How much money would I need to move to New York City?|148684

How much money would I need to move to NYC without having a job or an apartment already waiting for me. I would plan to find an temp apartment prior to moving there, and once in that apartment, start a job search. How much money do you thinK I would need in that situation?

  • A tiny studio apartment in NYC (Manhattan) will cost about at least $1200. You_ll need to pay a security deposit (usually 1 month_s rent) plus first month_s rent so that will be about $3000 or even more if you use a broker. Or you can have a roommate which will cut down costs by half. Then you also need money for subway and food. So I_d say, plan to have about $4000.

  • Man.....ummm....NY is expensive just like LA......save up alot for about a year first.....but before you go I recommend that you find a job and apartment...makes more sense to do so before hand

  • You_ll save on car expenses, but you_ll need to save your money for taxis!

I think New York can be expensive. You really should first line up a job, then try to find an apartment as close as possible to where you will be working.

    Good luck!

  • Hit the lottery first. NYC is very expensive.

  • realistically..
sublets are more expensive than rentals.
    ( sublets about $3000. per month..rentals $2500.00)
but manhattan is very very expensive.
you would need a minimum of one years salary.
    ( rentals..food...clothing..etc..)
you don_t know how long your job search will take..nor do you know if the job you land will work out.
it_s not the city you want to wind up in with no money no job and no apartment.

  • More money than God

  • Oh man thats a tough one..it depends on where in NYC you want to live or relocate to.

why not find a job first and have a guarantee that you_re actually hired and then move out there ?

Finding a temp place to live isn_t that hard i nyc..you can go to craigslist
    http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/ny
and look things up same as you can look for a job first before moving out there.

If you_re just wanting to pack up and take like 5 thousand dollars with you you may be in big trouble..depending where it is you want to live..

Bronx ? Manhatten ? etc etc you know ?

Get a job first..that way you will have a better idea of what you can and cannot afford in terms of living and housing expenses and it will give you a better idea of how much money you have to play with in that big city.

    Good luck

Im wanting to live there but money is a big issue..

  • Hahaha actually New York is not as expensive as you think it is....

  • Live outside of NYC and get a job in the city. You can move to northern New Jersey and find a studio apt. in a nice area for about $800 a month, as opposed to $1500 a month in the city, you might even find a less expensive apartment in Queens and Brooklyn. You get the benefit of living near NYC without the expense.
