Can i work in different places in america with a H2B visa?|100212

Me and a friend are hoping to travel and work on our way in America. I_ve been looking into which Visa we both would need and as far as i can see the H2B Visa is the one. What I am unsure on is, does this visa only entitle us to work at one specific place with one employer or can we travel to different places and work? The trip would hopefully be about 6 months and start at San Francisco from the UK.

Any help or advice welcome.

  • An H2B visa is specific to an employer. You are not allowed to change jobs unless you quit. And an H2B employer is not going to be happy about that! H2B employers have to pay all the fees to get you here, including one-way airfare, so they really want someone who is going to stay with them.

If you quit your job, the H2B employer has to report you to Dept of Homeland Security. This is not a good thing for you.

You can, however, extend your H2B visa to another employer, preferably at the end of your first H2B visa. You will have to do your homework and find someone to sponsor you for both visas. You do not have to leave the USA to get the second H2B visa.

Your best bet may be a J1 work and travel visa. There are J1 agencies that can assist you with this.

Or you can simply come as tourists, travel around and not work. That might be your best bet.

    Good luck to you.
