What clothing should i get for college in PA as the weather is so different from California (my home)?|121210

I am moving to PA for college and I have lived in California all my life. therefore, I am not sure what kind of clothing I need because I hear the winters are brutal compared to the mild CA winters. Is it really necessary to have a _winter wardrobe_ like I_ve been told by so many on the West Coast?

  • Not really brutal. (Minnesota is brutal.) Just cold and wet. You_ll need boots for snow, and a good coat that comes down below your hips for about November to March. Also a hat and gloves. Wait until you get to school to see what the other kids are wearing. Some schools keep the rooms warmer than others, but you_ll generally need long-sleeved shirts and a couple of sweaters. Don_t worry about long underwear or real cold-weather gear unless you are going hunting/camping, or to a football game.

  • For winter in Pennsylvania you will need warm gloves, a heavy coat, a lined raincoat, and a pair of rubber boots. Wait until you move to buy them. You will freeze your first winter, after that you will become acclimatized to the winter weather, and it won_t bother you that much. You will also definitely notice the humidity in the summer.

If you_re taking a car it will need antifreeze protection for about 34 below zero (it never gets that cold, it_s just a safety margin), snow tires or tire chains for the drive tires, and a windshield scraper. If your car is not undercoated the salt on the roadways will begin to rust it apart.
