Besides Washington DC, what are must sees in the Virginia area when staying close to Dulles?|144881

We_re going to the Air and Space museum around Dulles on Friday, and back to DC tomorrow, so today we want to go somewhere within a two hour distance from Dulles.

Where would you say is a must see? It can be historical, or just somewhere really fun.

  • There are several wineries to the west of Dulles in Loudon county

Across Rte 28 from the Air and Space Museum is Sully Historic Site. There are guided tours that highlight the early 19th century life of the Richard Bland Lee family, tenant farmers and enslaved African Americans.

Manassas Battlefield about 15 miles southwest of the Air and Space Museum is a historic Civil War battlefield. There are lots of fields and sites to hike and walk and explore the first and second battle of the Civil War. Most of it you are on your own, with an information pamplet and monuments, markers and signs to read.

Just south of the battlefield in manassas is splashdown waterpark. That can be alot of fun after hiking through the fields on a hot day. They have discount prices after 3pm.

  • Bull Run park and Manassas battlefield park are both cool. Civil war history stuff, but really nice very large parks even if you_re not into the Civil war. Bull run has nature trails, a pool and they used to have a ranger take small groups around and give them a little tour of a few of the sights, I don_t know if they do that anymore. The counties in the area of Dulles airport are Fairfax and Prince William. You might look them up and see what_s going on. Then there is Mount Vernon, the home of our first president. The estate, gardens and farm of Mount Vernon totaled some 8,000 acres in the 18th century. Today, roughly 500 acres of this historic estate have been preserved 16 miles south of Washington, D.C., on the banks of the Potomac River. Visitors can see 20 structures and 50 acres of gardens as they existed in 1799. The estate also includes a museum, the tombs of George and Martha Washington, Washington_s greenhouse, an outdoor exhibit devoted to American agriculture as practiced by Washington, the nation_s most important memorial to the accomplishments of 18th-century slaves, and a collection which features numerous decorative and domestic artifacts. There is an incredible amount of history in the area. I hope you have a great time!
