lakeview, Lincoln Park area and I_m guessing you_ll love it as far as the social aspect of your live here. Plenty of people to meet, plenty of restaurants and bars right outside your front door, lots of activities (sports and recreation in the parks, street fairs every weekend in the summer, etc.)

As far as employment, it depends on what you do for a living. If you have a _career_, you_ll have to check websites like Monster.com or Careerbuilder.com to see what_s available here. If you_re just looking for any old job, you can probably find something, working in a restaurant (there_s a new one opening every other day), a coffee shop (same as the restaurants), etc.

Yes, the winters can be kind of rough, but you get used to it pretty fast. Just bundle up as if you_re moving to Alaska (kidding... sort of). You don_t really need a car since we have some pretty decent public transportation.. when it stays on the tracks. The cost of living doesn_t have to be that high if you know how to shop for a bargain. Most people trudge line robots to the big grocery stores, but if you shop around and the smaller ones you find better deals. The big stores tend to gouge you. There are cheap clothing stores like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, H_M where you can find designer stuff at cheap prices. There_s cheap entertainment like comedy shows for $5, live bands almost every night of the week playing in a bar somewhere, the free street fairs (well, almost free... most charge about $5 to get in).

It_s probably best if you visit for a week or so to see the city in the day and night. It_s a big place and there_s a lot to see.

  • I think you will be in for a serious culture shock. Obviously the weather is a huge difference ( have you ever experienced 10 degree weather?), but it is much more than that. It is an old, cold city and not clean. I also had the same opportunity a few years ago, my company based in Irvine was bought out by a company in Chicago and they offered me a job there. After thinking about the lifestyle there, I declined and moved to Florida. Now I pay less than half as much for real estate, have no state income tax, and walk around in shorts and flip flops in the middle of winter. If I were you, i would stay where you are and just visit your family once in a while. There are plenty of non stop flights from Cali to Chicago.

  • Do what you want, what type of field do you work in because there is a ton of opportunity in Chicago. The weather sucks compared to LA though. Be prepared to deal with cold winters. Like I said though do what you feel is right and if that_s moving to Chicago. GO FOR IT!

  • Job market is very tight right here now. Weather sucks compared to LA and Hoffman Estates is an over grown trailer park. not the nicest suburb by any means.
that said - give it a try!

  • I would visit first but in my opinion, northern Illinois is a craphole.

  • We regret moving to Chicago from Florida, and are actually now contemplating moving to Southern California or back to Florida.

Chicago is a very ethnocentric area. The people/media really believe that the world revolves around Chicago. They don_t like people from California too much (or New York for that matter) so be prepared for a lot of people to just snub you.

I agree with the person who moved to Florida. Chicago is WAY too expensive to live. However, you should be use to expensive things being in California.

I hope you have a crappy diet, because all you_ll be bombarded with here is fatty deep dish pizza, italian sausages, anything polish, brats, etc. etc. etc. You will gain weight moving here. Oh, and forget about getting fresh seafood, it doesn_t exist, and the seafood around here tastes like an oil refinery.

A previous person mentioned 10 degree weather, try more like NEGATIVE 30 degree wind chills. If you want to know what that feels like, go into your sewing box and take all the needles and stick them into your cheeks. That_s what it feels like.

Overall, unless you have a job lined up that will pay 6 figures, don_t bother moving here. Perhaps you can go visit your parents for a solid month and really get the feel of what Chicago is all about. For some strange reason, a lot of people do like it here. And as I always say, you_ll never know unless you try. Just don_t make a hasty decision.

  • Have you had the chance to visit? If not I suggest you take a couple weeks off, come to Chicago and get a feel for the place. Some people will just love it and some cant stand it, especially warm weather folks.

As someone whose lived in Chicago I personally dislike LA and all of southern california. I felt like I was on a diffrent planet and was completely out of place. I_d never want to move there. Might go the same way for you but the other way around.

The weather will be a lot diffrent than your used to but you_ll actually have a change of seasons which a lot of people enjoy. The winter can be brutal. This last winter was the coldest in over two decades so its really not a good comparison, so on average expect freezing temps with lows from 0 -10 F and occasional windchills dipping into the negatives. The teeth chattering -30 has only happen like 2-3 years in my whole life. But hey, at least you get snow!

Much of the city around lincoln park can be fun to visit and live in if you can but to be closer to your parents I_d recommend Schaumburg, Elk Grove, or Itasca for fun shopping, close to transportation and stuff to do and also close to where many large companies are located.

The job market is a little tight right now but its tight across much of the city. I was let go from a job 2 months ago and was able to secure a new and higher paying job within a month so its not that bad depending on what your career is in.
  • Im going to nyc and bringing back lots of shopping!if i cut out labels lose bags and receipts, can i get fined?|111970

so is there anyway they can prove ive brought the stuff there? i mean i know its obvious but in the eyes of the law, will they have a leg to stand on? thanks amanda

  • If you cut out the labels how will they know that you bought them in New York? They may look new because you bought them to go to New York!!

Anyway, I am a New York regular and I always buy loads and have never been stopped. You watch next time I will now.

New York is Fab have fun shopping.

  • so long as your not bringing back a full container of shopping, you will be alright

  • i suggest that you hardly take any clothes with you, then buy loads and wear some of it whilst your there. so the tags wont be on, but that shouldnt matter because you couldnt return it when u get back home anyway! that will mean if you do get stopped, the clothes will be slighlty more worn!

but the likely hood is that u wont get stopped!

have a great time! im so jealous

    happy shopping!!

  • Big mistake cutting out the labels! Why is it against the law to buy things in NY anyway..................maybe you are in another country or something..............why not just box them and ship them to your home?? I_m confused.

  • if every does not have tags and no receipts found then you are fine.....make sure you don_t leave any shopping bags and boxes for them to suspect you got it recently....

  • Whaaaaat???

  • Buy your items---all that you want and then SHIP them home via United Parcel Service... you still have to pay a duty but it will be much less then if you tried to bring the items back with you on the plane or boat or however you are getting back to Great Britian........besides, smuggling IS a crime...and you really do NOT want that kind of hassle... ESPECIALLY since the fines associated with this crime are more then TRIPLE what you would pay to have to parcels shipped home to you...

  • Im going to New York next year an want to do loads of shopping too. Ive been told by other people to cut out the labels and stuff too and to try and wear a lot of the stuff aswell. Im guna give it ago if they pull me i_ll say there clothes i took over but never wore.

How much money would you take to a strip club in Vegas?|184471

I am going in 2 weeks, and I already know that it is going to be a wild weekend.

  • No more than you can afford to lose. Same thing with gambling. Have fun!

  • Well, the drinks are expensive and you tip as you desire but there is NO difference in Vegas strip clubs than in any other state. They are not prostitutes becuase that is illegal in Vegas.

  • Slots, drinks, girls, shopping, food, tips, taxi, other odd things you will find to blow money on..... Depending on income and gambeling ways plus if you have family..... $600-$2500

  • Take as much as you think a stranger is worth. Not too much though, it is sad what alcohol does to horny men.

    Thank you.

  • Take at least 2 - 3 hours in order to really enjoy it

  • First answer is right. 3 hours will give you time to really check everything out.

  • I would say 2-3 hours should be sufficient
  • Can my grandparents take my children to US for a vacation without the parents? Any document needed?|175875

My parents-in-law have children living in the Baltimore whom they visit frequently. Since it is summer vacation here in the Philippines, they wanted to visit with my children this time. I worry about the preparations and cost of tickets if they will not be allowed to get into the US with my children. My children are aged 11 and 8 years old.

  • You should get a Power of Attorney authorizing your parents to travel to and from the United States with your children. You should also get a Special Medical Power of Attorney giving your parents permission to authorize treatment in case of emergency or sickness while they are in the States.

What is the cheapest way to get from George Bush Intl Airport to Downtown Houston?|193804

Im travelling into IAH on saturday and want to know whats the cheapest way to get to our hotel in Downtown Houston. There are 5 of us. Any ideas?

  • Dang... George Bush has an airport named after him? Anyway, try these walking directions from Google. It_s only 17.3 miles.

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d_source=s

  • Cheapest would be walking of course.
    Then bus.
Then light rail. (Doesn_t go directly to IAH, so you would have to bus it, then light rail).
    Then taxi.
    So on, and so forth.

  • Supershuttle is the best value. 800-BLUE-VAN.

  • Check to see if your hotel has a complimentary bus from the airport.

  • walking is the cheapest

  • walking

  • How much will you offer? I have a truck.

  • a taxi

  • walking would be free.
  • How to get wine drink coupons in Napa and Sonoma?|167141

Does anyone know where I can get free tasting coupons for Napa and Sonoma? Also for Russian River Valley.

    Thanks!

  • I_m not sure if they still have them, but the Napa Visitor_s Center sold wine tasting coupon books. Supposedly each taste at any of the listed places was only 10 cents. Our adult kids used them, and every single time the tasting room waved the dime for us. You might want to look into Visitors Centers in all those areas you_re looking at.
  • Minimum age to reserve a room at the Tropicana?|172487

I_m going to Vegas next month and I was planning to stay at the Tropicana, but I_ve read conflicting things on several websites, do you have to be 21 to reserve a room or not? Because I_ve heard 18 and 21. Does anyone know? And are their any other hotels that I could stay at since I_m only 19?

  • The 21 rule only applies to gambling and drinking. The legal age for everything else is 18. If you look at their reservation page it does not state any age restrictions therefore and adult is 18 and over. As long as you have an ID and credit card you should be fine. Pay in advance and they will only briefly look at your ID to compare it to the credit card.

  • Well, when I was in Vegas 5 years ago, and I don_t think they_ve changed the check in rules that much, it_s 21 to reserve a room there. Atleast it was that age at the New York New York. Since you have to be 21 there to gamble anyway. I know that for a fact since it was posted at the lobby check in when we arrived. If you are under 21 you need to be with someone, probably a parent or guardian, to be at the hotel and be a guest. I don_t believe there are any hotels, atleast on the strip, that you can reserve a room if you are under 21.

Check for hotels off the strip to see if you need to be 21 to reserve them. Yes you may need to take a cab to get onto the strip and that can get pricey if you are planning on spending every night on there.

  • 21 in Las Vegas. They will ask for ID.

Anyways, can you tell me all the stores as much as you know? If possible, you can give me the map or address of some stores, especiall in California and Chicago. Thank you !!

Im taking the train from Babylon train station and Im trying to get to Giants stadium. Where will I have to switch trains, and will I need a taxi from the train station to Giants stadium or is it very close?

  • Once you get into the city there are many options. You can take the train to Newark Penn and then transfer to one running to Secaucus. I think there is usually a shuttle bus at that point. Alternatively NYC often runs special buses from NYC to the Meadowlands. Usually events at the meadowlnads have a posting of travel options and a line to the appropriate location so you can check schedules.

What are the best areas to live in San Francisco and what are the areas to avoid?|166249

My bf _ I used to live in downtown Kansas City, MO and we loved the nightlife and downtown living so we want to find that in San Francisco, albeit as cheaply as possible - I don_t think we_re going to get away with anything less than $1000/month for rent, but we_d like to keep it as close to that as possible.

  • Get on Craigslist.com and do a search in SF and for neighborhoods, scroll down to Nob Hill. Nob Hill is up on a hill and between North Beach and Downtown. It_s beautiful and very SF. You can find a studio for $900-$1250...sometimes a 1 bedroom. Also, check out North Beach. The Tenderloin is cheap as too and it is very city like. There are a lot of bums, junkies and hookers too if you_re into that sort of thing. They don_t ever mess with you though. OH and just for sh*ts and giggles try the Marina. I found a place there that was a 1 bedroom with a garage and yard with utilities paid for $1300!
I would avoid Bayview and Hunterspoint...there is nothing down there and it is pretty rough
I also forgot to add that the Mission is a fun place for young couples...haha...i sound like a nerd. But good dive bars and mexi food

  • I would recommend living in Castro Valley. It has clean water and cleanish air. It has a great public transportation system, plus you have access to the El train (BART) that takes you to SF. Castro Valley is pretty safe too. Avoid Oakland at all costs, it is extremely dangerous and has gang trouble. Fremont, Union city, and Hayward are all about the same. They have less gang issues than Oakland, but they have terrible water and not so clean air. Plus they are very poor areas. San Lorenzo and San Leandro are very close to Castro Valley, but they have some gang issues and they are much dirtier. San Francisco is a great place, but it is very expensive, and the amount of homeless people there is unheard of. Castro Valley is just East of Hayward, just so you know that im not talking about the Castro District in SF. I would highly recommend living in Castro Valley though, its a great place for people who want to live close to the action, but don_t want to pay overpriced rent.

  • You can_t find any place in SF for under $1000, a studio in good area for $2000/month( 600 sq ft), in bad area for $1200, you may get $850 efficiency studio(250 sq ft, no kitchen) in tenderloin area.

  • Richmond district if you look around.
  • Is there a public location in South Carolina to shoot off fireworks?|165851

I_ll be traveling towards The North Carolina and South Carolina area. I know in NC its illegal. Is there any places in South Carolina where your allowed to shoot off your fireworks?

  • you can def shoot off fireworks in sc wherever you want. they shoot them off in neighborhoods where houses are crammed together, so the rural thing is not an issue. its legal.

  • The answer is in your question. It is illegal. What if the fireworks backfire in your face? What if it hits someone? What would you do then? I would not shoot fireworks. I am sure you do not want to end up on CNN headline news.

  • not sure help me out please. question to anyone from SC http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AlUS4jQ.YTHMdgLn.sAP5Zzsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090705165645AApkBu0

What is the best way to book a Las Vegas vacation for 9 people?|164884

We would like to stay in one large suite or two of the same in a strip hotel, MGM Grand, Paris LV, etc. We would like to get a _package_ deal- airfare and room included if possible. Or we could book seperately and stay in different rooms. We thought it would be less expensive to get one room and multiple flights.

  • I would advise just having everyone book separately. Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a discount group rate in Las Vegas and the hotels will actually charge you more if you book as a group, since they see it as more work. The only exception would be if several hundred people were going. Package deals are sometimes better than booking hotel and flight separately, but not always. You should look at getting the best airfare and best hotel price. Then compare it with some of the hotel packages. Southwest Vacations, if they serve your area, will usually have the lowest air/hotel rates. American West (now U.S. Airways) would be the second best place. You should also check with Travelocity, Cheaptickets, and Las Vegas Direct.

You should also see how separate air and hotel does in terms of price. You will find that you have much more flexibility in the flight times and airline, which can be very important to people. Good package deal rates often arrive and leave at very odd times, or have multiple stops and layovers, which can cut your vacation short. Consider using Cheaptickets.com to locate a good airfare. Also check with Southwest. Next, try the individual hotel websites for hotel rates. You should also, compare them with third-party hotel reservation sites like LasVegasDirect, Vegas.com, Travelocity, Expedia, and TripRes.

While you can save by having 4 people stay in one room, you will be charged an extra person fee that is around $30-$60 per night, so you need to read the details when making a choice. Also, it can be very crowded to have so many people in a hotel room, so you might want to consider that too. Lastly, suites in Las Vegas are very limited and will cost you much more than getting 2 rooms next to each other.

  • Get one huge suite and multiple flights......

  • go to the best website hotels.com

  • Go to www.priceline.com and select packages and then your destination and dates.... or try www.travelocity.com or even www.orbitz.com

I love priceline...they have the best deals and the best packages...you can book your plane, car and hotel in a low cost package for as many people as needed...

  • well im flying alot too because my uncle is in the PGA tour so im parcially traveling with hime in england and such but the flight that i found the cheapest was at
    www.allegiantair.com
they have flights for like $79. but that is from sanford florida to grand rapids michigan but its alot better than paying $300. right. but they have limited flights but i know they have some to las vegas and you can book things like hotel and car and such
  • Where is a vetrans hospital in hawaii at and is it a good hospital?|165446

My husband is a vetran and rated at 100 percent. We loved the hospital in San Diego, they were really thourough, but here in Ok they suck big time. We are looking at hawaii for a possible future move in a year or so after our baby is born and want to look into a veterans hospital and what not.

  • Tripler AMC is the military hospital for Hawaii. I delivered our son there and it was wonderful. Never had any problems what so ever. My husband also saw some specialists there and they were top ones too. Tripler will also covers patients that need special care from the rest of the Pacific like Guam, Japan, Australia, etc..

Now I do know of some people who didn_t have the greatest of treatment there but that is just like any other hospital out there. We as a family found that they were as good as San Diego if in not some ways better. It really depends on what you are needing and what you expect to how you will feel about the hospital.

  • The Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home opened in 2007 in Hilo and is the only long-term care home in the state for U.S. military veterans. It has 95 beds and is fully operational. I believe there are certain requirements, however, including a one-year residency in Hawaii. It_s not a hospital, but a care home.

  • It_s Tripler, but they do not have a good reputation.

  • There_s KVMH (Kauai Veteran_s Memorial Hospital) on Kauai, and they_re the best hospital on the island. The only problem with it is it_s on the other side of the island, in Kekaha, which is about 30 min. from Lihue and 45-60 from Wailua and Kapaa. If you were looking to move to Kauai, you may want to check out houses on the South side (Kalaheo is nice, Poipu, Moloa_a) or the West side (Kekaha, Waimea, Ele_ele) to be a little closer.

  • There is plenty of Hospitals in Oahu, Hawaii if this is the island you are moving to.

Trust me you will love the hospitals here. It might be boring but most hospitals are like that.

  • What is the best way to get from Saint Louis to Chicago in less than two days?|140248

I would like to leave Saint Louis, spend several hours in Chicago (preferably in the afternoon) and leave Chicago all in the same day. However, I don_t have access to a car. I want a reliable, generally on-time way to get there.

  • That_s tricky without a car. What about the MegaBus? It typically offers a 1:00 am-ish departure...so you_d sleep on the bus and be in the city by the early morning. then you can take it back that evening!

Depending on the day you want to travel, you can get really incredible rates.

Or you could rent a car.

Amtrak has departures between the two several times a day as well.

And Southwest Airlines offers inexpensive fares at multiple hours of the day in and out of midway.

  • if you don_t have a car
the best way would be to fly
or take one of the few trains that go between Chicago and St. Louis each day
if some how you can get a car its about a 5 hour drive between Chicago and St. Louis
    or take greyhound

  • Why don_t you fly??? American has hourly flights from O_hare _ Southwest has the same from Midway. Your next option is Greyhound. Good luck!!
  • Where is a good place to view the Niagara Falls fireworks from the US side?|139557

My family (two adults and four children from 19m to 10y) are planning to be in Buffalo December 31st. We would like to see the fireworks but don_t know a good location that won_t require an expensive reservation. Does anyone have a recommendation for a place with a good view that is child-appropriate and won_t cost more than $100 for us (i.e., a restaurant)? Thank you.

How long does it take to get a Florida State ID?|152363

My friend needs to fly from Orlando to Detroit and she doesn_t have a photo id; if she goes for her state id will she have it within the week?

  • In the state I live in, it takes about an hour. You go to the DMV and take your Social Security card, your birth certificate, and a piece of mail with your current address, preferably a bill. Then you fill out the little form, pay the fee and get your picture taken. Ten minutes later they hand you the card and off you go.

  • Is this still correct? I just phoned the Osceola County office and they said it could take up to 4 weeks! Is the guy off his rocker? Because I was really surprised it wasn_t done the same day!

  • Yeah, I got mine in like an hour. That includes wait time and the fact that the screwed my name up the first time (I have a really odd name). You just need to bring like two forms of ID (birth certificate, SS card, etc.), fill out the paperwork, pay the fee, sign your name and have them take your photo.

This_ll tell you what to bring

    http://www.flhsmv.gov/ddl/faqkeys.html#U

  • you go in, fill out papers and get it right then. the wait depends on how busy they are. so it can be 15 minutes to an hour.
  • What are some good places to visit in and near Houston?|152844

I want to take my daughter and 2 of her friends out on a small road trip. They are all 13. It is going to be for my daughter_s birthday, but I don_t know where to go. I would love it if you would help me out.

  • Kemah would be alot of fun. There is a rollercoaster, great seafood restaurants, a boat that goes out into the bay, a huge aquarium, carnival games, etc. And there will probably be boys there. Most 13 year old girls are boy crazy.

Or you could head to Galveston Island. Lots of things to do there.

If you want to drive further, the Riverwalk in San Antonio would be fun.

  • moody garedens, the natural musuem of science, the musuem of health, But no more astroworld

  • check www.houston.citysearch.com for good recommendations.
I recommend Kemah, Moody Gardens and the muesuems.
They will also like the Dave _ Busters (formerly known as Gillians) at I-10 (close to IKEA). There is an IMAX theater and they could watch the Hannah Montana Concert 3D movie

  • all of the above plus Galveston Island.

  • there is also a zoo in houston. i used to take my grand daughter there years ago

  • If they_re 13, they_re bound to love the Galleria. Also, check out the museums and zoo. Moody Gardens is always a lot of fun if you_re looking for something more educational. You could also take them to the beach in Galveston--it_s not the prettiest beach, but it_s still fun. Kemah is also a lot of fun. Also look into the Downtown Aquarium.

  • Austin.
  • How much would I spend on tolls driving from Florida to Long Island?|148919

I will be driving from Florida to Long Island and would get an estimate on how much i will spend in tolls

  • About $50.

  • There are no tolls in Florida on Sunday.

No tolls in Georgia, South and North Carolina and Virginia (don_t go over the toll bridge to the Eastern Shore at Virginia Beach).

Delaware has a toll bridge. The New Jersey Turnpike is a toll road. And the Verazano and Gothals Bridges have tolls.

I_d say $40 should cover all the tolls.

    3. $0.35 For each 47.5 seconds waiting time and/or traffic delay ($26.53 per hour).

    kind of high
as for your question to Santa Monica
to play it save I always say about a hour
(it could be faster depending where in Santa Monica you want to go and where you start your trip
(like if you started it from Highland and Hollywood
it would take longer because you will have to transfer to another bus to get to Santa Monica
but if you board a bus at say Santa Monica and Fairfax
and wanted to the 3rd street promenade then the bus ride
(since its one bus would be about 25-30 minutes)
    as for getting to Malibu
    I would say a hour and 1/2
(again depending where you start from and where
in Malibu you want to go
  • How can I take a road trip along route 66?|137467

I_m planning to visit the USA soon, and would like to take that legendary road trip. Do you know of any companies that provide such tours?

  • Hi I drive Route 66 all the time in fact I just got back from a trip over the weekend. The best way to explore the Route is to rent a car and take your time driving it. Of course if you do this you will want to check out some maps and guide books. There are several alignments of Route 66 and there are tons of miles that you can drive on the original road. Most of the tours that you will find for Route 66 are done on motorcycles. Here are a few companies that do tours:
    www.quantrill.com/tours
    astro4.ast.vill.edu/66 C
    www.tourvacationstogo.com
    www.a-ztours.com

I would also recommend contacting each states Route 66 Assc. They know the people that live and work on the Route and might know about tours, they also know about rallies and other things! They are very helpful! Here are a few additional sites that I use when planning a trip down 66

This website has the BEST directions! You can print them for free gives you turn by turn also gives you all the alignment choices. I have used these directions to get me east to west and west to east been using them for years! Also helpful because they list ALL the towns on the route so it makes researching them easier:
    www.historic66.com
    www.national66.com
    www.route66.org
    www.oklahomaroute66.com
    www.missouri66.org
    www.bygonebyways.com
    www.route66university.com
    www.theroadwanderer.net/route66.htm
    www.azrt66.com

There are just sooo many cool things to see on Route 66! Be sure to stay at the Blue Swallow and the Wigwams they are way cool! You will also pass by the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest which is really neat. Of course there is the Grand Canyon. OK has some of the best parts of Route 66 they have some really old parts.

I answered a question last week that asked about all the places you remember on Route 66 and some of your favorite things on the route here is a copy of my answer because, it has some of the really great spots and I did not have the time to re-type them:
I dont even know where to start. Okay well first lets start with IL. There is a ton of good places to eat. There is Lou Mitchells in Chicago, Dell Rays Chicken Basket in Willowbrook. There is also the Cozy Dog Drive In in Springfield IL. The Polk A Dot drive in which is in Atlanta, Scotys in Hamel best Horseshoe on the Route! There is also DeKamp Junction which is cool Al Capone and his guys robbed the place. As for places to see in IL the Atlanta has a great Route 66 Park, there is also the Hall of Fame in Pontiac which is really nice. Henrys Rabbit ranch is a visitors center and museum and yep they have rabbits and lots of them. Very cool place! There was the Pig Hip Museum but on 5/11/07 it burned down. Very sad had been on the Route since the start. Used to be a restaurant. Oh yeah and dont forget about Funks Grove been here before 66 they make real maple Surip and yes that is spelled right. Still family owned today!
Okay MO. My favorite place to stay is the Munger Moss Motel. Very fun! Ted Drews of course has the best custard on the Route located in STL. There is also Route 66 state park which is new pretty nice. Who can forget about Meremac Caverns? You see sings painted on barns for this all over the Route. Very cool place. Also you get to drive through a town called HOOKER, very funny to take pictures of and who could forget a place called that. It is really funny to see the sing for Hooker Cemetery, we had a few questions when we saw this. Right by Hooker is Devils Elbow a very nice drive on the route. There is the Skyline Motel in Springfield MO still looks like it did back in the day. The people who work there are really nice. Oh Yeah and Fantastic Caverns is there, a drive through cave how cool is that. The drive through Animal Park used to be there. That was always fun you got to fee all kinds of things from your car. They sold it last Oct, now it is being turned into condos I think. In Carthage there is a very cool drive in theater that is still working. Very fun to go to. The Castle Court in Joplin is also a nice place to stay at.
Moving on to OK. OK has some of the best parts of Route 66 all over you will find one lane roads, parts of the old brick road and more. I love going to the Blue Whale and the Worlds Largest Totem Pole. Dont get more touristy than that! There is also Yukon which has a Route 66 Museum, also home to Garth Brooks as the let you know when you pull into town. The Metro Diner in Tulsa is great and Elvis ate there! They have some of the best food around! The Rock Caf is also a great place to eat at, I believe the girl that owns it was used as a character in the movie Cars. In Clinton there is a really nice Route 66 Museum try to go to it each time I drive the Route. The Lincoln motel in Chandler has been there forever and it is a great place to stay. The round bar is crazy it is located in Arcadia, across from it is some restaurant and motel called Hillbilly something. They were closed when we went so we just visited the Barn. El Reno has a Route 66 Museum that is connected to the town museum and it is just cool! Huge fun and we spent hours there! Elk City is home the National Route 66 Museum a must stop for all Route 66 Travelers! Love the place!
Texas has the smallest part of Route 66 so I have never stayed there but, the Shamrock Restaurant in Shamrock has a killer chicken fried steak! You also must go to Amarillo, not only is the Big Texan Steak House home of the 72 oz steak there but also Cadillac Ranch. Wow you get to spray paint on these cars, 10 caddys nose in the dirt sticking straight up! I have never seen anything like this, we had a great time here! One on my favorite places to eat is the Adrian Caf in Adrian this is the Midpoint of the route. They have the best everything here, get some pie! They also are very nice and answered all of my questions, and told us their stories of the route. Wonderful place!!!! Glenrio was this wonderful little ghost town on the border, we got some really cool pictures here. The old buildings are very neat to see.
NM is cool because if you do your research you can drive parts of Route 66 that are still unpaved. It did not start out being a paved highway that was added latter and here you can find old pieces of the road. The other cool thing that I remember as we were driving these parts in some places you could still see marks from the wagon trains and big ruts on the side of the road that were made by them. You will find yourself alone for hours just like it used to be. Okay there are a couple cool places to stay in NM. My favorite has to be the Blue Swallow. This place is still awesome! The blue neon will knock your socks off. It has been restored and you still even have your own little garage now that is cool! I will never forget this place. There is also the El Rancho Hotel very famous the old movie stars used to stay here and all the rooms are now named after a star. Located in the heart of downtown they also have a really good restaurant in the place. Tee Pee Curios is also in NM an old store still fun to go into! Gallup has the best shopping around and is home to the Native American Nations. They are always having a Pow Wow or something here. They also have the best shopping for Native American jewelry around! I also like Gallup because the El Rancho Kitchen wonderful eats! You also get to see the Continental Divide which runs on the boarder of NM and AR, something you will never forget.
AZ is also a great state for 66 they really have done their best to preserve it and the coolest part of driving Route 66 can be found here. I love the drive to Oatman which was a ghost town but they are bringing it back to life. The drive is very twisty and turny and there is nothing to keep you from falling off the side of the mountain this part of the road is one of the most photographed on Route 66 and is not for the faint of heart. With that said I just love to drive this part! My favorite place to Stay in AZ has got to be at the Wigwams, now how cool is that to sleep in a Tee Pee okay so they are not really but, you do get your own little wigwam made of concrete. Been here forever and still family owned, old and young love to stay here. I make it a must each trip! There is also the Museum club in Flagstaff been on the route forever, nice bar good music. The Petrified Forest, Painted Desert and The Meteor Crater are all breath taking. Well worth the time to see them. Glad I did. Seligman this whole small town is Route 66 Crazy! I love going to the Snow Cap, great food and a ton of stuff showing the pride of Route 66. This place is just hard to describe, they have old cars, signs and all kinds of things! The Route 66 motel is also a very nice place to stay here. Now the funniest part of Seligman has got to be the Roadkill Caf, um yep that is what it is called and that is why I remember it! Oh yeah I almost forgot that I stood on the Corner of Winslow AR just like the song! Um it is a nice site to see, dont know if I would call it lovely.
CA you get to drive through the Joshua Trees and that is really cool. You dont even have to go to the park they are right outside of your window. Barstow is one of my favorite stops, sorry not because Route 66 runs through it but, this is the first In-N-Out Burger on the Route. If you have never had it I cannot even tell you how wonderful In-N-Out is! A California must the best fast food around, fresh really no freezers or microwaves, made to order simple yummy goodness! Victorville also has another good Route 66 Museum. I really liked it. The Santa Monica Pier is where Route 66 ends, although this was not true back in the day. Still the pier is fun and there is some great food, games and fun. Love ending the trip there. There really is just a ton of cool things to see on the CA drive, you go through LA, and Hollywood. There are a ton of old builds and wonderful restaurants.
Every time I drive Route 66 I see something new, and every time I make a new memory. There is just too much that I could list here! I have already gone on enough. In fact I will be driving parts of it this weekend. Route 66 is always fun and is a huge part of my favorite travel memories. I hope this helps.

I hope this helps you, be sure to give yourself a lot of time the Route has surprises all along the way!!!!!!! You will meet the best people ever traveling Route 66! Have fun getting your kicks!

  • Get in a car, and drive it yourself. That way, you can take a break, take a piss on the highway... take some mescaline... whatever... right, homey?

More than two thousand miles all the way.
Get your kicks on route sixty-six.

Now you go through saint looey
    Joplin, missouri,
And oklahoma city is mighty pretty.
    You see amarillo,
    Gallup, new mexico,
    Flagstaff, arizona.
    Dont forget winona,
    Kingman, barstow, san bernadino.

well maybe you can forget san bernadino

  • Go online and access Rand-McNally. There_s no tours that go through anymore, the highway itself isn_t the main thoroughfare anymore, either. You have to get off the road to get onto Route 66.

  • Start googling for Route 66. Don_t know of any tour companies that take you through all the way on the old road, but you can rent a car _ follow most of it. Memory serves me that there may be either maps or brochures you can get to help you follow it, whether you start in Chicago or Los Angeles or anywhere in between.

It is no longer designated a official highway, but there are plenty of signs for it. Just follow I55, I44, I40, _ I15 (reverse it for starting in CA). In some areas, you will stay on the interstate, but it others it will be a scenic route, going through towns. Many areas, like CA, east of Barstow, haven_t kept the old road up, as needed, so it can get a little rough at times. Good luck!!

Where is a good area in Philadelphia for a young graduate student to move to?|134205

I was just accepted last minute to a graduate program in Philadelphia. I_ll be re-locating from NYC to the Philadelphia area and am looking for some good areas for a 23 year old single female to move to. I would prefer somewhere with lots of other young adults/college grads. What_s my best bet?

    Any suggestions?

  • rittenhouse square is good. having lived in powelton village it is not the BEST area but is by far not the worst. i like queen village and brewerytown is an up and coming neighborhood. overbrook and wynfield heights are nice calm areas close to st. joes. manayunk and roxborough have an active nightlife and close to public transportation.

  • University City, Powelton Village, or Rittenhouse Square West.
  • Stuff to do in Arizona during the Summer?|133138

We are planning to go to Arizona this upcoming summer and we need some ideas of places to check out. We are up for almost anything. We aren_t big into night life, wineries, or art galleries. We do plan to go to the Grand Canyon of course, so any information about stuff around there that is interesting and worth checking out would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch for any input.

  • Arizona summers are in the triple digits............115 degrees is NOT uncommon............

Visit travel sites, I recommend, about.com/phoenix

depending upon your own interests, there is much to do other than the canyon. We have deserts, motorcycle rallys, bike races, state fairs, arts and crafts, farmer_s markets and a slew of _local_ bazzars.

On I-17, between Phoenix and Flagstaff, lies the sweetest little log cabin that I have ever seen. Even though it has been 4 years or more, since I have seen it, I can not get it out of my mind.

Gordon Lightfoot sang about the _Carefree Hiway_ and the _Eagles about _ Winslow_......both in Arizona. Both are REAL places. Arizona is the home of the nations largest copper mine.

It is not about what and where it is, it is about something that appeals to you.........mountains, hills, vegetation, zoos, races, desert sand, water, casinos and night life, fast food, fine dining..............all of it can be found in Arizona

Basically, I-8 and I-10 are desert.....sandy and dry
    I-40 is _northern country_......snow, hills, sking.....hunting

Though I am not a _ native_, I have come to see that Arizona is a verstaile place, and you are most likely to find what you seek.

I personally live in the Phoenix suburbs between Mesa and Apache Junction, if I can help guide you or assist with your lodging.......please let me know.

  • Summer is the off-season for tourism in Phoenix because it is so hot. In Phoenix do your indoor things like shopping, see a Diamondback_s game or go shopping.

Lake Havasu is nice, but it_s just as hot, if not hotter. There_s OK Coral in Tombstone (Wyatt Earp shootout place) and the mountains in the East and North are beautiful and a bit cooler than the Sun Valley. Prescott and Sedona are cooler and very, very nice places - maybe stop and spend a day or two at each on your way to the Grand Canyon.

  • Tempe is the college town. There are plenty of interesting bars, bands and boobs(although fake). During the summer, your best bet is to do stuff at night or evening. Although it can still be 100+ at night ( all the freaking concrete). We have rerouted the salt river through tempe, now called Tempe Town Lake. Where you can rent horses or a boat. Nifty parks too. The Edge Fest is pretty sweet.

For the most part. It hot. Really freaking hot. So stay indoors. We have Big Surf and Water World parks as well as several Indoor Ice things.

Although the cooking an egg on the sidewalk is pretty fun. And if you want a quick meal. Put a frozen dinner on the dash of your car. It will be done in no time!

  • We went to the grand canyon.(Don_t forget your camera. Not Like you would! lol) Also went to the petrified forest and that was cool. Needless to say it will be hot when you are there. I will say that there is an extreme difference in temperature from Phoenix and Flagstaff. lol I was 12 when I was there so being that was back in the 60_s, that was a long time ago and I am sure that there are more things built up since then. I had a friend take a helicopter ride over the grand canyon and he loved it.

  • Are you going to stop by and see me in CALI??????

I don_t know what_s cool in AZ.... we are going for Christmas. I_ve never been, so I_ll tell you all about it when we get back.
    Luv ya!!

They all sound fun to me, but I_m a little weird and really have no interest in visiting Arizona.

  • Go to a dude ranch, ride a camel, or some kind of festival like where cowboys are dressed up. I wouldnt walk around the dessert!!!!! Unless you have plenty of water. Thats for sure.

  • Visit Las Vegas, NV.

does it directly from the owners, this weekend might be a bit short notice but the resort might have availability too, although they charge much more per night

  • Did you try googling it?

Also try Craigslist.com and type in timeshare.

I am sure you will find something at both sites.

    :-)

  • I would google _timeshare_
    good luck

  • The name explains it all.

  • Where are nice places to raise a family in California?|145252

I_m considering moving my young family to California. What are some nice places to raise a middle class family there? My ideal place would be mid-sized towns/cities that are culturally diverse and have low crime and are generally nice suburban areas with comfortable sized affordable homes and good schools and jobs. Aesthetic views are a plus. Anyone have any ideas?

  • what is_ Aesthetic views _?

go thousands oaks or simi valley in SoCal

move to burlingame or san carlos in NorCal

  • There are a lot of places that are nice to raise a young family and most of California is culturally diverse so no problem there. Since California is a huge state with not a lot of job opportunities I would first worry about finding a job and then look in that region at the different communities. At least that way it would narrow down your options and make advice more useful and manageable.
  • How long does it take to get a package from Hawaii to Minnesota?|150706

I bought something from Hawaii and I have been waiting for it for like 5 days just wondering how long it takes to get here

  • It depends on how and when they shipped it. They may not have shipped it until a few days after you bought it. If they ship it by UPS regular (not two-day special) then it takes about a week. If they shipped it by Priority Mail, then it takes about 4 days. If they shipped it by Parcel Post then it takes 2 to 3 weeks.

I suggest you call the place you bought it from and ask them what date they shipped it, what shipping method they used, and whether they can tell you a tracking number so you can track your package on the shipping company_s website.

Are ther jobs in Atlanta, Georgia and the south east United States since the economy has gone bad?|122619

I was planning on moving to Georgia and I am a teacher, but I have been hearing tales of lay offs and cut backs in education. Is it that way with every job?

  • In Fulton County (the county Atlanta is in), the school board has decided to lay off all part time teachers and most all assistants. That was their decision after considering firing all school nurses. It_s unbelievable.
You_ll have much better luck in neighboring counties such as Forsyth, Gwinnett, Cherokee, and Cobb. They have a lower cost of living than North Fulton and are very safe as well. The schools there are of a very good quality, and I_m sure you_ll be satisfied with the respect that the schools in those counties give.
Clayton County has lost its accreditation in the past year, I wouldn_t recommend that area to you.
As a teacher, you have the biggest impact on kids_ lives than anyone else. They spend more time at school with teachers than they do with parents. You_re bringing up our future and I respect and admire you for that. It_s not something to be taken lightly.
But do check the schools in the other counties that I mentioned. They_re sure to satisfy.

  • That is true, the state is cutting back on the pay teachers currently get. Fayette County has angered alot of teachers they are already making less than most of Atlanta and now the County _ State have decided to cut their pay and their benefits. They_ve been having job fairs for teacher, so there are probably openings, you will have to pass their testing, as well as have the appropriate teaching degree - so you might be able to get a job here in Atlanta, but it might be worth to stay where you currently are because you might be making alot less here in Georgia. I know I_ve seen job fairs for Gwinnett County and for the Atlanta Public School System. It might also be worth looking at Cobb County.

Currently, Atlanta has a higher unemployment rate than the national average. It is currently 8.4%, the national average is about 7.5%. The economy is doing very badly here in Georgia, problems in the department of transportation, they are cutting back on everything government run, most only work 4 day work weeks, they_ve also cut back on how much police can work, they_ve closed several fire stations as well as furloughed some and crime is back on the rise.

  • Teaching in public school is probably the safest job in regards to the economy in Georgia. There has always been a high demand in certain areas of Georgia for teachers, and there will always be that demand. In the financial district of Atlanta, the economy has wrecked jobs and work...but since you_re a teacher, you will be fine. Go to teachgeorgia.org to see all the openings, jobfairs, etc concerning employment. FYI, Cobb and Gwinnett pay the best....but there is probably a bigger need for teachers in the Atlanta City district.

  • Well, I live in TN and have been to GA alot and I love it there but I have heard that the unemployment rate there is climbing and above the national average. Here in TN it is also pretty much the same depending on what county you live in. I would say overall that the job market here in the south is not so good right now whereas where i am from up in the NorthEast, things seem to be alot better right now which jobs and pay scale.

  • Where is the best place to go camping in South Carolina?|132650

I am looking for a place that offers both tent and camper lots. Also somewhere with good clean hiking trails and scenery would be a plus. I am a novice so something simple to start would be nice.

  • Table Rock. It_s a little bit of a steep hike, but very much worth the effort. It_s located about 30 miles west of Greenville.

    Check out this website:
    http://hikingthecarolinas.com/table_rock(sc).php

  • We have it all here in SC....beaches, lakes and mountains.

Since you want hiking try the Greenville area.
  • How to get from London to Toms River New Jersey, and how long it takes?|171311

I want to fly from London - what airport should I go to? How do I get from there to Toms River? How long should I allow for the airport to Toms River journey?

  • London England? the flight would be between 7.5 and 12.5 hours. it will cost about $700 round trip. (sorry i don_t know pounds) Aer Lingus and bmi both fly and would land at either PHL or JFK. PHL be closer of the to Toms River. it would be and 1:45 to drive or if you take mass transit closer to 3:30. your could fly out of either LHR or LGW.
    hope the helps:)
  • Is it safe for an immigrant to fly from boston to california on an airplane ?|120131

My friend has a boy friend that is an immigrant and is not legal in the U.S. and they want to come to cali to visit. Is it safe for him to fly on a plane without any problem or immigration checking on him?

  • To get on a flight within the US, you need to go through a TSA agent who scrutinizes all i.d. Your friend_s friend might get questioned at this point.

  • Probably not, and definitely not if his ID is an American-issued one, such as a driver_s license.

  • Depends. They will definitely check his ID several times. I would not take the chance if he is illegal.

  • How long should a international letter take?|144848

I am using airmail for my letter from australia to U.S.A and it has not arrived. I sent it on the 21 december

  • I would give at least three weeks. If it does not show up in six it is either gone for good or it was sent to the wrong country and could be another month.
  • Where can I find discounted passes to Chicago attractions, other than Citypass?|116868

We live in the far north suburbs of Chicago, and I_d like to take my family to Chicago about once a week this summer to the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, etc. I_d get a Citypass but it expires within a week or so after you buy it. Is there anything similar to Citypass, that gives you discounted admission to each attraction once, but expires a couple months later?

  • If you have a Chicago library card you can check out a Kraft Museum Passport for free. Call ahead to see which ones they have (although they can_t hold them for you). It_s kind of a crapshoot.

The other option is GoChicagoCard, but that doesn_t really work for your situation either. With that one, you purchase the number of days you want to use it for (1, 2, 3, 5, or 7) and can get into many more attractions for free, but the days have to be used consecutively.

So, the short answer is no. But, Adler and Shedd are free the week of June 17 - 22, and the Field has discounted admission. The Art Institute is free on Thursday evenings year round, as is the Chicago Children_s Museum. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is free on Thursdays, and it_s by the free Lincoln Park Zoo.

The Chicago Cultural Center is always free, as is the City Museum in Water Tower.

  • Most Chicago attractions have a free day. I know the two musuems you mention do. The art institute also offers free admission one day a week.

Check the websites for the museums, it should be mentioned there.

  • I don_t really know if it is going to be right for you but there is a new pass out there called Explorer Pass. It could be right up your alley. Looks like they are about to launch a card in Chicago. Seems to be good for 30 days. However, I just looked at their website and they are not selling yet, at least in Chicago. You might check back in a week to see what is included. http://www.explorerpass.com/chicago/index.html

In Washington State where can you go to see small unsigned bands preform?|131366

My step-sister and I just want to go to where you can watch unsigned bands preform. It_s sort of like the Attic in Centerville, Ohio if any of you have been there. Where teens don_t have to pay alot to get in and experience new bands.

  • Just about every bar in Seattle. If you_re underage many venues have all ages shows. They just section off the bar area and only those that are 21 and older with ID can go up there. There_s tons of clubs in Seattle. Good ones for local bands include El Corazon, The Central, Doc Maynards, The Fenix Underground. Go to
    http://www.thestranger.com
    to look at schedules.

Never heard of the Attic and I don_t have any desire to go to Ohio. Too many Midwesterners!
  • Is it possible to change an amtrak ticket i bought with my student advantage discount?|129276

i bought a train ticket 3 days in advance and got the 15% discount. the problem is it_s for tomorrow and i wanted to leave later than i had anticipated. is it possible to change my ticket? do i just pay the difference if i do that?

  • Yes, tickets purchased with the Student Advantage discount are still eligible for exchange. And yes, if the train you_re changing it to is more expensive (prices typically rise as you get closer to the departure date), you_ll have to pay the difference.

  • The only way to find that out is to call AMtrak...no one here is going to know their policies on that...and you would still need to call them anyway. (1-800-872-7245)
  • What is the closest and cheapest hotel near Lackland Air Force Base?|164891

I_m going to see my husband graduate from Air Force Basic Training in a couple weeks. I would like to know which hotel/inn is the cheapest and closest to Lackland Air Force Base.

  • Go to bookme.com

  • We we_re just there to see my big brother graduate in december. I_m pretty sure the cheapest hotel we found was really close, I can_t remember the name but if you go to the AF website there are links on there for basic training graduation and there_s stuff about graduation and different hotels you can choose from that are close.

  • go to BookMe. You can compare prices on all the major travel sites from one location. It_s the only way you can guarantee the best deals for the best hotels for your money online.
  • How hard is it to get around Chicago with luggage?|116470

I_m looking to get from the Amtrak station to O-Hare and I have about 3 hours from when the train arrives to when the plane leaves. Is the regular train system an option when you have luggage? Does anyone have suggestions for how to pull this off?

  • Uhm, all of the CTA trains are running just fine, none of them are shut down at all. Some of the stations downtown and on the north side are being renovated so yeah, there are some slow sections but that doesn_t mean you should avoid them.

Look at it this way, it takes 45 minutes flat to get from downtown to O_Hare on the blue line, and it will cost you $2. You can walk from Union Station (where Amtrak drops off) to the Clinton blue line stop:
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d_hl=en_ge
The trains run about every ten minutes, so you won_t have to wait long for one to show up.
    OR
You can take a cab from Union Station to O_Hare which will take 45 minutes to an hour (maybe more depending on traffic/weather), and that will cost you about $40. You would be seriously wasting your money if you rented a car.
And don_t worry about your luggage, though the O_Hare branch of the blue line does make local stops, people totally expect to have people with luggage on that train at all hours of the day and night.

My advice, take the blue line. It_s $2, and it_s just as fast as driving. Prop your feet up on your luggage, read a book or listen to your iPod and O_Hare is the last stop. Besides, people from Chicago will think you_re a tool if you don_t take the public transportation.

  • Either rent a car Or take a taxicab from the AMTRAK station downtown. The L Trains have been slowed down and one line is completely out of service..Enjoy your stay!

  • I do this all the time when I have to fly out of O_Hare. Just learn how to pack light. One suit case and a backpack is all you need.

  • If you have more than one bag, I would recommend a cab
