What are the best and worse parts of San Francisco to live in?

I am wanting to go to San Francisco State University, and know nothing about the area or the neighborhoods of San Francisco. What are the best and worse areas I.E. what areas should be avoided.

I want to live some place that doesn_t have a high crime rate where I feel safe and there_s not much crime all over the place and where I can take public transit to the university.

Please help!

Good Areas: Marina, Pacific Hights, Sea Cliff ----but its VERY $$ to live there and i doubt an SFSU student is a multimillionaire.

BAD AREAS: STAY AWAY FROM HUNTERS POINT....very crime infested.....also the Haight is kinda bad...lots of homeless. and the Tenderloin

good residential areas: sunset and richmond.

but if ur going to SFSU, id suggest you either live in a dorm or in a place called parkmerced. its full of college students and within walking distance of campus (5-10 min walk). also, you could rent a 2 bedroom and stuff like 10 people in and split the rent.

probably one of the best places for you is the sunset or west portal. they have nice homes for decent prices, and a low crime rate. people are nice, the shopping is pretty good, and the transportation is excellent. and also, in the sunset, its almost impossible to get lost. the streets are arranged in a grid (which is pretty nice for sf)--and are arranged in alphabetical and numerical order.

be sure to avoid hunters point, bayview, and the tenderloin at ALL COSTS. don_t walk on the haight at night. if you_re a girl, im pretty sure you wouldn_t want to be raped.

you could also stay in one of the suburbs...san bruno would probably be your best bet because its pretty, the people are great, and theres a large mall. there are well-built apartments that are a decent price.
daly city and south san francisco arent as nice--the houses can be kind of icky :P. also, transportation would be kind of a problem for all suburbs.

keep in mind--san francisco and the bay area usually has very high prices for housing. due to the recession, it_s gone down quite a bit, but it can still be pretty expensive.

It is hit or miss in a lot of the parts. It_s all pretty expensive. I_ve heard the worst is the area known as the _tenderloin._ Here is forum to read:

Personal experience_ Ran into it. Man follwed me for almost two blocks with a sharpened 2x4 and kept saying in a threatening tone _what! you lost?_ I asked a cop where to go, and he said _Well you won_t ever be able to get a cab to pull over in this place._ A big fat mexican guy comes strolling out of a bar and got in my face saying _You_re in the wronggggg part of town little girl._ I am an attractive, petite woman and was scared out of my f*****g mind! P.S. I just got out of a Giants game and had my hat and jersey on so I looked like a total tourist.

If you want to live to go to SF State, I would suggest you consider living in Daly City as it_s cheaper. You_ll have to commute, but if price is a concern, then perhaps you might want to look outside.

The areas near State are Merced, Ingleside and West Portal. The Richmond and Sunset districts are residential neighborhoods. You_ll have to take MUNI (there_s a main line on 19th Ave), but the Richmond and Sunset areas are probably _safer_ relatively speaking.

Sometimes SF can be frustrating to navigate because MUNI is pretty frustrating and BART does not directly go to SF State. Other areas mentioned, ie the Tenderloin, (which is not at ALL near the Giants ballpark) Bayview and Hunters Point (Both of which ARE closer to the Giants ballpark). There tend to be lot of homeless and/or lower income residents and there have been issues with loitering and crime in those areas.

The Marina and North Beach are higher income _yuppie_ areas, which is probably not your thing. Those areas, as well as The Presidio as well as the outer Sunset and Richmond are COLD because of their proximity to the water.

The Mission District is very popular for students, although again, commuting might be an issue.
