What is the best place in Hawaii that can fit my standards?|168102

My family and I have been thinking of moving to Hawaii.(Any island will do.) We are looking for a city that is big, but not too big(like above 100,000), and will not be racist against mainlanders. We also need a middle/ high school with high education, (My Family is smart.) and needs to have a big amount of students, and big sports teams. (Mainly Football and basketball.) So, which city would fit my standards? Or if does not exist, which city is closet to my standards?

  • I agree with Shine...why do you want to move to Hawaii? Have you been there? It really doesn_t seem like it would agree well with you.

There really isn_t a big (but not too big) city. Honolulu_s population is about 400,000. The next most populated city, Hilo, rings in at 40,000. There_s a fantastic boarding school on The Big Island (home of Hilo) called Hawaii Preparatory Academy, but it_s quite a ways from Hilo.

Big sports team? Have you seen the NBA team Honolulu Honus? NFL_s Lahaina Monk Seals? Didn_t think so. What exactly are you looking for, here?

  • If you like the city life, I have no idea why you would want to move to Hawaii, but Honolulu is your closest bet.
PS. People in Hawaii are not _racist_. When you get here we kindly ask that you do not try to impose your _standards_ upon us, and treat our _aina and people with respect.
    Mahalo

  • Honolulu would be your best choice. Its the city.
As far as racist, theres no need to be worried. Hawaii_s a melting pot of cultures, just don_t be ignorant.
Well you could always enroll your kids in private school here, there academically challenging.

  • over 1 million people in Oahu alone....substandard schooling. if you are really smart as you say you are, dont move to hawaii

  • you will have to LOWER your standards to live in Hawaii.....better viewed from afar.
  • What are the best things to do with kids around the Smithsonian?|142213

We are probably going to start at the Museum of Natural History. My girls are preschool age and I think they will like the dinosaur bones. We may go to the Air and Space museum as well, but are there any other highlights/must see things to do around the Smithsonian for young children? Thanks!

  • Several of the museums have special areas for kids - it is a good idea to check them out. In specific, the National Museum of Natural History has discover stations - and a lot of stuff that makes sense on a Children_s level.

Air and Space is good, too, but geared to an older crowd - so take it easy. The Planetarium and IMAX movies might be good, but also might be frightening. Take them in exhibits where they can see things on their level - the Wright Brothers exhibit comes to mind, as do the air and space halls, rather than ones which are more intellectual (earth to the moon). One of the exhibits, how things fly, is very interactive. And there is a video in the exhibit on the planets where they sing _The Family of the Sun_ to the tune of _the farmer in the Dell_, which is quite amusing.

Of course the National Zoo tends to really resonate with kids, and have lots of stuff for kids to do. Go to metro_s Woodley Park/Zoo exit and walk about 8 blocks uphill. (I understand you can also go to Cleveland park and walk 10 blocks, but downhill.)

Someone already mentioned the carousel - it_s not expensive, so let the kids take a ride, after all, the museums are free (as is the zoo).

There is art to see for kids, too. Between the National Gallery of Art, the National Museum of Natural History and the Archives is the Smithsonian_s Sculpture garden. This is a beautiful garden which has some whimsical sculpture which your kids will like. Make sure to check out _the thinker_, not the one you thought of, but a bunny in the same pose, the Roy Lichtenstein house and the chairs. But also look at Calder_s Cheval Rouge, which is there, and let the kids experience a great piece.

And the Postal Museum, off the mall, also has stuff for kids. Good news is that it is also right next door to Union Station, in the basement of which you can find a food court with affordable food to fit any taste.

There is a Discovery Theatre at the Smithsonian Institution - if you can get tickets, they have shows for older and younger kids, so check out if they have something running for younger kids.

  • Well, we raised four kids in the DC area, not too terribly long ago, so we have some experience here.

  • There is a carousel on the mall. Also, don_t forget the National Zoo is part of the Smithsonian. It is beautiful and it is free; if you can go early before it_s hot and crowded.

  • the merry-go-round on the mall
bring a kite to fly near the Washington monument
the Natural Museums of History has some great i-max films (some in 3-D which is always cool for kids)

  • If they are pre-school, they will be worn out by the time you even get to the A_SM. That would not be that interesting to them.
  • What should we do for our honeymoon in Duluth, MN?|132182

My fiance and I are going on our honeymoon to Duluth, MN in July. Neither of us have ever been there. We will be staying in a hotel. We don_t want to do a whole lot of _touristy_ things. We are planning to have a relaxed time.

If you have been to Duluth please let me know what you really enjoyed there.

    Thank you.

  • Well I used to live in Duluth in fact I was born and raised in Proctor Mn which is just up the hill from Duluth, What I would say to do is to take a tour of the north shore of Lake Superior there are lots of bed _ Breakfast places and try not to visit the area during the grandmas marathon as that event causes more traffic congestion in one day then they have in the whole year. Other than that they have no smoking Rules in most places in Duluth-----hope this helps

  • um, it_s a honeymoon.....

inside activities with maybe an occasional visit to the hotel pool or the liquor store

  • yeah rite... buy a tee shirt that says Duluth Mn on it.
  • What should I see on vacation in Philadelphia?|141815

I_ll be there for about a week with my husband and 16 year old son.

  • I_m originally from Philly and I miss it almost everyday. Of course, everyone listed most of the must-see sights. Don_t forget about the art museum! Reading Terminal Market is a cool place to go as well. Just across the river in New Jersey is the aquarium. I also recommend finding time to just walk around the neighborhoods, particularly Rittenhouse Square, Center City, Society Hill, Old City (personal favorite), South Philly/Queens Village. There_s tons of great little art galleries, shops, restaurants, etc everywhere you turn in these neighborhoods. If you happen to come the first of the month, they have First Friday in Old City where between 5 and 9pm all of the art galleries are open to show off their new exhibits. It_s a really cool atmosphere. Make your way down to the waterfront (Penn_s Landing) and/or Boathouse Row on the Schuylkill River. Check out the famous cheesesteaks at Pat_s and Geno_s (they_re across the street from each other). I am personally a Geno_s fan - my friend is all about Pat_s. Make sure you look up how to order correctly! There_s also the Italian Market on 9th that_s a cool thing to check out.

There are endless amounts of restaurants everywhere you turn - some of the more famous ones are the Steven Starr restaurants (my personal favorite is Jones) and I also love the Philadelphia Fish _ Company. The Moshulu is the famous restaurant on a boat in the Delaware River - obviously more expensive but a great experience. Some cool Irish pubs that have great food and even greater atmospheres are The Black Sheep Irish Pub and the Dark Horse Pub. Even now, when I go back and visit, I just love to walk around these neighborhoods and take it all in - to this day, I still always stumble into new places that are complete gems.

Enjoy your time there! Hope this helped!

  • Go to Independence Hall, Go see the Liberty Bell right across the street, go to the Franklin Institute and you_ll have a BLAST!! Also, go to the Constitution Center! They have a really awesome LIVE show with a speaker and it_s just amazing. I live like RIGHT outside of Philly and i never get a chance to go! I love it there and with all the history we have here, it_s just so.....amazing. You should also visit where Ben Franklin_s house used to be and his print shop. You_ll learn a lot and it_s really informational. Also, there_s the Betsy Ross House. lol, i hope i_ve given you a lot of suggestions :)

  • You should definitely tour all the historical places like the Liberty Bell and the Betsy Ross House. Also drive about fifteen minutes out of Philly to Valley Forge (King of Prussia area) and visit things in Philly like the constitution center and museums like the Franklin Institute and the art museum.
