Can I have a happy vacation in LA without a car?|158424

Me and my best friend are staying in Los Angeles for 3 days in March 08 but we don_t have a car and we_re planning to use the public transportation. Is it good enough or do you think we_re going to have a big problem to move around the touristic area? What about night time?

We_re staying in Santa Monica and we_re planning to go to walk of fame, wicked musical, hollywood sign and stuff around. We_re not planning to go do Disney.

If you_re only staying three days, I think you should have your source of transportation. L.A. is very spread out, and if you want to have lots of time for fun and your freedom at the same time....rent a car =)

a car would be good. You can take the Santa Monica Big Blue Bus to one of the subways stations in Hollywood and take the subways from there.

Well, if you simply stay on the west side of town around Santa Monica, you may not need a car to enjoy yourself. However, LA is such a huge place, with so many cool things to see in different parts of the city, that to hole yourself up in Santa Monica and parts of Hollywood would not really give you a real feel for the city.

Like everyone else has said, save up your money and rent a car.

Yeh, I suppose it could be done. You need to be able to connect the Wilshire bus route with the MTA red line. The nearest station connection is at Wilshire and Western. If you do that you can get to Hollywood and Highland and Universal Studios in N. Hollywood. You can see but not get to the Hollywood sign anyway...It_s closed off....Preferred way is by car and you could split it 2 ways....If you had a car you could go to Malibu and more of the studio tours. Mobilemark may have some suggestions....

and the Santa Monica buses day pass is $2.50 (3.50 if you wanted go into downtown on their express)(Santa Monica
basically operates on the westside)
a lot of tourists do use public transit and do quite well

Hollywood Blvd has improved a lot, but I_d still be careful taking the subway around that area.They_re trying to bring people to that part of the city and it still has a way to go.

I can get around by bike in the daytime because from Hollywood to Santa Monica is not that far of a distance, but you do have to watch out for drivers who are doing everything else but driving. It was great to take pictures from a bike because if you_re in a car you either have to walk really far to get the photos taken or snap pics while you_re driving. Really easy to go into the high end neighborhoods because if you have a car you can_t stop. The old mansions down south are by far nicer. I wouldn_t recommend going up the back roads because they_re extremely hilly and wind a lot. but you do see bikers on there. A few celebs jogging and walking the dog too.

I don_t recommend Pacific Coast Highway as a bike route unless you_ve taken a drive up the road to see where work is going on.

No, the real question is... can you have a happy vacation in LA WITH a car? The traffic is horrible. As in, you may be on a six-lane freeway with traffic stopped in all six lanes. Also consider how brave a driver you are. This would be the worst possible place in America to drive, and if you don_t know where you are going you can be in a super nice neighborhood and then turn a corner and be in a really, REALLY dangerous area. Parking is another issue- it_s extremely difficult to find parking on the street side, and if you have to opt for a parking garage it is very expensive.

But, having said all that, I will agree that LA is so big that it really is almost impossible to see it without your own vehicle. I have taken the bus, but it was difficult to find the right one and they are not always running on time. A taxi would be a better option, in my opinion- expensive but less stressful.

Yes you can! Take the Metro Red Line from downtown to Hollywood (with a stop at Universal Studios). Or take the Metro Gold Line from downtown to Pasadena to see Old Town. You can also take the Metro Blue Line from downtown to Long Beach (hint: stay in downtown, very convenient access to metro rail!). And, if you want to go to Santa Monica, take the Metro Rapid 720. The Rapid only stops once every mile; and you begin your journey in.......downtown.

Rent a car. LA is just too big and spread out. It will give you the most safety and freedom to roam about. Just because of its sheer size, you_ll find that public transit in LA is not very effective. The only ones who use it are people who have no other means of transporation.

its doable but it might take longer to get around (why do you think everyone here has a car)because LA is pretty spread out.

I live in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky (Lawrenceburg/Harrodsburg/Versailles area.) I have tried involving myself in community activities where I live. I have waved at and tried to strike up conversations with my neighbors.

As it turns out, unless you were raised here, it_s hard to be accepted or even acknowledged. My neighbors are unpleasant, sour, and one of them even flipped me off the first time I waved at him. In retail establishments, even if you ask the cashiers how they_re doing with a smile, they do not respond in kind. Bunch of jerks...

There is much more southern hospitality in Louisville, where I_ve lived before and will be moving back to in August. I can_t wait!

you_ve got my permission to get out. I_ve lived in those towns where you_ll never really be a local but the people were still friendly and tolerant. I liked kentucky when I was there, nice people great food and beautiful woods and rivers. We were in the area south of Hendersen for the 18 year old girls softball nationals. Guess some towns will just never be home.

You can be unhappy where you live no matter how hard you try. My Aunt lives in Kentucky and she literally hates it there. She_s tried everything...she loves to garden but can_t do that because too much clay in the soil...ARGH...so she_ movin_ back to Kansas!!!!
Actually it_s also what you make of it too...Sometimes...you just can_t adjust or fit in for a number of reasons...Some small towns are like that.

I am sorry to hear about your experience.

I don_t think it matters where you are, where you have moved from, or where you live. A smile is a smile, and is a warm and genuine effort of friendship. I don_t blame you for harboring such ill feelings about such people and deciding to move away from them. I don_t think I would ever be comfortable living with those types of people, or wanting to expose myself to that type of environment for any period of time. Life is already too short and the world is already full of grudgery. Go somewhere else where your kindness will be appreciated! God knows there is a shortage of that!

Absolutely. You already know you don_t belong in this town, and you have a plan to go somewhere else. BUT UNTIL YOU DO, you have a purpose for being where you are.

Maybe it is to connect with someone else there who doesn_t belong, or maybe it_s to show a bunch of small-town, narrow-minded people an example of someone who rises above all that and can show courtesy, warmth and humanity wherever they go.

That smile of yours may not be returned, but it will be remembered! You will never know how many hearts you touch, but you can know in your heart that you do. Then get the hell out of there...

Sure, it_s possible. I don_t think there are truly cities where people are friendlier or unfrendlier - that depends so much on the individual, but liking or disliking a particular area of the country? Sure, that happens all the time.

I_m going to Gettysburg this weekend for a trip. What places should I make a point to go and see while I_m there?

if you love to shop go to the outlets but if learning bout all the war stuff aint your stlye then you should drive an hour more to Harrisbug N chill there its pretty hott thats what me N my girls did we shopped in the outlets N headed to Harrisburg plus they have nice outlets in hershey pa which is only 10minutes from harrisburg

I saw a story on television about a girl named Jenny Wade. She died by a stray bullet from a sharpshooter while cooking for soldiers although she was supposed to be taking cover in the cellar. I think there is a Jenny Wade House Museum. She is one of only a very few women to ever be honored by Congress or something or other along those lines.......

There are a few nice museums too. There_s a fantastic fudge place and next door is the President_s Hall - where the 2nd floor shows replicas of all the first lady_s ball gowns. It_s neat. I used to ride my bike over the battlefield. I grew up about 10 miles away. Have fun!

When I was there I went on a ghost walk, it was a lot of fun.

I find G_burg fascinating, even though I_m not into history and I_m not a tourist. There is just so much history and tradition there, and you can_t turn around without tripping over a monument.

Go out to the battlefields and visit Devil_s Den. Its an interesting rock formation.

I_m plannin to move out off california and I am looking for a State where I can move that is affortable and nice to live in. I hate the cold and the extreme heat... but I guess I could take it, if the job payments are good. I need to work and safe up some money! Please help me! any ideas or suggestions?

Atlanta is an ideal place to live due to the cost of living and job oppertunities. Nice places to live in Atl include, Midtown, Little Five Points, Virginia Highlands, Buckhead Lenox, Marriettia and many more. Do some research; in south Atlanta in usually the cheapest but more crimes.
