That_s a good question, because most of the bay area(San Francisco area) is great, but it_s very expensive. I also love the Shasta/Redding area. It_s much more affordable, has low crime and good schools. The only problem with that area is it_s pretty far from any university.But all in all, it_s beautiful, near Shasta lake and mountain and a couple of hours from the coast.
