What are some great nieghborhoods less than 5-10 miles away or in downtown Chicago?|170337

I_m considering moving there. I already live in an _urban-esque_ atmosphere and I_d like to stay in a busy, urban, cultured, near local shops and resturants and of course night life area. Thanks!

  • Try Wicker park, Logan Square, Andersonville, Edgewater, Lakeview, Lincoln Park, West Town...

Below are links to two websiter about Chicago neighborhoods. One has info on the average rent, demographics, etc. The other has photos from the various neighborhods. Just click on a neighborhood on the maps to see the info.

  • Gas Guy is right in that the South Side can be really great, and is the most rapidly changing area of the city, but Beverly (no offense Gas Guy) is WAY south, like end of the earth south...beautiful, and extremely nice homes, but more like a suburb in a lot of ways than a part of the city (which is why a majority of city cops and firemen live there). If you still want to go for South Side atmosphere, which is a mix of young professionals buying their first condos and families who have been there for generations, as well as (just to be honest) some of the affordable housing in the post-housing projects era, go for Bridgeport, Taylor Street/UIC, and South Loop (where Mayor Daley now lives). The area is just a few minutes away from the Loop but it_s got amazing restaurants, bars, and street festivals.

I_m more of a North Side type, and feel that there_s a little more cultural activity and artsy fartsy stuff to do up there, and prefer Old Town, Lincoln Park, Bucktown, Logan Square, and Wrigleyville. For now, steer clear of Rogers Park...crime_s been troubling lately!

  • You could consider Oak Park. It is 15 min by Green Line from the loop and about 25% cheaper to rent or buy there than Lincoln Park and Lakeview. I think they are still pretty urban and people walk everywhere although it is technically outside the boundaries of the city of Chicago. There is a multitude of shopping there and restaurants, but for _nightlife_ you might be coming back into the city because there aren_t any night clubs there.

  • You could consider Evanston. It is convenient to public transportation, has a feeling of its own and is part of Northwestern University_s culture and atmosphere, and has great restaurants.

  • well were i live is great on the S-O-U-T-H S-I-DE the neighborhood is called mt.greenwood/beverly area. there are alot of good restaurants and great bars/clubs around. sure we don_t get to see that beautiful skyline that downtown residents see but hey thats what makes us southsiders and not yuppies

  • I live on the Southwest side of Chicago...9 miles southwest of downtown....Its the Garfield Ridge neighborhood...Midway airport is in this neighborhood...The neighborhood is very nice...If you are white, it will be even better for you since it is a majority white neighborhood...the only bad thing is I hope you have some money because the prices of the houses are a lot and you will get raped on taxes too since Chicago is trying to keep the minorities out of my neighborhood. Party neighborhood!
