It takes a almost three days to cross the United States by rail. Railfares are comparable to airfares if you don_t mind sleeping in your seat. Sleeping rooms increase fares substantially. Amtrak offers special USA Rail Passes for international visitors.

I traveled via AMTRAK from Charleston, WV to Los Angeles, CA and it took about 3 days. The scenery along the way was incredible, making the journey very worthwhile.
