What area in Chicago is most central to the major attractions?|195809

I will be visiting Chicago with my two children, boys ages 11 and 14. When searching for hotels, I am not familiar with the areas such as the loop, north michigan, etc. We visited once before and stayed on North Michigan, but weren_t in walking distance to any attractions. And we won_t be shopping! But, Navy Pier, Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd_s, etc.

  • The Loop or downtown Chicago. Everything is pretty close there.

  • You_ll want to be downtown, close to Michigan ave, but maybe a little further south than you were before. You might try the international hostel on Congress. I_m not sure about hotels in the area.

The Field Museum, The Shedd, and the Planetarium are all south just off of Roosevelt.

The Museum of Science and Industry is not with in walking distance from any of the other attractions. You_ll have to take either the Metra from Millennium Station to 55th/57th St. or a bus that drops you off in front of the museum.

If something is not in walking distance, Chicago has a good public transportation system. You can purchase day passes to ride the L or the buses all over the city.

A good place to start is the Chicago Cultural Center at Michigan and Randolph. There is a tourist information center there and they will be able to help you with the specifics of how to get where you want to go.

  • The major attractions are spread out a bit - it is possible to walk but some of the walks are long.

If you stay in the central Loop area, you will be reasonably close to North Michigan Avenue shopping, the Art Institute and the Bean. Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum are not too far. There is a hop-on, hop-off trolley that you can take to get to these.

The Museum of Science and Industry is down in Hyde Park, not too far from the University of Chicago. You can take the El or a taxi to get there.

  • I would suggest the Gold Coast or Lincoln Park area after looking at the original question but later you mention 3 sites that are not near each other. The only site close to my suggestion is Navy Pier.

Unfortunately Chicago has several attractions...there are 53 museums alone! They are spread out throughout the city and suburbs.

Check out the Museum Campus area in Grant Park...Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium and Field Museum of Natural History. They are within walking distance of each other...but a fairly long walk to the planetarium. These can be seen in one day although the Field Museum can be a day by itself. By the way, the Oceanarium exhibit in the aquarium is closed for construction until May 22. Check them out online:

This time, why not stay near Millenium Park? It_s part of Grant Park and is an attraction itself with many things to see and experience:

Below are some nearby hotels. Some have museum packages:

This would leave the Museum of Science and Industry. This place is about 6 1/2 miles from the others. There are attractions near there....Obama_s home, Univ of Chicago, Oriental Institute...if your kids are into ancient history.

  • stay in _the loop_ or theater district.
go to hotels.com and type in navy pier for hotels closeby.
take the double decker bus tour. you can hop on and off
    at each stop.

  • Get a room at The Drake.
  • What is the best and the cheapest way to travel from JFk airport in NYC to Newark NJ?|193719

I am searching for a cheap way to travel from JFK airport in NYC to Newark NJ by using public transporattion. please le t me know the best and the cheapest possible way to do so.

  • i agree with Mr Danger, just take the Express Bus. It may cost a bit more but it_s much much easier and faster.

  • The best way to get from JFK to Newark, NJ will be train, not bus like the last post said. Here_s how to get from JFK to Newark.

Step 1: take the Airtrain from the terminal to Jamaica Station. Please listen for the announcement _Station D: Jamaica Station._

Step 2: at Jamaica Station, purchase a $5 MetroCard from the MetroCard Vending Machine, and exit the Airtrain system into Jamaica Station. The $5 will be deducted from the MetroCard, when exiting the Airtrain system.

Step 3: Once thought turnstile (faregate), follow the directional signs to the Long Island Railroad. Purchase you_re LIRR ticket from the ticket machines on the pedestrian bridge overlooking the platform. An off peak ticket from Jamaica Station to Penn Station is $5.75. If you_re arriving on a weekends, you can purchase a CityTicket for $3.50.

Once you purchase your ticket, look at the display board on the pedestrian bridge for the train heading to Penn Station.

Step 4: at Penn Station, exit the LIRR train and follow the directional signs to the NJ Transit Concourse. Purchase a one way ticket from New York City to Newark and take either the Northeast Corridor Line or the North Jersey Coast Line from Penn Station New York to Newark Penn Station. The one way fare is $4.

I hope this information is very helpful.

    Good luck

  • What kind of housing is available in Chicago that works with a 1 yo and 2 small dogs?|194095

I_m looking for something with a small backyard that is in Chicago. Is there any housing that exists like this. What neighborhoods? Where is a good website I can look at real estate?

  • Here_s what I think you_re looking at. If you have a decent amount to spend on rent a month, say around $1,000-$2,000 a month you could afford a pet friendly apartment (I know you said house, I_ll explain later) near the lake _ beaches that would be **large enough** for your family:
    http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/apa/62
(the map links don_t work, here_s the intersection:
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q_hl=en_ge

I found that by including _pet friendly_ in a apartment/housing search on chicago.craigslist.org -
    http://chicago.craigslist.org/search/apa
and that_s right by Montrose Beach in Uptown which is one of the most dog friendly places in the city...Montrose Beach is is probably the only leash free beach in the city.

Finding a house to rent in Chicago anywhere near the choice neighborhoods is very difficult and will be expensive if you find it. There are lots of new town homes, and condos which is basically just like living in an aprtment, and in all of those cases you_re probably 99% going to have to walk your dog off property to a park or open area every time it needs to go out, and this is going to suck when it_s -10 outside in February.

I don_t know exactly what you_re looking for in terms of living in the city, but my me, my wife _ our 5 year old need to live in the city and we tried living in Lincoln Park right down the street from everything including the free zoo...we liked it for a while but for what you pay to live in a neighborhood like that, you don_t get much space for your money. We looked around and found a place on the south/west end of the city, it_s a house with a cobblestone backyard, and an upstairs _ downstairs. We still have access to all of the city buses _ trains _ it_s only a half hour on the train or bus to all of the things we like to do in the city, or maybe 20 minutes if we drive. We pay $900 a month for our place, that_s way less than what we paid in Lincoln Park.

If you have a car you need to think about parking it too. In the nice neighborhoods like Lincoln Park, parking is hard to find as you won_t get a designated spot unless you pay an extra $200 a month for it - and with a one year old, do you want to walk a block or two to your car every time? Basically my single friends are okay with that stuff so they can be near everything, I_m not because I want more space, and I can park in front of my house.

  • Wow that is VERY hard to find in Chicago. If you go to the suberbs then you will find what you want (trust me I live there) If you have to be downtown there are some bigger condos and parks but not a private backyard. Sorry about my answer but good luck! =D

  • I_m going to assume that since you_re looking for a house (and you do mean a HOUSE, right? and not an apartment) with a backyard you have that kind of money. In that case, there are plenty of places to search on the web. I_ve included a few links below:

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified

    http://realestate.yahoo.com/Illinois/Chi

    http://www.chicagohomeestates.com/

    http://www.rubloff.com/

As for WHERE to look, that_s hard to say. Some people will tell you the neighborhoods that are already established with nice shops, etc. But because those neighborhods are already established, they_re also expensive. The best bargains are in neighborhoods that are up and coming but not fully overrun yet. Places where the houses might need a little work but the neighborhood is slowly turning the corner. You_re best bet is to search on the sites above and make a note of ones that look interesting, then come back here and ask about the neighborhood. YOu_ve picked the right time to look for a house, though. It_s a buyers market right now. Good luck.

  • You might be able to find a townhouse with a small patch of grass depending on how much you_re looking to spend and where you_re willing to live. Houses in the city are crazy expensive. You can go to www.erealty.com or www.realtor.com to look at Chicago real estate. I like erealty because you can search by neighborhood but you have to set up a username and stuff so it is kind of a pain. Good luck!
  • How do you save gas money on a long road trip?|109764

We are going from northeast Tennessee to Mobile Al to Austin Tx, possibly through Memphis and back to Tennessee. Please help!!!

  • Make sure your oil/filter is fresh ... that saves on gas (which reminds me, I have to change my oil!), and your tires are properly inflated.

Also, not going too far over the speed limit; but tailing semis is not really a good idea. In order to feel the effects of their draft, you have to drive real close ... to close to be safe.

Here are a couple of sites that have good tips (good for everyday driving, too):

    http://www.edmunds.com/advice/fueleconom

    http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer

  • Do the speed limit and stay behind the semi trucks. The draft helps pull you along and saves a little on the gas!!

  • I found the best way to save gas is to install a hydrogen kit. I got 40-60% better millage on my car when it was installed. I cost me $60 to make. Great report on it with videos here,

  • Which state is best to raise a family and have a good career with a good salary Colorodo,North Carolina,Maine?|182809

I would like to relocate ,but have never been anywhere else beside Georgia. I wanted to know which of these state would be good for raising a family, and which have the best school systems. Also so that i could have a good salary in the area of education, social work or psychology. Include the exact city and state.

  • I live in NC. If you move here, Pinehurst, Raleigh, or Charlotte are the cities for making good money. Whatever you do, don_t move to Robeson County. Crime is almost as horrible as employment rate and school system. Good Luck.
