What should I be taking into consideration if I want to move and live in the US?|119365

Things like organizing citizenship. How much I should be saving up.

What else should I be thinking about. I_m an Aussie and I want to move to Los Angeles to begin an acting career in about 2 years.

I want to be able to live there comfortable. Job wise I can take care of things. But what should I be thinking about so that the move is a smooth one?

  • Unless you are independently wealthy you will need a job + a work visa. You need a sponsor (employer) for a work visa - you can_t apply for one on your own.

Australians do have an advantage and can get an E-3 Work Visa (the _immigration support_ website is a commercial site):

Check with US companies in Australia and Australian companies with offices in the USA. For example, Hilton and Marriott hire international staff as interns.

Australian citizens can visit the USA for up to 90 days as a tourist, so you could travel for interviews _ tests if necessary.

Search _international exchange programs USA_ and there should be many links to programs that offer temporary and seasonal work in the US. Do carefully check any programs you might be interested in as not all of them are a good deal.

Another option is to go to school in the USA. UK citizens can easily get a US student visa and you MAY be able to work on-campus. Having a USA university diploma or certificate will make applying for jobs easier, and going to school in the US will help you decide if you really want to move here.

    Good luck!

  • You_d probably have to line up a steady job first and then get a work visa. Pretty hard thing to do for an actor. You might want to talk to an immigration attorney.
