What documentation do I need to drive through canada to alaska?|151366

Me and 2 friends of mine will hopefully be driving through canada up to alaska in the next few weeks. Me and one of my friends already have a passport, so we wont have problems, but the other friend does not have hers yet. She is 17 if that makes any difference. Do we only need passports to re-enter the US? Or will she need it just to make it into Canada? Thanks

  • If she is 17 she will need a passport book, a passport card, or an Enhanced Driver_s License/Enhanced State ID issued by Michigan, New York, Vermont, or Washington.
She will also need a letter of consent of her parents who allow her to travel through Canada.

  • Yes - get a passport to minimize your problems. And what the person above me said about getting written permission from the parents is correct - make sure that the written permission you get from the parents is notarized. The customs officials will probably reject the written permission if it is not notarized. Any bank should have someone who can notarize the document - your friends parents need to sign it in front of the notary at the bank for it to be accepted and properly notarized.

I_m a Canadian living in the U.S. and have to get written and notarized authorization from my wife to take my kids into Canada if she is not along. Concerns about child abduction these days (even 17-year-olds) is why they do this. It doesn_t matter if you_re travelling on to Alaska. You_re entering Canada, and you have to follow their rules.

  • Passports are required for everyone 16 and over. See 1st site to read the law and 2nd site for all passport application info. Takes 4 to 6 weeks to get a passport, and you need to plan on the 6 weeks. She can get a passport in 3 weeks if she pays the expediting fee and express mail fees. She will need parental permission.

  • They_re usually very strict about people entering the US. She probably needs a passport...but at least a birth certificate and such.
