What are the big differences between living in the southeast and living in Los Angeles CA?|174339

Living in the south is great and Ive never lived anywhere else, I will be moving west within the next year. Im curious about what to expect.

  • It_s VERY expensive.
I am extremely happy to pay $1450 for a 2 bedroom apartment in a nice area.

    It_s congested.
Too many people on too few freeways.

The people are rude and mean.

    The weather never changes.
There is no humidity, so you skin and hair are going to dry up very quickly. Get used to carrying a water bottle with you.

    Everyone is pretty...and fake.
You can get plastic surgery as easily as you can get an apple.

    EXTREMELY diverse!
Unlike the South, it_s not just Black and White here. There are cultures from all over the world who call LA home.

  • I think Joan Didion was paraphrashing Gertrude Stein who first said, _There is no there there!_ She was speaking of Oakland, too.

See my previous answers about LaLaLand.

  • cost of living is cheaper

  • Housing is through the roof! We paid almost three times as much for our house here as we did back home (texas) but the shopping is great. The food is great. The wine is fabulous. The southern hospitality is gone though! All of my new friends call me Mrs. Texas bc they say I am so friendly to everyone. And everyone will listen to what you say bc of your accent so you have to be careful not to offend anyone although everyone is really laid back! Oh, did I mention the shopping?

  • rise in housing prices ...more bmw_s and mercedez and also much better bragging rights. Oh yeah more homeless are visible

  • Summers are not humid in LA, so even if the temperature sometimes gets as hot as in the Southeast, it_s much less oppressive. Also, It doesn_t rain in the summer in LA.

  • I_m a lifetime native of LA. Joan Didian said it best when she wrote _There is no there, there!_ In LA, you drive everywhere. Even if you_re going a block, you take the car, and curse the traffic. LA is smog, freeways, rude people, and noise. You can live in a place for 10 years and never speak with your neighbor. But it is also charming. The sunsets at the Hollywood Bowll on a warm summer night are amazing. Likewise, any type of music, art or festival you like is always happening somewhere nearby. Within 2 hours, you can go from swimming in the ocean to skiing down a hill, which is something everyone should try at least once. But the best part of LA is that _cold_ is anything less than 64 degrees!

  • The oceans/shores/waves are different. Smog is out of control there! The values and morals are different. Everyone is fake in Los Angeles but they_re nice to you, which I_m ok with it. I_m from Pittsburgh and moved to Los Angeles and no one really tells you the truth, everyone has weird motives, etc... but once you get used to it, you_ll be ok. Housing is definitely expensive. It_s not as glamorous as everyone thinks-far from it, actually. HOWEVER- the food and shopping is great, you can_t beat the weather (most of the time), you get to see movie stars at random spots, you get all of the movies before almost anyone else in the country does... I love Los Angeles compared to NYC. I_d move back in a heartbeat if I could. And there are good people there if you search for them!

  • The biggest is probably the time zones. It takes a while to get used to different time zones (where jet lag comes from). Although theirs is a different ocean you will find that the culture is very much the same.

  • In Los Angeles, you can find a really ghetto dangerous area, and drive for 15 minutes into a really affluent, clean, safe area.
LA is so diverse. It_s one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. That_s the big difference you_ll find.

  • It_s great if you_re wealthy or in tha Crips.

  • I have travelled to almost every city in the US including all of the southeast. There are alot more work opportunities in Southern CA. The people here are very self concious and selfish. But its not their fault, its just the system. The better you look the more chances you will have to succeed. Hispanics, corrupt and otherwise, have dominated certain lower end communities while places like Orange County are dominated by racist white consertive powerfuls who have priced out many of the hispanics. Most of the gang activity is in Los Angeles County especially from Long Beach up thru the 105 / 110 freeway corridors. Nevertheless, you_ll never here people say hello or be nice like in the south, unless you_re a total hottie. Most people just keep to themselves and mind thier own business. Good Luck.

  • How do you guys feel about proposal elimation of subway kiosks?|145000

I do not happy about that.
Also, according to Proosal Subway Station change, 81st St-Natural History_s Part-Time Station Customer Assistant kiosk at 79th St exit/entrance will be replace by 24-hour automated access.
I think that is not very great idea because stroller folks going to museum is not happy that service gate is not open and Stroller cannot fit through the HEET.

    What do you think?

  • My friend, this is going to be a major security issue, because what happen if there is a crime happening or fire in the subway occurs (lets hope none of these thing really happen) how you_re going to call. The payphone in the subway are some time out of order and the you can_t get cell service in the underground section of the subway. So if you need help, well you out of luck.

This is another way for the cash strapped MTA of milk every nikkle and dime us, just because they don_t have the money. This should be a lesson for them not to dip their hand into the cookie jar.

    Good luck
  • What time should I get to tix4tonight in Vegas to get the best show tickets?|158293

I got some advice on here that I should go to tix4tonight in Vegas on the day of the show to get cheap tickets to Cirque du Soleil shows. Does anybody know what time I should show up there in the morning to get tickets before they sell out? What time do people usually start lining up? They open at 10 am everyday. And I_ll be there on weekdays during the first week in March, if that makes any difference.

  • If there_s something that you really want to see, and especially any Cirque du Soleil show, get there just before opening, then snap up your tickets as soon as possible. Any available Cirque tickets go fast!

However, if you just want to see any show, for something to do that night. Late afternoon is the time to go. They post slightly deeper discounts closer to show time, but not on every show.

  • If there is a show that you really want to see, show up at 9:30 when they post the day_s listings and see if your show is one of them for sale that day. If so, stay in line. Cirque tickets tend to go quickly. But there is a chance that they won_t have any tickets for the show you want to see. If it_s something that you really want to make sure you can catch, it_s best to buy the tickets in advance. But Tix4Tonight is fantastic if you_re open to seeing any show.

  • Whatever you do don_t see Believe by Criss Angel and Cirque du Soleil. I saw it on Saturday at 9:30pm and it was horrible and boring. My friends and I went to tix4tonight at around 12pm that same day, there was a small line but we still were able to buy 7 tickets. The Luxor was not packed there is always seating because they have more than 1 show a night.

  • They actually open at 11am but the shows for the day are posted at 9:30am. My advise is to get there at 9:30 and if your shows are on the list, stand in line right away. There are no guarantees Cirque du Soleil show tickets will be on sale but there is no way to find out until that morning.
  • Whats a good way to spend a personal day in or around the San Francisco Bay Area?|157602

I have some free time on my hands, I live in the East Bay, and I_d like to make a solo day trip. What are my options?

  • Dear Nate:

I always enjoyed a Golden Gate Ferry Boat
    Ride to Sausalito or Tiburon!

I think there is still a Ferry Boat at Jack London
Square? If NOT, drive to Pier 1 _ catch the
Ferry there. I spent many a reflective time
on the Bay, sailing to lunch it in Marin.

I also had Great Personal Days at Stow Lake
in Golden Gate Park by the Tea Garden.
I would walk or rent a electric Boat _ sail
    around that Island.

    Have FUN!

  • Go to Fisherman_s Wharf, Pier 39, Alcatraz, ride a cable car, go to a day spa, visit Chinatown, the Golden Gate Park (Japanese Tea Gardens are lovely), visit China Beach for great photo opportunities of the Golden Gate Bridge, visit Muir Woods which is very scenic and peaceful.
  • What food is Utah famous or best known for?|155512

This is for a project in school and i can_t really find any good answers!!! Thanx for the help!

  • I live in Utah, the fry sauce answer is correct, it can really only be found here, and yes, jello, especially the green jello, other than that, peaches...

  • Mormons. I don_t know what they eat, though.

  • National Parks, Mormons, and a dirty salt lake. The National Parks and scenery are some of the most beautiful on the planet.

  • Mormon food lol j/k

Honey it_s known as the beehive state

  • They are most famous, food wise, as the number one per capita consumers of Jello in the world. The state is predominately Mormon, and very large families are encouraged by the church. With large families come large family gatherings and church functions, and Jello is a staple food at these type of events.

  • Fry sauce is the one thing that you find everywhere in Utah and no one anywhere else even knows what you_re talking about. It is amazing!! Catsup/Mayo, equal parts - mix it up, much better than catsup alone.

Lemon wedge with diet Coke. I_ve seen people in other states do this in the past few years but Utahan_s were doing it long before anyone else.

There are a lot more caffeine free soda_s than I_ve ever seen anywhere else.

Jello, I guess. I don_t know who_s eating it all but I have heard that Utah and Iowa eat more jello than anywhere else.

I have a recipe for Funeral Potatoes that_s been served at every church dinner ever (including funerals, which is where the name comes from).

  • Bees/honey

    Mormonism

  • i think : Chicken Pot Pie, Raisin Muffins, or Leprechaun Pie.

  • It_s known for it_s thick shakes, and great breakfast foods such as omelets and pancakes.

  • Fry Sauce. It_s a mix between ketchup and mayonnaise with a lot of different variations.
  • What is the best place to live in Metro Atlanta?|111287

I would be moving there pretty soon, what is the best place to live in Atlanta, I like the area that has a great quality of life, good school, has lots of stores, have great shopping mall, nice neighborhood, and parks. I don_t mind the commute.

  • I don_t know what the first answerer is talking about...

First of all there is crime is any huge metropolitan city.

There are some great places to live in the metro area. Some places that you should check out is:

    Buckhead
    Alpharetta
    Lawrenceville
    Holly Springs

  • You say you don_t mind the commute, but you_d want to see the place at 8:45 on a weekday morning! I would suggest living in town. Grant Park has some lovely historic houses, but I didn_t go to school there. Its on the edge of the quirky hip district (East Atlanta), has a park with a zoo and lovely neighbors. I lived there for a while and loved it! The mall is a bit of a drive, but no more than like 20 min to Lennox.

Gas isn_t getting much cheaper and 10 hours a week is a lot to spend in the car!

    Good luck!

  • lol good luck on that one! there is no way that you can get away from crime. but it does seem to dumb down around here. But as it dumbs down so does my interest in living in the place because of lack of malls and stuff like that. lol but i guess any place in the metro is better than the real ATL.

  • Gwinnett County is good, if you go to the right spots. Lawrenceville and Suwanee are about the only nice spots left! But it_s about 30 minutes from the city, and it_s close enough that you don_t feel like your living in the boondocks.

  • I also agree with lucy b,you can also check out stock ridge, tucker, and forest park all seem pretty good to me

  • plan on spending at least 2-3 hours a day in the car if you want to commute.

    norcross is nice.

  • North Suburbs like anywhere from Chattanooga to Buckhead.

  • Douglas County is pretty good

  • Buckhead!
  • About how much money would I need to take to New York City for a weekend?|156933

I am going to NYC for my birthday on August 13 thru August 17 and Im turning 20! Its my first time going and im staying with a friend...I want to know how much money I would need to eat, shop (and not the fake sh*t either), play with, probably to get around (like a taxi and what not), and just any other stuff! Please help and thanks for the advise!

  • I go to NYC all the time, so I would say at least $600. You HAVE to see a broadway show, which, at TKTS in Time Square you can get tickets for about 50 to 100 bucks, or else buy full price for about $200 depending on the show. Taxis are about 5 dollars a fare for long distances, so I really recommend you take the subway or walk, so about fifty for travel fares. NYC has amazing restaurants, but none of them are the least bit inexpensive, so you might want $200 for dining. And the hotels are normal, so probably about $350 to $400 for 4 nights in a hotel that doesn_t include breakfast (most of them don_t). Then some money for new clothes, the stores are like anywhere else, unless you do buy the _fake sh*t_ then its a lot cheaper. Bring a lot of money if you_re going high end, Barneys makes Bloomindale_s look like a macy_s. And even Macy_s in NYC has expensive stuff. You also want some money for Museums, and not the boring history ones. MoMa (Museum of modern Art) is AMAZING! As well as MAD (museum of art and design). And of course, clubs as well, since its the City That Never Sleeps. Hope I helped!

  • First of all make sure you keep your money in a safe place. I know a guy got $2,000 stolen from him from his backpack on a NYC bus so watch out...i would suggest you have like $350 if you wanna have fun but if you wanna do alot of stuff have some more money but most of the things there aren_t that expensive

  • Well it depends on which part of NYC your going to (its a really big city and in NYC its self there are tons of differ price ranges) When I went It was about $250 for the hotel $100+ for shopping $50+ for fun and maybe $30-$40 on taxi_s( depends how much you drive around) and $50 for other. So in all $490-$550.

Hope you have fun. Happy Birthday!!!!!

  • I would say at least $300 to $500 per day if you_re going to do a lot of shopping. You could do it less expensively if you use mass transit instead of cabs. You can pretty much get anywhere you want using subways.

  • i would say 2,000. if you want to do fun things, stay in a nice hotel, and shop. i wont take the taxi, walk or take the subway it is much cheaper and quicker.

  • Well, anywhere between $500 and $1000. Just spend it wisely.

    Good luck

  • visa platinum card.
