What are some great vacation spots in the United States?|142448

My husband and I like to go somewhere new every year. Where are some of your favorite places to vacation in the US?

  • New Orleans is tops for food and jazz, although the city can be pretty empty at times. I have great memories of Arnaud_s, Antoine_s, Commodore_s Palace, Brennan_s, K-Paul_s Louisiana Kitchen, and Cafe du Monde Take a New Orleans tour, and be certain to visit during Mardi Gras if you love human spectacles (the major hotels set up bleachers; inquire ahead of time for ticket availability). I wouldn_t go if I didn_t plan to spend money on fine dining personally.

I enjoyed a river tour down to the Chalmette Battlefield. Others have told me that Alligator Annie_s Swamp _ Marsh Tour, although Annie has passed on, is well worth the time, but I_ve never done it.

Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Grand Canyon (allow time for Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona_s Red Rock Country) are all places that I wouldn_t want to miss in a lifetime. Allow sufficient time to soak up the beauty of these places, especially Yosemite and Yellowstone. Colorado Springs with Pike_s Peak and the Garden of the Gods is beautiful, but I would want to visit the famed national parks first.

New York City_s museums are top notch, Broadway is Broadway, but my favorite place is the Empire State Building at night, but especially on a clear night. For some reason, the lines are much shorter nearer to closing. Tours of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty shouldn_t be missed. Personally, I would want to check out the Intrepid.

Washington, D.C. offers a tremendous plate of opportunities. There are so many attractions that some sites, such as the National Cathedral, nearby Williamsburg and Mount Vernon, are missed by most visitors.

If you like history, I wouldn_t want to miss a tour of Gettysburg and Antietam (I personally prefer Antietam). It could be combined with a visit to Baltimore (National Aquarium), Washington, or both.

Dayton, Ohio, is the mecca of aviation history. The U.S. Air Force Museum is the world_s best military air museum and takes a day to tour, at a minimum. You can walk through many presidential airplanes. The federal government has preserved many of the Wright Brothers_ sites, including the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, where the first airplane was developed and flown (the Wrights only flew a powered glider at Kitty Hawk). The first real airplane isn_t at the Smithsonian but at Dayton_s Carillon Park, an enjoyable historical park, and you can get within five feet of it.

Dayton, once one of the wealthiest cities in the U.S. as a center of the aircraft, automobile and cash register (NCR) industries, among others, has a very good art museum.

You could combine a trip to Dayton with a visit to Cincinnati, Columbus, or even the Wilds, a gigantic wildlife preserve. Or, you could head about three hours north to Cedar Point, the roller coaster capital of the world, and the Lake Erie islands.

Another of my favorite places is the Signature Lounge atop the John Hancock Center in Chicago, a city which would merit a 2-3 days stay at a minimum in the summer.

Of course, everybody loves San Francisco. Many friends, however, number Alaska among their favorite destinations.

If you go to Orlando, head east for the Kennedy Space Center and the nearby coastline parks. I loved the pier at Cocoa Beach at night, much more enjoyable for some reason than the piers in southern California.

BOL for a number of great vacations in coming years!

  • Yellowstone is very cool if you want to see nature stuff you cannot see elsewhere. There are geysers and bears and moose and wolves...Most of the park is inside a giant volcano, after all.

We love Hilton Head island. Much of it is gated communities so it makes a big difference where you stay there. From there you can Savannah Ga.

Kiawa Island is a beach/condo kind of place that is close to Charleston. Charleston has some cool stuff to see. We did the carriage tour there. We toured an aircraft carrier, and saw a plantation, and Fort Sumter....

    Disney World is always good.

Boston is very cool if you are at all curios about the early history of our country. Check out sites on the Freedom Trail. It is a red line of paint and brick that leads you to many of the historic sites including the Old North Church(one if by land, two if by sea) and the USS Constitution.

  • I love northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Lake Michigan has the best beaches and a Beautiful shoreline. In the Upper Peninsula there are over 300 waterfalls.
