to play it save I always say about a hour
(it could be faster depending where in Santa Monica you want to go and where you start your trip
(like if you started it from Highland and Hollywood
it would take longer because you will have to transfer to another bus to get to Santa Monica
but if you board a bus at say Santa Monica and Fairfax
and wanted to the 3rd street promenade then the bus ride
(since its one bus would be about 25-30 minutes)
as for getting to Malibu
I would say a hour and 1/2
