What is the quickest route between Fresno and San Diego?|148566

Quickest route 405 south to 5? Someone told be to take 210 to 57 to 5? I don_t know what traffic is like through LA. What time is best to go through LA area before 4 or After 7pm? I know the 5 is easiers but isn_t the traffic terrible on it. Thanks for your help.

  • Here is my quickest route and I have driven it often. By doing this route you avoid the traffic issues and you avoid the LA area.

    From Fresno..
Go down the 99 to the 5 freeway.

While on the 5 as you come down the Grapevine you will see HIGHWAY 138. You can only take that EAST. Take it till you get to the 14 freeway then head south.

You will cross HIGHWAY 138 again where it continues, then you take this highway 138 until you get to the 15 freeway.

Take the 15 freeway south towards San Diego and it leads you right into SD.

This route is the least congested and you avoid the LA area.

    99 south to..
    5 south to..
    138 east to..
    14 south to..
    138 east to..
    15 south to
    SAN DIEGO.

It_s alot easier then it sounds here. Look it up on a map/

  • In San Diego, are you going to anywhere near highway 15?

If you_re going to be near the 15 in San Diego, then the 210 will take you all the way to the 15, which might actually be the better way to go.

If you_re not going near the 15 in San Diego, then just consider that the 405 has more carpool lanes than the 5 does, so that might be a better way to go.

Traffic is terrible on ALL freeways between 3 and 7 actually, and there is the potential for tie ups pretty much 24/7. However, the carpool lanes on the 405 really do help.

If you_re traveling by yourself, then just stick with the 5 all the way down. If you look on a map, the 405 is just a big loop of highway 5. They meet twice - once up in Sylmar, and again down in El Toro, however the 5 all the way is a much more direct route and will easily cut about 40-50 miles from your trip, even if you DO run into more traffic.

So, to sum up ... going near the 15? Take the 210 all the way across (it has a carpool almost the whole duration from beginning to end). Travelling not near the 15, but with a friend? Take the 405 because it has more carpool lanes than the 5, even though it_s more miles. Travelling by yourself, not near the 15? Take the 5 because it_s more direct even though it might have more traffic problems.

A word of caution if you do decide on the 5: WATCH YOUR SIGNS ! The East LA interchange can be daunting, but if you pay attention, you_ll do just fine.

    Happy driving !!

Oh yea ... keep your radio on AM 980 and AM 1070 for frequent traffic updates.

    :D

  • Hay Chihuahua! Perro de Lava sounds a lot like Mad Dog!

But he_s right. Cut over Pearblossom Highway (138), and avoid the whole LA traffic scene altogether. I_ve used that cutoff when I want to avoid the usual Friday night getaway traffic to Vegas.

  • take the 99 to 5
go thru the valley and LA and santa ana between 9am and 2pm or after 9pm

  • your best bet is I 5 to hwy 99 and go through LA after 7 or around 2 pm if you are traveling in the afternoon or evening
