What is the brown squirrel-like animal we kept seeing on the side of the roads in Hawaii?|111717

Looks like a squirrel, looks like a ferret, but brown, and scurries in front of cars on the sides of the road. Is this a squirrel unique to the Hawaii area (we were staying in Kona on the Big Island) or some other type of animal? we were curious!

THANKS!

  • Mongoose. They_re everywhere here and they_re super smart too. Steal your lunch right out of your golf cart if you_re not careful.

  • LMAO! you don_t know what a mongoose is! that_s funny.

  • Funny you should ask. I was just research those animals. Apparently, they are minature cows that were developed there. Several had escaped serveral years ago and reverted to a hairier form.

Yes, they do look like squirrels. It is amazing how small they are too ! There, they call them _Small Foots_.

  • Mongoose is indeed what they are, and they were brought to hawaii to control pests, but as human interactions often do, it failed, and now the mongooses are the pest!
