How much should a person make in order to live in L.A.? What is a good starting salary?|120693

I am a single college grad and just landed an interview in L.A. I don_t live near there, I am from the Midwest, and I just wondered what would be a good starting salary? I will have to move out there, pay for a car, pay a security deposit, and pay for an apartment/food, etc. How much should I hope to make to live comfortably as a single young adult?

  • Most people who ask this question are unprepared, unrealistic, with no money, no experience, no skills, (no visa), and no plan.

Next, you need a plan: First item on the agenda is rent. A decent 1BR apartment in LA currently goes for $1200, give or take. Nicer areas and areas closer to the beach are much higher. Don_t expect to move to Santa Monica and get an apartment on the beach for that much. Or Toluca Lake, or Beverly Hills.

Next, you will need a car. Los Angeles is VERY spread out, and train service is extremely limited. If you don_t have a car, you will have to take a bus, which takes 3 times longer to get anywhere than a car.

All told, it generally takes about $3,000 per month to live here. If you don_t have a job that pays that much or skills that can get you that kind of job, stay where you are. If you are unskilled and work for minimum wage (or for tips like bartending or waiting tables), you_ll only make about $1200 per month.

And speaking of jobs, they are rather hard to come by now. College grads seeking employment are having a very tough time of it right now, since the job market is flooded with experienced people who were laid off. Unemployment is over 12% right now. Not exactly the kind of job market you want to move into.

Finally, you will need money. Landlords want first month_s rent and a security deposit up front. You_ll need money for food, transportation, utilities, etc. The consensus in this forum is that you need about $7500 to start out.

So there_s your plan. And please don_t tell us that you have dreams of being an actor or singer. That sets off another alarm. We already have a million (literally) wannabe actors in this town. Dont even get me started.

  • In order to live comfortably in LA, you must have a very well paying job, Because rents are very high here in LA, or generally speaking, in California. A 1 bedroom apartment would cost you about $1200 + at a minimum. And unemployment has currently reached up to 12%, so you will have trouble finding a well paying job. It_s almost impossible.

I will give you some generally safe areas in LA, they all cost money to live in, so don_t expect Cheap and Safe : West LA, Pacific Palisades, Westwood, Beverly Hills, Silver Lake, Burbank, Glendale, Encino, Calabasas, Toluca Lake,Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Altadena, South Pasadena, Arcadia, Glendora, Manhatten Beach, Torrance, Parts of Redondo Beach (there is still some crime up north of RB), South of Long Beach, Whittier, La Mirada. This should be a lot of the main areas to look at.

  • It depends. What is the job? If you are a business grad, you might get $30K. If you have an engineering degree, you should expect $55K.

Really, you need to make at least $30,000 a year to get by reasonably well and more would not hurt. When I first moved to LA in 2001 I was comfortable on the $59,000 a year they offered and lived in a really nice part of Orange County.
  • What is the best way to get to the North End in Boston, MA? And where would you recommend going?|185540

I want to travel by the T. What is the best way to get to the North End and what places would you recommend as a date place?

  • You could take the green line to Government Center, or the Orange line to Haymarket, which is even closer. I love the North End. My absolute favorite restaurant there is Giacomo_s on Hanover St. If you get there right when they open (around 5) you can usually go right in. If you get there later there is usually a long line. But, it is totally worth it. It_s a tiny place (hence the line) but their food is AMAZING and VERY reasonably priced compared to other restaurants in the area. Also, there is a liquor store right on the corner and if you go in there and buy a bottle of wine they will cork it for you a give you some plastic cups (something to do while you wait in line). The people who work there are sooo nice too. My friend had already eaten dinner and asked if they had desserts, which they don_t. When the waiter brought out our food, he also brought out a box w/ pastries from Mike_s pastry shop. He had walked down the street to buy her a dessert since they don_t have a dessert menu!!!

If you don_t want to wait in the line, or if you want something a little more intimate/romantic/upscale, I recommend Mother Anna_s. It is right on the corner of Hanover St. as you enter the North End. The food is FANTASTIC but a bit on the pricey side.

  • Haymarket is the closest station to the North End. For restaurants, I recommend Al Dente on Salem Street. For bakeries, Bova_s also on Salem Street is amazing and open 24 hours... Mike_s is the more famous and hyped up bakery, but Bova_s is a bit off the beaten path and much better. For entertainment, you can catch a show at Improv Asylum on Hanover Street.

  • AWww I was taken on a date there last weekend!! I love Boston! It was great. We took the T to (The GREEN LINE) Goverment Center. It was a lot of fun. Tons of shopping, and it had all the goverment stuff. Like Quincy Market. It was more than 10 restaurants in there, and tons of shopping!! The food was great. We ate lunch at the Original _Cheer_s_ bar. The Seafood place Salty Dog_s was alright. I didn_t like my meal but the guy I was with did.

Also, if you walk across the street to where the Boston Tea Party happened. I_m pretty sure you can maybe take another T from there and get to the (THE BLUE LINE I THINK)Bay side. The Goverment Center is a really great area though. truly. It_s beautiful at night as well. Right by the water there was a fantastic restaurant. It was beautiful all lit up,and everything. A little expensive though.. appetizer_s were about $15 - $20. haha

ALSO.. HERE_S SOME WEBSITES OF TOURS AND OTHER THINGS TO DO. BOSTON IS MY FAVORITE CITY EVER! I_M MOVING THERE IN FEBURARY. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR DATE AND YOU_LL HAVE A GREAT TIME.

  • I am graduating college and going into local law enforcement. What is a good city in Texas to work in?|135696

I dont really want to go to a huge city.Just a nice small to medium size town. Also I am in the national guard so I have to stay within 5 hours of Nacogdoches.Any ideas?

  • If I were you I would start looking for jobs, you might not have as many opportunities as you might think.

  • Why don_t you try Killeen. You would be busy, but the city is not too big. Killeen is connected to Ft. Hood, which will keep you busy with military personnal and since you are in the National Guard that would be even a plus.

What is the best way to travel from Las Vegas to Fresno California?|119035

We are vacationing in the Fresno area in October and are flying into Vegas. Does anybody have any thoughts on the best way to travel between the two? All ideas are appreciated

  • best way to get cheap air tickets

  • Nobody _vacations_ in Fresno!
Are you flying into Vegas because you got a cheap flight? Just rent a car at the
    airport and drive--it_s not
really that far. Use a major
car rental and just turn it in
    in fresno.

  • vacation in Fresno? are you on a budget or something? just go by car. but its a hot boring drive

  • the drive is about 6 hours. 15 south to 58 west in barstow then 99 north at bakersfield to fresno. not the most interesting drive but not bad if you have someone in the car with you. if time is not an issue the drive is a good choice.
if you want to fly you might be able to score some good deals. freson is a regional airport so you probably won_t find it on any of the big airlines. but regional carriers tend to be cheap when flying short distances.

  • Interstate 15 south to Highway 58 transition in Barstow. Highway 58 to Highway 99 North. That_s the general road route. If you_re flying then it_s LAS-FAT on several airlines.

  • Alligiant Air and United (United Express by Skywest), U.S. Airways (Express, and starting 09/02/07 mainline flights) all fly non-stop from Las Vegas to Fresno.

  • Allegiant Air (they have a web site) out of Fresno is an excellent airline, with very good prices to Vegas, non-stop.

If you drive, it_s interesting if you like the desert landscape. You also save money on a car rental in Vegas. I would not be in that city without a car, rental or my own. It_s way too spread out, and it_s extremely hot. Waiting for a bus or shuttle in the heat is horrible.

If you are in Fresno, do visit the Underground Gardens. That is an amazing and fascinating place, unique in the world. It also has a web site. It_s Fresno_s redeeming feature, in my opinion.
  • I an planning a trip to New York City next Thanksgiving can anyone give me some tips on were to stay?|129945

Also what is the best places to see. I am wanting too see the Macy_s Parade while there, any hotel you would suggest to make it easy to sightsee and see the parade.

  • Well, New Jersey is very cost effective and there is train service from the NJ coast to New York. In terms of hotels in NYC for the Macy_s parade, I would not be suprised if they are all booked up already.

good transportation system, train ,so u may stay away _ save little away

  • I was in New York for 4 days in July and stayed at the holiday inn on 57th street. It_s near Central Park It was clean and cheap and cheerful. Everything you need really.
  • We are looking to move to wyoming and my husband has been offered a job in Wyoming?|102989

We are not familiar with Riverside, Wyoming, but my husband has been offered a job there. Can anyone tell us about Riverside? We live now in a suburban area of Atlanta, biracial neighborhood and we love where we live, are there areas in Riverside like this or nearby?

  • The snow in Wyn doesn_t melt, it wears out. The entire state is at an average alt of 6000 ft, a lot closer to the jet stream, year round, so understand this, the wind always blows, It has been known to topple 18 wheelers on I-80. People watch snow getting blown through the keyholes on the front door. They call it a ground blizzard. It snows every month of the year, cept maybe July. Thats the good news. Get an indoor job, make sure it pays year round, and that it doesn_t sorta run out between Dec and March. Be sure to go there first, look around and obtain proper housing. There_s is no A/C, but get a real good look at your heaters. Make sure your new place has room for a car, sheltered, as in a heated, or at least electrified garage. It can be very tough on pets, you can_t let them out in minus 30 degrees, with a windchill of -60. Have your cloths ready. Talk to the locals, tell the new boss you_ll need a guide to successful living in an otherwise beautiful state. Live real close to work. good luck.

  • FYI, you will be treated differently because you_re not from there... you don_t belong...

You are moving the part of the country where machismo male egos are alive and well.. go to the local watering hole, and expect to see at least one bar fight... rodeoers, roughnecks (people who work on oil rigs) and ranchers are all MACHISMO folks...

some are great people from the salt of the earth and will treat you with respect, and some will not simply for the color of your skin...

Am not trying to be harsh to you... just honest... but you better be strong, stick to your guns (pun intended) and don_t take crap from anyone up there...

One of the awesome things about the area is the great proximity to the outdoors... mountains, mountains, mountains... biking, hiking, paddling, caves, hunting, fishing.. all of the wonderful beauty of the rockies will be at your fingers!
    good luck!

  • Wyomimg will be like living on the moon......
  • Whats the best way to travel from Berkeley to Davis via public transportation?|151713

please include the costs of the trip and how to get back!

    thanks in advanced

  • Davis Berkeley Shuttle

The Davis Berkeley Shuttle operated by TAPS runs twice daily on weekdays between the UCD campus and UC Berkeley. Only UCD affiliates may ride. You must reserve a seat ahead of time on their website if you plan to go home on a Friday - it_s always packed, oftentimes for more than a week or two in advance! The ticket you actually buy is not date specific. A one-way ticket costs $8.00, and can be purchased singly or in bulk from the TAPS office or the Freeborn ticket office, using cash or check. Although tickets are not sold on the bus, it often possible to purchase a spare ticket from some other rider.

  • You could use the shuttle that J7 talked about.

Or, you could take Capitol Corridor (Amtrak train) from Oakland BART station to Sacramento, and then the Unitrans bus to UCD.

  • Amtrack Capital Corridor different prices for students seniors certain days frequent riders etc call Amtrak get a train time schedule ask a desk clerk.
