How much leave from work do you get on average in America?|188978

My wife and I are looking at moving to New York in the near future and would like to know roughly what a company give you ? Also any national holidays would be good to :-)

  • It depends on 3 things: The state you live in, the company you work for, and what kind of employee you are. I live in Florida and the average amount of vacation time you are allowed per year is about 3 weeks, with an extra week or two if you have a personal reason for taking the time off. I have family living in New York and they tell me its pretty much the same thing there. In addition, you will get Christmas Eve, Christmas, 4th of July, and Thanksgiving off. For most companies, those are the only holidays you get off, but like I said earlier, it depends on the company.

  • There is not a national policy - it is determined by the company you work for. Paid holidays are typically Christmas Day, New Years Day, Thanksgiving, Labor Day, 4th of July, Memorial Day and Martin Luther Kings Birthday and Presidents day. If you are in retail however - you don_t even get those off.

You might have some sick days and you might have some vacation after at least a year on the job. Most common is 1 week for every year you_ve been there.

  • Usually you get 10 days vacation + 5 days personal... so basically 3 weeks. Holidays are roughly 10 total days.

Of course, so many things are negotiable. If you have 10+ years of experience, you might get 4 weeks off with some employers.

  • New Years Day
    Christmas Day,
    Memorial Day
    Labor Day
    Thanksgiving Day
    4th of July

  • 12 paid holidays and 10 vacation days.
    You earn sick days
