How do I get a work permit for America?|125262

I_m from the UK and during my gap year I would like to visit various countries. While I_m in America I would like to be able to get a temporary job (just working in a diner etc.).
How do I go about getting a work permit and what kind of permit would I need? I plan to be there for 1 - 3 months.

  • Get in the back of the line behind the 20 million other unemployed people. Good luck!

  • Probably not going to happen. To legally work in the United States you need a work visa, and the ONLY way to get one is to be sponsored by an American company because you have a job skill in demand in the U.S., and there aren_t enough qualified Americans to fill all the jobs.

Currently the ONLY professions to qualify for a work visa are in Advanced Medicine, Engineering, and Advanced Computer Technology. Plain trades people (like diner waitresses) will not even be considered. There are no shortage of Americans who can wait tables.

Forget about _Foreign Exchange_ programs too. Those are for students, and do NOT allow you to work while here. Same goes for tourist visas, you aren_t allowed to work here while you_re a visitor. Sorry.

  • Not going to happen. We have lots of candidates for jobs _working in a diner_. You need a work visa/permit, which an employer would help you get when they hire you. And that won_t happen [especially from the UK - long waiting list] unless you have a special, in-demand skill that people here in the US can_t fill.

The State Department website has info about permits and visas.

  • maybe your town hall? they have them at high schools too so if you know anyone in a high school, ask them. have your friend tell the person in the office it is for him or herself
