Looking for an affordable area to move to in New England--Any suggestions for the budget concious?|157300

We enjoy the outdoors (mountain biking, camping, fishing, hiking, snowboarding, boating, etc) and are looking to get away from the hot, humid summers of southern Pennsylvania. I_ve always loved New England, and have spent a lot of time with family in Massachuesettes. We_re severly budget deprived, but would love to move north. She is finishing her masters in Regualtory Affairs; he works in a Library/Archives and edits manuscripts on the side. Are there any quaint areas in upstate New York, or throughout New England that won_t break the bank, are within reasonable distance of employment, but are still close to the beautiful outdoors?

  • It gets humid in New England too, pal!

Housing affordability is unfortunatly difficult and salaries much more modest than metro Boston-Providence almost everywhere in the more mountainous and rural areas of New England except maybe in impoverished areas like extreme northern New Hampshire and northern and way down east Maine. Taking that into account, you would most likely find contentment and jobs suiting you and lots of intellectual peers
in the northwestern Vermont arc from Montpelier to Burlington to St. Albans, the Rte US 7 corridor from just south of Williamstown, MA to Middlebury, VT, the Pioneer Valley / Connecticut River Valley area (Amherst-Northhampton-Deerfield to Brattleboro), central southwestern NH (centering on Peterborough) and, of course, the Upper Valley area within 25 miles of Dartmouth University in Hanover, NH.
  • How long does it take to get a package from Hawaii to Minnesota?|138193

I bought something from Hawaii and I have been waiting for it for like 5 days just wondering how long it takes to get here

  • It depends on how and when they shipped it. They may not have shipped it until a few days after you bought it. If they ship it by UPS regular (not two-day special) then it takes about a week. If they shipped it by Priority Mail, then it takes about 4 days. If they shipped it by Parcel Post then it takes 2 to 3 weeks.

I suggest you call the place you bought it from and ask them what date they shipped it, what shipping method they used, and whether they can tell you a tracking number so you can track your package on the shipping company_s website.
  • How much does it cost to visit New York?|149291

I am planning to go to New York solo for maybe a week or so in July of 2009... I would be leaving from Minneapolis MN and probably flying into NY. How much money should I save up? What expenses should I consider? Im not a big one on seeing the sights... mainly shopping and absorbing the culture. I have no idea where to start with what I have to prepare for or what I need! Can anyone help me out?

  • well a ticket for me for my august trip was 254.OO round trip from atlanta to NYC-LGA. and i booked it in a month advance. so dats pretty qood.. u shud try looking at tickets NOW . see wut wud ur price range wud be now nd kinda imagine how much it wud be when u buy them.

Taxis r Very Expensive. especiallii the dumbass taxi drivers who like 2 drive slow or _get lost_...so bring $3O-65 for taxi money. subway metrocards r fantastic, subways...kind of dirty and crowded...but.. for just onli $2.OO it would take u anywhurr in the 5 boroughs. so give it a qo. qo 2 hopstop.com for directions.

shopping is FANTASTIC , No taxes on clothing _ shoes. 32-34th street are the Best!! affordable!! weLL known stores. such as oldnavy, the infamous macy_s... its just great. 5th avenue is also awesome from tiffanys 2 prada 2 projects [if you drive a little farther down..........] but thats New York For You! _ greenwich village has awesome shoppinq as weLL..alot of boutiques but a little on the pricy side.

you could qo 2 the Met the MoMa [museum of modern art]
broadway, jog in central park ...etc.etc..

but one thinq i wud not suggest is qo 2 nYC by urself... ii mean i qo there by myself often, but.. i have family nd friends there so if anything qoes wrong i know i can call someone. its jus not safe. nyc is a huge city and huge cities can be dangerous, so yea qo w| sum1 ;)

_ i dunno about hotels, sorry... x] but ENJOY UR TRIP!

  • A word of caution, flying directly to New York will be costly, even if you book your flight with time. I stayed in a hotel 4 miles from manhattan in new jersey and it was honestly not the best service and it costed roughly $120 per night for 4 people. The cheapest hotel on manhattan will likely cost more than that but i think its worth it cause then you have the whole day since the moment you leave your hotel to explore the city and you dont have to worry about travel time to new york city and expensive ferry rides across the hudson river.
Everything in new york city is pricey.
A bottle of water costed us 3 dollars in battery park.
If by _absorbing the culture_ you mean going to a broadway show then you should call 1.800.BROADWAY (276-23929) for ticket info.
The official yellow colored taxis charge a flat fare of 45 dollars into manhattan from JFK airport, and charge around 25 dollars from La Guardia airport with bridge and tunnel tolls added on extra.
When walking around NYC always carry enough money with you in case you need to take a taxi and know the exact adress of your hotel cause the subways are not very safe to ride at night, although they are the most efficient way of getting around the city.
    Hope this helps.
And consider maybe taking a good friend with you.

  • hotel : about $1000
shopping money : up to you
    food : about $250?
    plane : idk
    taxi : idk

thats gonna be a lot of money! i dont know if going to nyc alone will be very fun personally and i think 1 week is too long. there isnt THAT much to do there just in the summer alone especially if you dont plan on sightseeing and stuff. bring somebody (:

  • Over $4000

  • How do you get from SF to Muir Woods on Public transportation?|159789

I live in San Francisco Ca and I don_t have a car. I was really hoping to go to muir woods sometime, but I can_t find out how to get there directly. I_ve checked out 511 and such and the shuttle (Which only operates in the summer) PLEASE if anyone knows how to get there tell me Thanks :-)

  • Other than the Golden Gate Transit summer shuttle, the only way to get directly to Muir Woods without a car is to join an organized tour.

However, Marin Stagecoach can get you pretty close to Muir Woods. From the Marin City Transit Center, board the Route 61 stagecoach. Get off at Pantoll Ranger station. From here, it is only about a half mile hike to the northern end of the woods. If you_re in decent shape, you won_t even break a sweat.

    http://www.marintransit.org/stage.html

To get to the Marin Transit Center from the city, take Golden Gate Transit Route 10. It passes through Civic Center.

In any case, you should plan for an start early in the morning. Using public transit, this will be a full day excursion.
  • What neighborhoods are good for families in Yuma, Arizona?|157698

I_m moving my family to Yuma from Washington for a job. I want to live somewhere safe and newer.

  • There is no hard and fast rules on safe neighborhoods in Yuma. Generally, the farther you are from the business areas, the newer and safer the neigborhood. The areas North of 24th Street are often older and more prone to gang activity but there are some notable exceptions. Most families say that the Crane School District schools are better than the Yuma District One Schools.

  • There are alot of new sudbivisions going up all over town. I would say that the Foothills is safer than in town and it is growing by leaps and bounds. If you need one on one help please email me directly. I_m a local realtor and can help you find something.

  • I_m not from Yuma and I have never been there, but maybe these websites below will help you in your search. Good luck.
