My wife is arriving with an immigration visa and we have a 4 hour layover. Is this long enough or will we need more time?

If you dont have any issues with your resident card / Visa/ work permit, you should get through in 20 - 40 mins on a weekday and 30 - 60 mins on weekend.

That should be plenty of time, but it_s hard to say depends how many people are flying and whether it_s a weekend, holiday or not. But no matter what you SHOULD be fine!

Every single movie I_ve seen, they portray Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Police as anarchists, troubled and crime/gang infested.

Is this really how LA is?

For a number of reasons, we get a bunch of questions asking what it��s like in LA.

First of all, I_ll tell you what it_s NOT like: It_s not like anything on TV. People watch shows on TV and think that��s what it��s like out here. The ��Real OC��, Newport Beach, The Hills, etc. Ever wonder why people in those shows never have to pay bills, do laundry, and are NEVER stuck in traffic? Because it��s FAKE. And the news doesn��t help either, since they know that sex and sensationalism sells. News flash: There aren��t running gun battles in the street. There aren��t shootouts every day. Also, you don��t see celebrities just walking down the street, all glammed up, or sipping a cappuccino at Starbucks waiting to sign autographs. We don_t go surfing during lunch hour.

Some sections are REALLY nice, others are ��ghetto��. Too many people have this vision in their head that LA is one or the other (either Beverly Hills or Compton). In fact, most of it is working class and middle class stiffs working to pay the bills.

You NEED a car to live in Southern California. We don��t have an effective public transportation like New York or San Francisco. One reason is that LA is larger in area than either of those, without a central hub where everything is. Back in the 1960��s, we might have done it. But by the time local governments got their act together, it was much more difficult to make a working public transit system. Also, unlike NY, we have earthquakes, which make it a little more difficult to build underground.

The freeway traffic is probably the worst thing about living here. The 405 is the worst. Know why they call it the 405? Because you go 4 o_ 5 miles per hour, and it takes 4 o_ 5 hours to get where you_re going. Freeway Traffic is bad from 6-10 AM and bad from 3-7 PM. I don_t know why they call it rush hour. It_s more than an hour, and nobody_s rushing, that_s for sure.

The gangs are the cause of many rumors. Keep in mind that there are gangs in any large town, in every part of the country. In LA, the gangs aren_t really downtown, they are in South LA, East LA, and north Long Beach (an extension of the South LA gangs, actually). And here_s the deal: Mostly, they just kill each other.

Gas is expensive in California. It��s about 20-30 cents above the national average.

Yes, gas and real estate are very expensive in SoCal. However, this would be the best time to BUY a house because it_s a buyer_s market right now. There are a lot of foreclosures, and too many houses on the market.

Yep, freeways are a drag, it_s smoggy in summer, and expensive to live here. Yet, if it_s so bad, why do we have thousands and thousands of people moving here?

Weather, Activities, Plenty of jobs, Beaches, mountains, deserts all within driving distance, and plenty of opportunity for those who have the skills and tenacity.

The job market is good here, mainly because there are SO many people here that it creates its own job market. Then there are MANY industries, including tourism, entertainment, shipping, manufacturing, etc. It��s an incredible economy.

However, it is not for everyone. Every time someone posts this question, you get the LA haters who post their bile and venom. A lot of them don��t know what they are talking about. Some people never even visit, and hate it on principle and stereotypes. Some actually visited once, and found out it wasn��t like it was on TV, and it certainly wasn��t Mayberry. And some actually lived here, and couldn��t deal with the expense, the traffic, or the somewhat impersonal nature of living in a large metropolis. To those I would say ��good luck�� to you wherever you are, but please don��t spew your hatred in this forum.

As for lifestyle, it��s rather casual. You work during the week, and then go do something fun on the weekend, so that you can impress your coworkers around the water cooler on Monday.

To summarize, LA a HUGE metropolis that really defies easy description. I live in one of the nicer suburbs, but the commute is no fun, often 1-2 hours each way each day. However, 340+ days of sunshine really helps. Yeah, it_s expensive. Mrs. Obviousman and I both have to work to pay the mortgage. But is it worth it? You bet!

As for the LAPD, think about this: Are they ever going to make a movie about regular cops who do their job well every day? No, they_re going to find those few bad apples and make a movie about that. Sure, you_ve got bad apples at LAPD. And other agencies, as well. But those are in the minority, but they get the biggest press.

I know quite a few cops, on different police forces. For the most part, they are decent human beings doing their job. There_s always a couple jerks, but that_s the way life is in general. I have found LAPD cops, in particular, to be very professional in my dealings with them. However, not everyone has that experience.

To an extent, yes. The police are probably more corrupt than in most other places, and violence (specifically gang violence) is rampant. That doesn_t mean you can_t walk down the street, just be careful where you do it. And stay the hell out of Huntington Park. I was robbed at gunpoint there and the cops told me it was my fault for being a white guy in a Hispanic neighborhood. And when I offered to give the detective on my case a list of numbers they called on my cell after they stole it, the detective wouldn_t take it. No desire to solve crimes there.

We_re planning a visit to Disney World in autumn. Everyone forewarns us to make character meal reservations early and the 180 day mark is fast approaching so we will soon be able to make reservations. Is there any best order for visiting the parks? We want to plan our character meals in the parks we_ll visit that day so we have to kinda pin down what order we_ll visit each park. Any ideas?

Far more important than the order of parks, is to pick the best days to visit each park. We use an itinerary and touring plans service that tells us which parks to visit each day, plans our day at each park, and even makes our dining reservations for us! We love Custom Mouse Plans. Thanks to the plans they make, we are always in the best parks and never deal with long lines. I highly recommend this service!
I will tell you that you should not pick the parks just based on which one you would rather visit on each day. When Custom Mouse Plans designed our itinerary, they explained that there are several factors that influence the crowd patterns at the parks. The itinerary they created was designed to have us in the park with the lowest crowds.

If you have preschool age children, I would recommend visiting MGM Studios first (I believe MGM is now called something else) so that they can enjoy the shows. My favorite park is Magic Kingdom because that is where everything is, but plan to spend more than one day at Magic Kingdom!

i always go to magic kingdom first. there_s really not a best answer, it_s your preference.

but magic kingdom was the original, and to me, the best. then epcot was built, then mgm, then animal kingdom.

if you have never been to disney world before, please go to magic kingdom the first day! your kids will love it and it_s a great park.

btw, my family and i loved the character breakfast with winnie the pooh at the crystal palace at the magic kingdom.

and also, the polynesian resort has a dinner show type thing that has amazing food. polynesian luau i think it was called. amazing food, and dinner show the kids_ll love.

Depends what you like. The kids will probably like Magic Kingdom best if they are little so I would do it last (except they may make you nuts being so excited to go there!)

Our favorite is Hollywood (formerly MGM) Studios. The kids will love Beauty and the Beast, Playhouse Disney, Honey I Shrunk the Kids Playground- and don_t miss the new stunt show- its AMAZING.. .

As for character breakfasts- I heard the one in the castle- Princess themed is good. Mickey is usually at the Contemporary_s Chef Mickey Buffet which is very good........... The hot thing now if you have little girls is Bibbity Bobbity Boo-tique. they do their hair and make up and you buy (or bring) a costume so they can be a disney princess for the day.......its really cute (but I hear pricey) Hey- what isn_t - ITS DISNEY!!! Be prepared to drop some dough but one thing for sure- you will make MAGIC doing it. HAVE FUN!!!

I tried living in Los Angeles but it is to much racism between the Black people and everyone else. I am looking for a bg city that has a lot to do and that does not look down on Black people the way Los Angeles does.

The best one is the place where you can best further your career. Because succeeding in what you choose to do for a living means succeeding in all other areas, too, including developing a fine wardrobe, getting a really comfortable apartment where you don_t have to be ashamed to invite friends over, maybe pay for a cleaning service so it stays presentable.

No matter what your color or otherwise background, you go where you can shine at what you do best, and then build a good, comfortable, sustainable lifestyle for yourself. And don_t forget to get to know some quality ladies of all different colors and backgrounds, and choose with your head, informed by your heart. Better still, find the right lady, and let yourself be chosen by her!

Of course, all of this presupposes you have chosen your career path, and where you can best shine. If you haven_t worked that part our yet, may I recommend you make that your focus. The current copy of _What Color is Your Parachute?_ would be a wise investment.

I_m a bit of a socially anxious guy in my late 20s. I just want to meet some nice people who aren_t stuck up and judgemental. I prefer to go out on weeknights and not on weekends because I am intimidated by large groups of people.
