How is moving from the mainland to hawaii?|108449

I am moving from the mainland to hawaii in june and wanted to know the pros and cons of moving from here to there and of Hawaii. much appreciated. thanks.

  • This is my standard answer that I give.

Hawaii is expensive. Ninety percent of EVERYTHING is shipped in this is the main reason it cost more. Gas prices are coming down it is under three dollars.

Hawaii is just as safe as anywhere else maybe safer. We have everything the mainland has except for a few restaurants and stores. The water that surrounds us does not make much of a difference.

No Daylight Savings Time we never move out clock forward or back,

We have an excellent bus system on Oahu. If you are willing to take the time then it will cut down on gas costs. You can have car but you might want to take the bus most of the time and use a car only when really needed.

Hawaii is one of most culturally diverse place in America. We have several cultures here. Hawaiians being the most obvious. We also have a diverse Asian population; Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese (sp?). All these culture differ. And it is best if you learn the differences.

If you love food Hawaii is one of the best places to be. Due to our many cultures we have many different kinds of food. Try them all.

Due to Hawaii_s history there is some racism against Whites. Some can_t take this.

Not everybody who lives in Hawaii is Hawaiian. To be Hawaiian to must have Hawaiian blood. Or Hawaiian ancestry. If you are like me and have lived in Hawaii all their life but have no Hawaiian blood you are considered a Local.

We also have a dialect of Pidgin Creole English. Or it is called Pidgin for short. This language was created during the plantation days. We had workers from all over Asia and the Pacific they all spoke different languages and the needed a way to communicate. So a new language grew and was created. There a some who hear Pidgin an the equate it with lack of intelligence. Do not do this.

Then there is what can be called _Rock Fever_ some people tend to feel trapped because they can_t drive anywhere else but Hawaii. There is no way you can drive into another state.

If you need to fly home to the Mainland then 1) take more time because you have to fly over an ocean first. 2) Will cost more because you have to fly

  • All the chain of Hawaiian islands main source of income is guess....tourism. Most of the jobs are in Oahu, you have a better chance of making a living on Oahu. Geographically the island of Oahu is 30 miles wide by 44 miles tall, not too big but has over 1 million in population now. My wife is white, took her 8 months to find work even after numerous interviews.. i got work after 3 weeks. expensive, all your monies will go to rent, food and gas. good luck in saving any money. the beach is the most affordable on that island, costs you nothing. DMV licensing fees seem to constantly go up to pay for services. in Ca the value of your car goes down, so do the fees. Either you know somebody to hire you or you really have to compete with others for the same jobs. do you have a degree in teaching? or a RN? there are jobs in that field. if you cannot afford to live there, you can get roommates to help. Traffic in Oahu worse than CA traffic about 1 hour to go 20 miles during rush hour and its getting worse every year. the locals can be rude if you are white, you just be called a Haole (howLee) which means foreigner, not said in a kind way. Waikiki is expensive to shop there, geared to rich japanese with deep pockets. Locals dont shop there, prices sky high. When you are situated there you can ask for the kama_aina rate which means discount, in some places like the Dole Plantation. But rare if any in the touristy spots. Military is well suited out there with a housing allowance, but many dont stay, seems like they are not welcomed there. Hostility and homeless abounds in Leeward areas towards tourists. the truth is, hawaii needs tourists and needs the military to sustain itself, but seems to be hated by most of the locals. you are moving to _paradise_ at a rare time, paradise is where you choose to find it, you may be disappointed. saraimay75 is correct, but she never mentioned the homeless people and the high drug usage, but she is almost 90%

  • Which island and which city are you moving to?
Cons-much higher prices than most of the mainland.
    - _Island Fever_ after a year or two.
    - Much harder to get a full time job if you don_t have a sellable skill. Many jobs are limited to 20 hours/week so they don_t have to pay for health insurance, so many people work 2-3 low paying part time jobs to make ends meet.
Pros- it_s Hawaii, fergodsakes. Paradise. Everyone should live there for a year or two.

  • very hard very $$$$$$$$$

  • You_re going to love it. Pros - getting away from the mainland. crazy buggahs
  • How much does it cost to operate this heater?|143812

    Hi. Please help.

I use a 1200watts heater for 16hours per day. On average, how much($) would you be charged for this per month (in your state)?

If possible, indicate the cost of 1kwh of electricity and how u derived your answer.

    Thanx in advance.

  • My answer is $57.60.

    1200 watts is 1.2 kw. 1.2 kw X 16 hrs = 19.2 kwh every day.

    19.2 kwh X 30 days in a month = 576 kwh every month

    576 kwh x 10 cents/kwh = $57.60

I know the cost of electricity here in Pennsylvania is higher than in other states, so you may have to adjust accordingly.
  • What is there to do in Orlando that is free of charge?|125186

We have a weekend to do things, but little money. Can anyone suggest things to do that are free or inexpensive? It_s my 19 yr old son and I, so not really interested in the kid stuff.

  • YOu could walk around Old Town. A few shops--cute.~~

  • I was just going to suggest Lake Eola too. If you can pick up one of those Orlando Weekly newspapers they may tell you if there are any shows going on downtown, sometimes they are free. Another option might be to drive out to New Syrna Beach since it_s only about 45minutes away off I4 and is free and this time of year wouldn_t be too crowded. Bike week starts soon so just be careful of that!

  • There are a ton of things to do. You can simply do lunch at Lake Eola. Grab something cheap to eat, toss down a blanket and enjoy an afternoon in the sun. You can rent a swan paddle boat and go around the lake for an hour. That used to be $5 or $10. You can rent a Canoe at the Wekiwa marina, and canoe all day up and down the Wekiwa river. You_ll see all kinds of wildlife from turtles, to snakes and even alligators. I believe its $16 for the rental. You can also go down to North Frontage road just off South Semoran at the airport and park and watch the aircraft come in, they are so low you can almost touch them. Thats all free unless you decide on a hot dog from the vendor. There are litterally hundreds of great pubs and bars to go to to play darts and watch sports games. An order of wings, pitcher of beer or soda, and a few hours of pool or darts will run about $45 for example.

  • If you want a fun thing for you and your 19 year old, drive East to The Space Center. It_s free, although there are some things to spend money on, you could fill your day there for free. Displays, movies, etc.

For a nominal charge don_t miss the moon rocket display. It will bring back memories when you walk along the entire lenght of this Saturn V rocket.

You can drive over to Cape Canaveral Air Force Base and see all the really old missles. It is also free.
  • What are the things to do in Flordia and how many days should we take?|154512

We are planning to visit Florida. We plan to goto Disney World, NASA, and Universal Orlando. How many days should we spend at each one and approximately, how much would it cost? Are there any other places that you have enjoyed in Florida? If so, please tell me about them.

Thank You. Your help is greatly appreciated.

  • Disney, depending on what parks you want to go to can take from 1 to 3 or 4 days. 4 would be one park per day.

Nasa will only take about 1/2 a day, or a day at most.
Same with Universal if you order a 2 park pass.

Other places that are popular for people to visit would be the wild life exhibits like Gator Land (I would recommend Gator Farm in St. Augustine), the Everglades Etc.

St. Augustine is also a good place to visit. Very historical town that offers ghost tours, a beach nearby, and cheap shopping.

It all depends on what your looking for.

But if you want to take a good look at Florida, I would recommend about 2 weeks minimum.

  • depends what you want to do, how much money and time you have. theme parks cost close to 90.00 a day. i am not definate on prices. i have not been for a while and i only live a short distance. disney, sea world, epcot, mgm, universal, islands of adventure, animal kingdom, pleasure island if you are close to tampa there is busch gardens, adventure island, lowry park zoo, florida aquarium. museum of science and industry,
if you go to nasa, you can spend some time in cocoa beach too. daytona beach. sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much to do

  • Disney World-a must see (I like MGM 3D sound booth) NASA-VERY interesting I would go there again
Universal Orlando=this would not interest me - I_d rather take this day and drive over to the west coast and see the Gulf of Mexico - it is so beautiful there
How many days - humm Disney will take forever if you want to see everything - but you should see it once in your life
NASA - maybe a day - becasue of travel time
I like the Fanasy of Flight in Lakeland (I think)
    I love the Gulf
I would call the Hotel Direct to find the best deal or HotWire.com or maybe Priceline.com - call the Hotels 1st
ask them for their lowest rate - if it is not low - tell them you have some better deals else have
Airline - do you know anyone who works for an airline that could get you a buddy pass?

    whatever you do HAVE FUN

  • we have taken my 2 kid s to Disney - we have gone from 5 days to 11 days. Disney has 4 parks and 2 water parks we usually spend one day at each park and you still don_t get to see everything. I can help you with a trip if you want to book before 6/24/07 - there is a free dining plan avail that saves you alot of money if you are planning on going between 8/26 and 9/22/07 - it_s for 5 nights and 6 day packages and you need to stay in a resort - you can email scott835@verizon net for more info and a quote
  • What are the whale watching opportunities on the island of Kauai?|125667

I have been to Maui several times to see the whales but my wife and I want to visit the island of Kauai. I know Maui is the best for whale watching, but what are the opportunities for watching whales on Kauai? Are they very plentiful or is a sighting a rare occurrence?

  • More than likely in the winter months, they should be plentious. I know on Oahu they are!

  • Winter months (Middle of October to Mid February) for the whole state. Kauai would mainly be on the northern and western side.
They have zodiac boat tours that take you along the Na Pali Coast line and you can see the there. It_s a real beautiful boat trip
