What are the typical weather related natural disasters for the Winston-Salem of north Carolina?|189528

I am considering relocating to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and i would like to know what sort of natural disasters are common for this area? (I.E. floods, fires, tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc..) I_ve never lived anywhere but CA, so I am unfamiliar with other weather conditions and climates, and would appreciate personal comments from people who actually live in or have knowledge of this area. Thank you so much!

  • It_s very un-California like there. Geographically the city and surrounding area is transitional, going from piedmont east of Winston Salem to mountains north and west of the city.
You won_t find mudslides, large out of control forest fires or earthquakes. Tornados are quite rare and hurricanes have passed through but in a greatly weakened state that creates relatively minor damage. The only relatively routine _disaster_ are winter ice storms. Winston Salem is in a _belt_ that runs across the northern part of the state that is more prone to ice than snow during the winter. About once every few years there_s one that wreaks havoc in terms of power outages, etc which can last a couple of days in some areas. All in all, you_ve picked a great place to live, and it_ll be a nice change to not have the worries of California disasters to think about.
    Good luck!

  • The above poster is correct..the occasional ice storm and some thunder storms are about it for Winston and surrounding areas. Not a bad place to live. We relocated to NC from CA several years ago. Best of luck to you.
