Where is a beach near New Orleans that we could spend the day?|124293

We_re drving down and only have a day to soak up the sun and i wanted to stay farily close to new orleans. Any ideas?

  • not really

Biloxi is the closest but it_s not much of a beach, more like a place to go to gamble.

Dauphin Island is 160 miles or 2 1/2 hours turn right at Mobile.

how about a water park in Baton Rouge?

  • 77 miles- 1 hour and 14 minutes- Gulf Port, MS
90 miles- 1 hour and 23 minutes- Biloxi, MS
106 miles- 2 hours and 28 minutes- Grand Isle, La
188 miles- 3 hours and 10 minutes- Guf Shores, AL

Grand Isle is my personal favorite. The Gulf of Mexico crashes right onto the clean white sand, and there_s rarely anyone else out when I go. Great for surf fishing, also the little run offs that aren_t so choppy are awesome for regular ol_ fishing pole fishing. Its great for laying out and catching some peaceful warm rays.

New Orleans is surrounded by a lake (Lake Ponchitrain) and a river (The Mississippi). Neither off _beach like_ shores. The Miss. is more of an industrial marine travel way and the Lake, well, in 2007 I caught a 15 pound sting ray, a four foot bull shark, and a four foot alligator gar out of Lake Ponchitrain where Bally_s Casino used to be at the Belle of Orleans at the Levee (by that little air port). So I wouldn_t go swimming in there if I were you.

    Good luck.

  • The other answers are correct and you have to drive a long way from New Orleans to find a nice beach. The Alabama coast (about 3 hours drive) is the closest source of white sand _ clear water. New Orleans is on Lake Pontchartrain, but the _lake_ is actually a bay with a mud bottom and and the water is silty + brackish.

If swimming isn_t essential and you just want to sun-bathe, you can go to the lakefront, which is a very nice miles-long linear park. Commercial development is prohibited in the lakefront park, but there are numerous shelters (open-air but with bathrooms _ picnic tables) scattered along its length.

You can reserve a shelter by calling the Orleans Levee District (a government agency): Tel. 504-286-3100

To get to the lakefront park from downtown, either take Elysian Fields Avenue to the lake and turn left, or take I-10 West to the West End exit, take West End Blvd. to the lake and turn right.

The first shelter (actually Shelter # 1) is about 100 yards to the right (from West End Blvd) after you reach the lake.

There are also several restaurants in the West End area, such as Russell_s Marina Grill (great food) and Landry_s (OK food, great view).

  • You could go to Grand Isle Louisiana. Probably under two hrs. to get there. Its a small island off the La. coast. Nothing like beaches in the other states. But, its holds a special place in most of our hearts down here. I_d rather be there than on the white beaches of Florida!

It in Jefferson Parish. If you need any more info, or directions, I_d be happy to help you out. Just email me.

  • grand isle is about as close as you can get and stay in state.
it_s only about 2 hours from NO and if you_d like directions you can email me

  • uhh there are no beaches in new orleans but the closest on would have to be biloxi. the only theing that new orelans have tht is close to the beach is the lake but if u dont wanna go there then go to biloxi

  • No beach, but you can go to the Lakefront area. Lake Pontratrain.

  • My wife and I are planning an anniversary trip to New York. Any suggestions on where to stay/what to do?|194873

Looking for nice but not expensive hotel in the city. We know we want to catch a Broadway show and see some sights but other than that no idea. We have never been to New York so any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Oh my, you are in for the time of your life. I don_t know what you consider expensive but we always stay at the Sheraton Manhattan at Times Square, which runs about $300 a night depending on the season. That_s not expensive for NYC and it_s so convenient that you can walk to most attractions and save on transportation costs. You can easily walk to Times Square, Central Park, Broadway (get 1/2 price tickets at TKTS at Broadway _ 47th), Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center,
St Patrick_s Cathedral, Grand Central Station, Columbus Circle.
Be sure to visit St Paul_s Chapel across the street from the World Trade Center site, at Broadway and Fulton St - - the Chapel became a memorial to the 9/11 victims, and is also where George Washington worshiped.
If you like Italian food, Carmines in Times Square is delicious and portions really are big enough to share. Ellen_s Stardust Diner on Broadway between 50th _ 51st where the waitstaff are all aspiring performers, _ sing as they serve, is really fun. Don_t miss Juniors for the Famous Cheesecake, but honestly the meals are fair at best.
Enjoy your visit and Happy Anniversary

  • Everyone has different ideas of what _expensive_ means, you_ll have to elaborate.

I highly suggest you pick up a guide book and flag things that sound interesting to you. That_s what I do before I go on a trip. You might also want to check out the NYC forums on tripadvisor.com. The posters there are quite knowledgeable.

NY has something for everyone. There are tons of museums, shops, historical sites, restaurants, clubs, theatres ... It all depends on what sort of vacation you_d like to have.
  • Are people allowed to go down to the beach (sand) during the Huntington Beach grunion run?|157420

I just want to go on the sand and watch. I don_t want to catch them though.

  • Of course you can.

  • I did this a while back so yes you can go to the sand and watch but if you try to catch without the proper license they will give you a ticket. From what I saw they are very serious about this. The only thing is which I didn_t know until they told us was that if the grunions see people they will move on and land on the sand somewhere further away. They send out spotters to make sure the coast is clear and when it is that_s when they wash up in the sand so I recommend you go with a few people that are there to just watch with no flashlight because that will also spook them away.

Besides poor things...the only reason why they wash up on the sand is to mate....and I_ve never heard of any creature that likes being disturbed while they_re trying to get there groove on right?

But it is cool to see :)

  • People go out on the sand to catch them so I dont see why you couldnt go there just to watch.

  • Yes you may. That is where the grunion are.

  • I guess so...I thought it was more up toward San Pedro and Long Beach....

  • sure it is fun to go in the water when they are running and perfectly legal
  • Are there any good stripper exercise classes in Houston?|183309

A friend and I think it would be fun to take a stripper class, but they are nearly $400 here in Houston (You have to buy them in packages). Does anyone know of a place or a person that offers affordable lessons. We want to let our inner sexy divas out!

  • Try these, God you people get uptight when someone mentions the word stripper--you do realize you do live in Houston dont you?

This one I think is the best:

  • Don_t know about your area but if you have cable on demand they have it on there as erotic dancing :)

  • Sheila Kelly_s S Factor

  • Well there is Treasures, Memories, Hottyz....uhh nevermind. You were asking about stripper exercise classes, not where strippers exercise. Sorry.

  • here_s a better idea why don_t you go for a respectable profession where people will like you for who you are instead of what you look like? you want to make something of yourself by being a stripper? that road only leads to misery and despair.
