Start with Googling the heck out of Philly...I_ve lived here for 8 years and I still find interesting stuff that way. Also, check out the Philadelphia Weekly, the CityPaper, the Metro and phlly2night.com.
There_s obviously a ton of history in Philly, and while it_s definitely not all in one area, there_s a concentration of it in Center City, especially as you head towards the River...Old City, Society Hill, Independence Mall, etc.
There are plenty of tours, including one...I think it_s called the Big Bus...it_s a double decker bus that I see ALL OVER the city, so I_d guess that it_s a pretty extensive tour. It will be hotter than heck this week though...today (7/17) it_s supposed to reach 100, and it gets humid around here, so be ready and pack plenty of light clothes. At least with that double decker bus, the top level is open air, so maybe you can catch a breeze that way.
You may just want to go to the tourist center at Independence Mall. That should be the best bet because they_ll cover every kind of thing you_d like to see, not just the Independence Mall, Constitution kind of things.
Betsy Ross_ House
South Street for people watching
Art Museum (for art and the steps from the Rocky movie)
US Mint tour
Or head to the Imperial Inn in Chinatown, I love their food.
