Where is a good place to visit for a weekend in California that is drivable from Orange County?|114795

I live in Newport Beach, CA. My mother and I want to go out of town for a weekend. Where is a good place is that is not too far, not too close, and has a lot of things to do? Also, a place that isn_t too expensive is what we are aiming for!
