What are some tips for visiting Alcatraz?|136879

I_ll be visiting in August. Should I go at night? Can you go during the day and stay until the night boat leaves? Interesting facts about Alcatraz? Hauntings? What to see while there? Thanks!

  • I am a hotel concierge in San Francisco and I consistently help my guests visit Alcatraz. Yes, purchase your tickets in advance by going to www.blueandgoldfleet.com. They are the only authorized ferry service that lands on the island. The cost is $16.50 for the daytime, audio tour and $23.50 for the tours at night. DON_T pay any more than that.

  • Buy you tickets in advance!!!!

  • Yes, you can go in the daytime and stay till the night. Take the audio guided tour. It is really cool and it goes over everything including hauntings, and the best things to see there.

  • Take the first evening cruise - around 5ish. This way you get the daylight to see the island, etc.. But you get the incomparable views of SF on the boat ride back.

  • Reserve your ticket early, and be prepared for high winds.

  • Hey I_ll be going in October.I went to a web site and looked at it.Yes you can go at night, but I prefer to go during the day, because you can see more.It_s 26.50 aperson and you have to make a 30 day reservation.Don_t remember the web site,I just typed in Alcatraz in the yahoo search bar and I clicked on the first web site it gave me.I_ve never been and want to go.

  • Bring your own food, water, and bring a jacket. SF can be chilly even in the middle of summer!

  • Be sure to book the boat tickets early - like weeks before you go.
You can come and go as you like, as I recall.
The cell block is smaller than you might think. But you can spend 2-3 hours on the island and see it all.

  • Well I went in the day and it was amazing. If u go at night, u might not be able to see cuz everything was black and dark. They have these tours that u put a casette in a player and u walk around the prison. The only thing is it can become very confusing. However, it was absolutley amazing!!

  • bring a lunch from the mainland, the local chow is as bad as the jail food was

  • Buy your tickets way in advance! They sell out quickly! We were just there this last weekend and they told us the wait for tickets were 3-4 months, especially during the warmer months.

  • Well Alcatraz is really cool. I_ve been there in the day ,but I really want to go at night so that I can truly feel being in Alcatraz like its prisoners once did. Like others have told you buy your tickets weeks before because tickets disappear quickly. Also it is haunted. It is rumored to be haunted by the Robert _the birdman of alcatraz_ Stroud. It is also said that Al Capone_ s ghost is still around in the infirmatory where he spent most of his time because of his disease syphillis. They say u can sometime hear his banjo playing. Also make sure to check out the shower room which has a ghost that is allegedly trapped there because when he was alive he killed a man and is afraid of God_s punishment. Check the part of the shower room that is fenced though. Its really fun. U should also go in the night because I heard they have more activities than in the day. Also i almost forgot go in the holes in Cell Block D where supposedly a prisoner was killed by a ghost. I saw a show in which someone went inside the hole and the ghost made his presence known.
  • How long is the drive to the Grand Canyon West rim from the South rim?|137548

hey guys, i would really appreciate if anybody could help or give me some advices. Im planning on going to the Grand Canyon (south rim) this coming december and after that maybe stop for a couple of days in Vegas. I wanted to ask if anybody knows how long is the drive to the West rim, because the SkyWalk seems pretty interesting and maybe I wanted to make a quick stop there on the way to Vegas. What are your opinions ? is it worthed? Fees, etc...
    Thanks

  • Bad idea _The place is simply not worth the time or effort required there nor is it at the real Grand Canyon
Here_s their website_note the price and the no camera rule

    http://www.grandcanyonskywalk.com/

If you want a really great alternate routing to Las Vegas than route it over the N.Rim and thru Zion NP
    Directions
Exit GCNP via the Desert View entrance
Downhill to the jct of US 89@ Cameron AZ-get gas in Cameron-
North on US 89 to the jct of US 89 A at Bitter Springs AZ -about 60 miles
Left onto 89A Crossing the Rio on the New Navajo Bridge
Stop into the rest area and walk to the middle of the Old Navajo Bridge and look 467_ straight down to the Rio

    http://www.nps.gov/glca/historyculture/n

Stay with 89A up and over the N.Rim until it meets up again with US 89 at Kanab UT
Continue north until you get to the jct of SR 9 at Mount Carmel Junction UT
Make a left on SR9 and take that downhill thru Zion NP
SR 9 takes you to I-15 S which takes you to Las Vegas Get gas in either Hurricane or St George UT
Just so you know if you hit heavy snow on that route it will be between House Rock Valley and Fredonia AZ on US 89A _ADOT will occasionally post _ chains required for that stretch_ if they then still visit the Old Navajo Bridge -Lees Ferry area and then head back to US 89 and continue north thru Page AZ and into Kanab
    Safe trip
  • What is the address to the Waverly Hills Sanatorium?|135457

My friends and I are going there this weekend, but we can_t find any address to look up how to get there. Thanks in advance!

  • Why don_t you call them and ask. As far as I know, last time I heard, it wasn_t a place that was open to the public and is privately owned.
