What are some things to check out along the Northern California coast?|160566

My friend and I are going on a weekend trip to Eureka, CA (we live in Sacramento) next weekend. I definitely want to check out the redwoods, obviously. What are some things I want to make sure not to miss while I_m up there?

Thanks.

  • If you went up I-5 to Mt. Shasta City, you could check out Mt. Shasta before taking the beautiful drive from there out to Eureka at the coast. Castle Crags State Park is before Shasta at Dunsmuir, a beautiful place to stroll in, intersected by the Pacific Crest Trail. Across I-5 from the park is the Sacramento River, perfect for dropping in an inflatable raft and paddles, even if you don_t know what you_re doing, for a bit of whitewater fun. Trinity/Claire Engle Lake is on the way out towards the coast. All that region, the Marble Mountains, Scott River, the Trinity Wilderness, is awesome. I love it up there.

  • I want to move to the states from England. i have a carreer in hospitality management, where should i start?|158476

I am 21 years old have been working in the trade since school and am fully qualified. I know entry to the states is competitive and was wondering if there is any call for overseas workers in the hospitality management field.

  • Sorry, not a chance. First, you need a degree to get a work permit for the US. Second, the US has plenty of people out of work who can work in this field.

Your only hope is to work for a firm that operates in both the UK and the US and get a transfer to the US after a few years.
  • What is the cheapest and fastest source of transportation to get from West Covina to San Pedro, CA?|159145

And back. It_s about an hour drive. I have no car and everyone I know is too busy to take me there.

  • yes there is route you can take first take the foothill sliver streak
bus to El Monte station (get a transfer)
then board a metro 577 express bus to Long beach then take
the 577 bus to its last stop at the Long beach transit mall
then board a LADOT 147 bus to San Perdo
you can get ez pass which will be good on all buses for about $80.00
(although you will still have pay a zone fare on the silver street and the 577)

  • Go to
    http://www.metro.net/default.asp,
or call their 800 number and see what they can tell you.

You_re going from one end of the county to the other and it_s a bit of a stretch, but I bet it won_t be as bad as you think.

    Best of luck !!

  • I really don_t think there is any fast way that_s cheap, or cheap way that_s fast.

Take a cab or go on line and check out the metro

  • Cheap and fast are contradictions.

  • Try hitchhiking or use your bike if you have some spare time.
  • Can people recommend good value hotels in Manhattan and must see and do things in NY/surrounding area?|147964

To mark getting on with my life after months spent getting over my wife leaving me, I am packing a rucksack and flying to New York - no pre-booking hotels for me! I am spending 8 days and would love peoples tips and advice, especially on where to stay (not too expensive, but reasonable quality) and what are real must see_s? Am also think about hiring a car and heading to new hampshire for a few days - any tips? Thanks in advance all!

  • The Belvedere Hotel. 48th Street, 8th Ave.
It is across the road from Broadway, If you walk up the little road from the Hotel you end up on Times Sqaure, 10 mins from Central Park. I have stayed there all the times i_ve been to NY and i love the hotel. It is cheap and great for a NY hotel!

    The Hilton Garden Inn
It_s pretty much in the same location as the Belvedere but on the main road. It is also around the same price.

There is a hostel in Manhatten, Not sure where. But here is the link for the website:-

    http://www.bigapplehostel.com/

Places to see! Where do you start?
1.) Go up either the Rockefeller Center Or Empire State!
    Amazing views! Approx $18.00/ $20.00
    2.) A walk around Central Park/ Bike Ride/ Horse + Cart ride.
3.) Visit Ground Zero Museam + The Site. (World Trade Center)
4.) Take a boat trip around the Statue Of Liberty. It goes right up to the Statue so you can get good photos and it slows down then it goes around the sky line of NY + under one of the bridges and turns around, It doesn_t let you get off at the statue, if you want to do that then get the other boat but you are stuck on the island for 45 mins, there is nothing else there (not good if cold + wet) Otherwise get the boat that goes around the Statue.
5.) Visit Times Square at day + night
6.) Go see a show on broadway (maybe)
    7.) Shopping!
8.) Museams? Lots by Central Park.
9.) Take the _Hop On Hop Off Bus__ And do the night tour on there it goes over the Manhatten Bridge to Brooklyn and you can watch the sun set over the skyline- amazing!
You can also just hop on the bus anywhere and it will go around the city (two buses for upper + lower NY) it_s good ticket is vaild for 48 hours cost about $48.00 but it;s worth it for a first time in NY.

There is a grey line bus tour shop on Times Sqaure and you can get free maps, brochers and they have monthly booklets of what is happening in the city that month and other little bits in there.

Good luck with everything and i hope you have a great trip!!

  • Do the hostels - there are bound to be several in the area. If you_re a member of the YHA then you_re a member of Hostelling International, and will get reduced rates, otherwise you just join up and collect tokens for each night you stay to become a member. 8 days isn_t enough, go for at least two weeks!

I wouldn_t bother with a car, just get the bus (there are loads and the service is pretty good, cheap too).

Need any more advice, let me know!

  • GOOD FOR YOU!!!

  • Hi there
Take a look on www.tripadvisor.com.... me and my family have just booked a 3 week travelling trip to America ( new york, boston, washington dc...etc..) and before we booked any hotel (or in some of the places we were staying, B_Bs) we looked on trip advisor...basically people post reviews on hotels, sites and B_Bs around the world...and the amount of places we looked at which were cheap and looked nice which were then given bad reviews on trip advisor was unbelievable!! And we would have booked some of them if it hadn_t been for trip advisor...so it is really useful...and it also gives links to sites that sell rooms quite cheaply...but if u weren_t going to book it then it is useful for seeing the general price depending on the season and if it is a nice place to stay in or not...and most of the reviews give an idea of how close it is to things...so at least if u look at some that are nice b4 u go then u will no that u aren_t walking into a hotel that is a dump...have a look at www.podhotel.com...it was cheap and had good reviews on trip advisor and looked really funky...think is was on E 51st street so don_t no if this is any good but it did seem like a good place to stay...hope this makes sense and hope it is useful...

  • I just stayed at http://www.bblodges.com/ this past weekend for 1 night. It_s on the upper east side near two 6 train subway stops. It_s not central, but near central park and easy to get to a subway. It_s priced well, very clean, and the owners are really nice.

Sites: Met museum, Frick museum, guggenheim museum. Central Park. If it_s nice weather, the Cloisters (part of the Met museum but located on the northern end of Manhattan). If you want to see the statue of liberty but not actually step on the island, you can take the Staten Island ferry for free and it has a good view.

  • hmmm.. usually the hotels in nyc are pretty expensive,, i dont know,, youd have to look around... but you should go to central park and rockefeller center (OMG LIKE AN UNDERGROUND MALL!) there are a lot of museams to go to,,, the museam of natural history, museam of modern art.. just walk randomly on the streets and youll find something lol

NY is wonderful, I went last year and can_t wait to go again!!!
Driving in New York looks to be a nightmare, but maybe that_s just me!
If you want to travel around look at the Greyhound buses, really good and again reasonably priced.

Have a great trip!!!! Can I come??? :-D only joking.
