Any suggestions? Nothing that is ridiculously expensive. We will be flying out of DFW.
Another recommendation would be to try Crested Butte. It_s a little bit longer drive than the major resorts along I-70 (Vail, Aspen, Beaver Creek) but they do offer free lift tickets in December, so if you don_t mind the drive, you could save some money there, as well as have less crowds.
And Wolf Creek is probably my favorite place to go skiing. The snow is unbelievable, and it_s never crowded. But you_d have to find a place to stay in nearby Pagosa Springs and drive (15 miles) to the ski area. The Springs Resort has mineral hot springs on-site which are fantastic. You can even walk right into the San Juan River!
Good luck and have fun.
Most of the other places are really great-if you already know how to ski! Take Aspen for example. That is a great place for beginner to kill themselves! Monarch mountain has great skiing, much cheaper hotels, and a great ski school. Add short lines and you have a
perfect pace for beginner.
I took my new bride there on our honeymoon because she had never skied before. Great choice.
The down side was we drove about 3 hours to the slope from Pueblo. I think that this was actually one of the best parts of the trip, but some people hate the drive. We ended up staying in Canon City for 2 days of skiing and one day of site seeing. Royal gorge is beautiful. Then we drove through San Isabella National forrest and stopped at Bishop_s Castle. Ended up in Roudiso NW for 3 extra days.
