Where is a beach near New Orleans that we could spend the day?|124293

We_re drving down and only have a day to soak up the sun and i wanted to stay farily close to new orleans. Any ideas?

  • not really

Biloxi is the closest but it_s not much of a beach, more like a place to go to gamble.

Dauphin Island is 160 miles or 2 1/2 hours turn right at Mobile.

how about a water park in Baton Rouge?

  • 77 miles- 1 hour and 14 minutes- Gulf Port, MS
90 miles- 1 hour and 23 minutes- Biloxi, MS
106 miles- 2 hours and 28 minutes- Grand Isle, La
188 miles- 3 hours and 10 minutes- Guf Shores, AL

Grand Isle is my personal favorite. The Gulf of Mexico crashes right onto the clean white sand, and there_s rarely anyone else out when I go. Great for surf fishing, also the little run offs that aren_t so choppy are awesome for regular ol_ fishing pole fishing. Its great for laying out and catching some peaceful warm rays.

New Orleans is surrounded by a lake (Lake Ponchitrain) and a river (The Mississippi). Neither off _beach like_ shores. The Miss. is more of an industrial marine travel way and the Lake, well, in 2007 I caught a 15 pound sting ray, a four foot bull shark, and a four foot alligator gar out of Lake Ponchitrain where Bally_s Casino used to be at the Belle of Orleans at the Levee (by that little air port). So I wouldn_t go swimming in there if I were you.

    Good luck.

  • The other answers are correct and you have to drive a long way from New Orleans to find a nice beach. The Alabama coast (about 3 hours drive) is the closest source of white sand _ clear water. New Orleans is on Lake Pontchartrain, but the _lake_ is actually a bay with a mud bottom and and the water is silty + brackish.

If swimming isn_t essential and you just want to sun-bathe, you can go to the lakefront, which is a very nice miles-long linear park. Commercial development is prohibited in the lakefront park, but there are numerous shelters (open-air but with bathrooms _ picnic tables) scattered along its length.

You can reserve a shelter by calling the Orleans Levee District (a government agency): Tel. 504-286-3100

To get to the lakefront park from downtown, either take Elysian Fields Avenue to the lake and turn left, or take I-10 West to the West End exit, take West End Blvd. to the lake and turn right.

The first shelter (actually Shelter # 1) is about 100 yards to the right (from West End Blvd) after you reach the lake.

There are also several restaurants in the West End area, such as Russell_s Marina Grill (great food) and Landry_s (OK food, great view).

  • You could go to Grand Isle Louisiana. Probably under two hrs. to get there. Its a small island off the La. coast. Nothing like beaches in the other states. But, its holds a special place in most of our hearts down here. I_d rather be there than on the white beaches of Florida!

It in Jefferson Parish. If you need any more info, or directions, I_d be happy to help you out. Just email me.

  • grand isle is about as close as you can get and stay in state.
