Where is a good area in Philadelphia for a young graduate student to move to?|172253

I was just accepted last minute to a graduate program in Philadelphia. I_ll be re-locating from NYC to the Philadelphia area and am looking for some good areas for a 23 year old single female to move to. I would prefer somewhere with lots of other young adults/college grads. What_s my best bet?

Any suggestions?

  • rittenhouse square is good. having lived in powelton village it is not the BEST area but is by far not the worst. i like queen village and brewerytown is an up and coming neighborhood. overbrook and wynfield heights are nice calm areas close to st. joes. manayunk and roxborough have an active nightlife and close to public transportation.

  • University City, Powelton Village, or Rittenhouse Square West.
  • My husband and I are driving from Maryland to Arizona in a Rental Truck, should we stop and get a hotel?|182765

no, be cheap and sleep in the rental truck in rest areas on the interstate-they are much safer than hotels and you_ll get a better night_s sleep crammed into the cab of the truck

How do you feel on the 1 Year Anniversary of Katrina?|196228

I_m feeling kinda blue kinda thinking about how it was around here 1 year ago today. Just remembering all the anxieties and strife.

    It_s not over yet.

  • Frustrated and disgusted! I live on the westbank of the Mississippi River across from New Orleans. The Mayor of New Orleanbs is a racist and whiner. He scrapped his plan for rebuilding New Orleans because the residents in the 9th Ward wanted their community rebuilt which defies logic and of course he did this to obtain their votes along with his _chocolate theory_ for the city.
Anybody who has been in the 9th Ward can see that it needs to be bulldozed and filled in with dirt then reinhabited as the population dictates. But the former residents want their neigborhood rebuilt and also want the government to pay for it.. Isn_t that nice.
Well, here we are 1 year later and there is no plan for rebuilding New Orleans and there is no timetable as to when a plan would be available. However, the mayor blasts the government for not providing funding. Imagine a city with the reputation that New Orleans has as to corruption and yes, even though we have no plan of action just send us money. Right!!!
This thing is turning into a joke while Mississippi is well on its way to recovery.

  • Oh ****!!!!I knew id forgotten to buy her a card!!!!

  • I_m gonna go loot my local K-Mart as a memorial gesture.

  • It_s sad. But it_s over with. Stop dwelling in the past. Yes they derserve more help but at the same time, they were told to evacuate and didn_t.

  • kinda tired ! i didnt sleep alot last night !!

  • its sad, because even after a year, there is alot of work to be done, i heard about half the population went back, and the rebulding is really just sarting now

  • PISSED THAT EVERYTHING HAS TO HAVE AN ANNIVERSATY. USE THAT ENERGY TO DO SOMETHING FOR THE PEOPLE AFFECTED.

  • I feel very sad when I think about what all those poor people went through in New Orleans and how that wonderful city was destroyed by the hurricane. I am glad, however, that so many came to their aid and that many have been able to pick up their lives where they left off with hope and a better future.

  • it was great. for the first time americans tasted their own pie.
i feel sorry for the people but what americans did and what they are doing right now hatret feeling takes over all other feelings.

  • nothing just happy that the victoms got through it!

  • I_m glad the French Quarter wasn_t badly damaged. The rest of the City looked like a slum anyway, so who_s gonna cry over that?

  • I_m very sad that so much time, money _ energy is being put to rebuild a city that never should have had that location in the 1st place. The guy who founded it had engineers w/ him who advised against that location.... he ignored them! So, now we see the result.
It_s just a bad spot for a city, it_ll get blown away again _ we_ll pay to rebuild... again. It shoudl be moved a few miles north, to stable ground.
W/ Global Warming, sea level is projected to rise 5-15 feet. There are parts of N.O. that have sank 10 ft _ are still sinking. That puts those areas up to 25 ft below sea level, I guess even the ocean is prejudice against Jessie Jackson!

It just doesn_t make sense to rebuild a city in a place that was bad to begin w/!!!!!

  • I feel sorry for those who lost loved ones, their homes, and things they cherished. Also, I just want to say that God is with every single one of those people just like he is with the rest of us. I pray every day for the world and that it will someday calm down enough for people to enjoy life again without having to worry about what_s going on.

  • I feel sorry for the people who have no houses, schools, or hospitals

  • It didn_t effect me personally, but it did. I mean I didn_t know anyone there, but for the grace of GOD that could_ve been me and my heart goes out to all those who lost love ones and anyone who had to endure such a time. I was just saying last night that I don_t know how I wouldn_ve made it, but those people found strength and I am really in a sad place today.

  • I will tell you this.
I watched the whole thing from tv at home and it saddened the hell out me. i had really close friend from there and was worried to death abou them and their family. It was tragic.

I was there 4 weeks ago today and i tell you its a year later, and all the reading watching hearing no where near prepared me for what i saw... a year later and it still looks like it happened yesterday...

A long way to go guys... but keep at it.... God Bless

  • Angry that the situation was botched so badly. People are dead because of incompetence in the response. Wal Mart actually got the there before FEMA - the government should model their future responses after what they did. The only good thing to come out of Katrina was an awareness of just how unprepared we are for major national disasters.

  • My heart still goes out to those affected by Hurricane Katrina. I realize that their struggles still continue. I wish that they would be able to rebuild their homes and establish their lives in the town that they call home. I can_t imagine what they have experienced and are still experiencing. I am going to say a prayer for them again today.

  • I am disgusted with the fact that they have not made a group of people to sit down and go over everything that needs to be done, make a list and then ask for funding from the government. There is not set plan that I have heard of and its been a year.I would be pissed at my local politicians for this.Another thing that pisses me off is that people don_t understand that at the time of Katrina, the local politicians were the ones to ask and receive help from the government. Our government is set up so that _it_ as an entity can not get involved until the local politicians ask for it.State and Government are not the same. Its a local mishandling.

  • a little hungry..how about u?

  • Alot done more to do

  • It_s a sad memory, but its life. Just remembering how crazy things were and how devastating it was. I hope that everyone who was affected has started to get their lives back.

  • hugs to you. Bless you on this day of rememberence of all the devastation and loss. I pray that Nawlins will be the grand ole city she used to be.

  • there is a lot to do and more to do after that. the reminder of what has happen to people and here homes and family will never beforgotten. i say a pray for all of you out there still dealing with the lost of what matters the most whather it was a person , a place, a pet or a happy home. i have home and faith in that one day new orleans and the many wonderfull people that live and lost there i hope one day it will feel like home again.

  • UN/world/richest countries
    do bold steps like
    encourage the scientists/engeniers
to work on to stop other future katrina...

  • Sad, definately sad. I_m from Florida and Katrina wasn_t so bad down here, but I remeber the news reports. I was watching in disbelief. I had never seen so much distruction and people panicking.

  • I wish they were getting more help down there...

  • Bad - especially cuz ERNESTO IS COMMING!!!

  • Why is it STILL screwed up in there? Why did republicans talk about abandoning the town? Have we learned nothing?

  • I feel sorry for all the people who haven_t even found a home. I can_t believe it_s already been a year. It seems like it happened yesterday. I wish I could win the lottery and I would help some people find homes. I think all the rich people in the world should donate their money to fixing up the Gulf Coast every where. Does Bill Gates really need all of his billions of dollars. He could spare a few to build some little homes.

  • I am thinking,, how come all of those houses aren_t cleaned up.

I see trash and stuff,, I believe that a family could hire someone to go and make the repairs, etc.
If they didn_t have Insurance,, well that was their loss!

I know a lot of families who went in , worked hard, and got it done..they didn_t wait for Fema to help.......
I guess if they are use to living off the government then,,, it wouldn_t bother you.
  • Universal Orlando and Islands Of Adventure, looking for good rides or shows to take a 14 year old boy?|108348

Spending two days at universal orlando and islands of adventure and looing for suggestions on the best rides /amusements to take a 14 year old boy who likes anything fast or loaded with graphics?

  • Universal Orlando just about everything there is aimed at his age group. Another suggestion is in Downtown Disney, there is this place called Disney Quest. It is awesome, Id say a bit expensive but worth every single dollar. It is all interactive and indoors. Best kept secret.
