How long does it take to get from DC to Vegas by Train?|112729

I know AMTRAK doesn_t do direct service, so I would probably have to take multiple trains. But does anyone know how long that would take in total (counting all train changes). Thanks and best regards.

  • From DC you take the Capitol Limited train to Chicago. That would be overnight; the train leaves DC in the afternoon and you get to Chicago the next morning. Then you change in Chicago to the Southwest Chief which leaves there in the afternoon and you would spend 2 full days on the train and get to a point where you can get off and get transportation to Vegas. You can get off the train at about 1:00 AM in Needles, Az, or about 3:30 AM in Barstow, Ca, or ride all the way to LA at about 9:00 AM. Then it depends on whether you want a bus or rental car to get to Vegas. So you spend 4/5 days using the train.

  • There are no public train service to Las Vegas. Amtrak does not go to Las Vegas. The closest stop I think is Kingman AZ. From there you will have to find your way by bus.

  • Not sure but it took me 3 days to go about the same distance.
  • What is the process of choosing a site at Leo Carrillo State Park?|198230

We have a reservation and I know that its first-come-first-served, but how early can we get there? When do we actually get the spot? Is there a point to arriving early? Thanks.

  • You show up as early as you want. The kiosk doesn_t open until 8. Some days they have a lottery, others it_s first-come, first serve. They have a list of sites available, and the first one to be chosen (or first in line, depending on lottery or FCFS) chooses their site around 9 AM. But you cannot get into the spot until the previous occupants leave. Checkout is noon.

So yes, there is a point to arriving early.

This is why I like Carpinteria, where they have sites assigned when you make the reservation.
  • What is the most needed skills to get a job in Las Vegas?|197832

We are moving to Las Vegas in a week and a half. We already have good jobs lined up in hospitality. However, we are always open to other things and want to be prepared for anything. So what would be the most needed skills in Vegas to get jobs? If we were going to go to school there for something, what would be the most wanted skills?

  • It all depends on what you_re good at _ how hard you want to work. There are always the casino jobs. I_ve known busmen who made good money clearing tables in the nicer dining rooms such as Palace Court at Caesar_s. Same with waitress work. In Las Vegas, there are also schools, hospitals, many corporate offices, etc. so your choices are many. Just choose what you_d like or know _ find out what it takes to do it then go for it.

  • Customer Service

  • You need to know people who can get you a good job. Period. It_s all about who you know.

  • Well, Harley Girl, based on your nickname I_m guessing you know what you_re good at...
  • What is the fastest way to get from SEA-TAC to the ship ports?|138062

We are flying into Seattle for our cruise to AK and need to get from SEA TAC to Peir 93 (I think); the cruiseline offers a shuttle service for $50 a person there and back... I can understand that being reasonable if its far, but if it is a cab distance, should I just do that?

  • Unfortunately the light rail going to downtown is not yet complete.

So I suggest you take a Taxi. I assume you have at least one other person going with you and $100 or more to go from SeaTac to the waterfront is crazy. A taxi will most certainly be cheaper.

  • Really, that_s not absolutely unreasonable (compared to the cost of a cab)

My wife recently took a cab from Seatac to the Coleman dock and I believe it cost 40 dollars. I assure you that the 50 they are charging you is not out of line ----For a cab fare ---

That being stated there are LOT cheaper ways to get to downtown Seattle from the airport. It all depends on if you are in a hurry or not. There are city buses, there is the Grey line Seattle (which stops at all the major hotels _ the airport) - it_s only 18 dollars round trip.
How much time do you have for your connection? See the 1st link below for additional options.

  • It_s not that far...take a cab or your cruise line may have a shuttle,,,,Ask the cab driver..
  • What are the Best Exhibits at the Smithsonian Museum?|185711

My family and I are visiting Washington next week and I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions of their favorite exhibits.

  • I_ll give you some of my favorites:

--The Wright Brothers plane at the Air _ Space Museum

--Touching a moon rock at the Air _ Space Museum

--The Insect Zoo at the Natural History Museum

--The Star Spangled Banner at the American History Museum

--The transportation hall (believe it_s called Man on the Move) at the American History Museum

--The Peacock Room at the Freer Museum

--The Hall of Presidents at the National Portrait Gallery

--The Gem Hall at the Natural History Museum

--The space capsules, including the Apollo 11 Command Module, at the Air _ Space Museum

--The IMAX Theaters at the Air _ Space Museum and the Natural History Museum, particularly when they are showing 3-D films.

  • Sorry, this is a loaded question because there are 19 Smithsonian Museums and National Zoo, 7 research centers in New York City, Virginia, and Panama.

You want to see full scale airplanes? There is a museum for that near Dulles Airport.
Want to see the largest stuffed elephant? Want to see an actual space capsule? Want to see the hope diamond? Want to see portraits? How about a Museum of American Indians? How about a Sculpture Garden?

I hope that this has started you to thinking. I do not know what your personal interests are so I suggest you do a little research at the below URLs.

This is my help from Washington, D.C. United States of America.
Please pick an answer as the best answer, even if it is not mine.

  • In addition to Don_s answers, I_ll add the pandas exhibit and the orangutan exhibit at the National Zoo, which is also part of the Smithsonian.

  • there are 19 smithsonian museums, need to be a bit more specific :]

  • We went to the Natural History one while we were there. It was pretty cool- thats the one with the Hope Diamond!
