How much different is the secnery around I-15 from Death Valley?|146385

In about 6 weeks I_ll be driving for the first (and maybe only) time from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. I_m considering diverting to Death Valley, but that_ll add hours of driving time.

Which leads to my question: How different is the scenery around I-15 from what_s in Death Valley? Is it pretty much the same, or is Death Valley worth the extra effort?

Thanks!

  • Death Valley is worth the time to drive through, but it will add hours to the trip. I suggest going past Bad Water ( lowest place in Northern Hemisphere) for photos and stopping along the scenic vistas( turn outs and parking spots available) just to know that you have seen some of the most unique desert views in the world.
I would avoid the tourist trap run by a private company, called Furnace Creek. Take photos, don_t leave money there! Have a memory filled trip!

  • First time I went to Vegas I made a side trip to Death Valley. Frankly I was disappointed. The scenery as you travel from LA is every bit as spectacular and frankly it is a heck of a detour to see more desert and a few famous though dull landmarks. If you want to do it take a side trip from Vegas as there is a heck of a lot of traveling involved. Scotty_s Castle is about the most interesting place in there. I wanted to see Zabrisky Point and all there was is a worked out bauxite mine and more desert. It is remarkable for being below sea level in parts but that is hard to tell on the ground. Much more interesting is a trip to the Hoover (or Boulder if you prefer) Dam and the lake.

  • Death Valley is wild but it is a long day trip, leaving early if you want to see everything from Scott_s Castle to the lowest place on earth. It is basically desert and more desert with Pahrump inbetween. I would not want that drive during a trip to Vegas and I live in Vegas

  • You have got to see Death Valley and while you are at it on the Calif side go up the 395. To view what you will see go to vegasnature.com and click on Death Valley and everything else in the third row. They are all wow!
