So, San Francisco_s a great city. I went to SFSU also, but left in 2001. SF is one of few major cities where it_s almost all nice to live. There are certain areas you want to avoid, however: The tenderloin in downtown SF, South of Mission as well as mission, Hunter_s Point aka HP.
Some of the nice areas in SF are the Richmond district, Sunset, the Presidio, near Golden Gate Park, Buckingham (which is right near SFSU and the Stonestown Mall). Generally, anything east of 101 is what you want to avoid.
There are a lot more rentals in the Richmond and Sunset areas, and tend to be cheaper because of how far they are away from downtown, and the weather.
There are some very nice, very safe areas in the Mission district. (As you move south, it becomes the Ingleside district, which can be sometimes dicey.)
Yes, avoid the Excelsior, Hunters Point, parts of Potrero Hill.
Some people say avoid the Tenderloin, but while it is kind of seedy (hookers and drunks abound), most of the crime there is property (car break ins, etc.). Many families live there as well.
I don_t believe in _safe neighborhoods_. If you want to walk to school you could try the apartment complex on Holloway by campus.
sounds like you_re an inner sunset kinda gal though. look into that neighborhood.
