What is the best place to live if Im working in Manhattan?|141380

I_m trying to figure out what borough would be a good place to live. I_ll be working in downtown Manhattan, on the corner of Hudson and Houston streets. I_m trying to balance price with commute time. Manhattan is pretty expensive so I_d prefer to live somewhere else if I can find a good place.

Looking at Google Maps real quick, I notice that Hudson and Houston Streets is 1 block from the Houston St. 1 subway station, and about 5-10 blocks, depending on which direction you walk, from the Spring St. C/E subway station and the West 4th St. A/B/C/D/E/F/V station. So you could look for apartments that are convenient to any of those subway lines but I think for downtown, Brooklyn would be your best bet - the commute would be marginally shorter. Hudson and Houston is also about 5 blocks from the Christopher St. PATH station, so Hoboken or Jersey City, NJ are also possibilities since there is direct PATH service. You could go further out in search of cheaper housing, but then you_ll spend more time on the PATH or subway each morning.

Try Jersey City or Hoboken, easy commute on the PATH train.

Jersey City or Hoboken = closest
Brooklyn = close second...of course brooklyn is huge...but from the trendy yuppie areas (Park Slope, Fort Greene, Boerum Hill), etc. you would have a short commute.

Don_t give up on lower Manhattan so quickly. There_s a lot to be said for saving the 1 hour commute each way _ the ability to stay out until 2:00 am without having to worry about how you_ll get home.

New Jersey would be your best value and as the others said, the path train makes it convenient to live in Hoboken and Jersey City, they_re very nice places. You_ll probably want to avoid Newark.

If you want to stay in New York, then Brooklyn would be your best bet. Queens is great, but if you_re working downtown, Brooklyn makes more sense.

As should be obvious, the farther away from Manhattan you get (and for any given city the farther away from public transportation you get) the cheaper the rent.

My friend that live in NYC has found some reasonable apartments in Queens, and it_s only like a 20 minute train ride to get where he needs to be, not exact on the location of his workplace but it_s a stones throw from Washington Park, close to NYU.

Right by the river you_ll find nice houses with Manhatten view and the air is much fresher there. Think you can get to downtown Manhattan in 30 minutes or so, by boat or bus.

What is the differance in the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Wild Animal Park?|113481

Which one of these parks is better for a 2year old (stroller will be in tow)? I want to go to both on our trip, but i think that will be too much for our son... we will be in southern ca for 6 days. Our 1st stop is disneyland, then we will travel to san diego and go to some of the attractions down there... im debating between Sea World, San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Wild Animal Park... What are your thoughts?

Go to the zoo. The Wild Animal Park is a valley that_s set up to look like an African plain, where the animals can roam around in a somewhat natural habitat. You could wander around for quite awhile at the Wild Animal Park and just see a bunch of native African species of shrubs or something like that, without seeing any animals. Also, someone mentioned the tram. They shut that down last year, because it was getting old and unreliable (it kept breaking down, stranding people in the middle of the park for hours).

The zoo is full of various exhibits that are packed together into a smaller park. It is hilly. But, you can start at the top and work your way to the bottom of the zoo, and then take a long escalator back up to the top. The zoo also has a petting zoo for kids, where they can harass ... er ... pet some barnyard animals. One thing, though: This year, the zoo stopped letting people bring in their own food (they want to make more money by selling their high-priced junk). So, expect to have to pay for food and drink.

Sea World has a bunch of ocean type of exhibits (pools of dolphins and stuff, as well as an enclosed aquarium building). But, mostly the big attraction is the shows. And, you spend a lot of time sitting in the sun waiting for and watching the next show, because the seating is uncovered. I think Sea World is better for kids aged 5 and older.

the Wild Animal Park and the Zoo are different. The cool part of the Wild Animal Park is the tram that takes you around the park, this is 1 hour long. . . .and the wait in line can also be 1 hr. . .the zoo is a traditional zoo where you walk al around the park and look at all the animals.

If you want to do less walking, then the Wild Animal Park is the one. But know also that depending on where you will be in SD, this can be a long drive as it_s inland past Escondido in North County.

With a 2yr old, I would also recommend Legoland in Carlsbad, close to freeway and fun for the whole family. Sea World is also a great option, they have shows with animals that are fun for little kids.

Do 1 not both. And I would pick the Zoo because you see the animals better and closeup. The WAP is about observing the animals in their _natural setting_ out on the prairee in other words...and most of them from far away, Plus the WAP is outside the city so it_s not very practical, whereas the ZOO is in the city center.

Definitely the SD Zoo. Sea World and the Wild Animal Park are both cool as well, however you can find all the animals at both of those places at the SD Zoo and the zoo is much larger in size.

Mostly what you have described will do the trick, but some sort of light jacket for the evening _ an umbrella will be good insurance. Usually that time of year the weather is pretty good, but it is towards the tail end of rainy season, so it_s better to be prepared/

Usually around 80 and 65 at night. It could be a little windy, so if you get cold easily, take a coverup or light jacket. It may rain during the day too...

Some great towns (not full of unfriendly yuppies that tend to clog cities) with lots of music and art scene... plus the great outdoors (which i think goes with art anyway)...

Personally, i would have to say Las Vegas, i live here, and if ur into arts and perfomances, we have plenty shows out here, umm VMA_s are held out here, Alot of concerts are held here every month, if u move to Henderson (town in Las Vegas) its a very safe community.

I am wanting to go to Las Vegas for my 21st birthday in 2 years, but I am wondering how much I need to save. I know that prices will change in that time, but I just wanted an estimation. I am not looking for the cheapest price, I just was just wondering how much others had spent. I am only intending to be there for a weekend, and I do not gamble much. I intend on staying in a nice hotel on the strip and flying in, probably in December. Any answer would help.

Well, this is what I do, I am not necessarily looking for the cheapest price but I fly and I do get package deals. I don_t rent a car there because I don_t think you need one, especially if you stay on the strip. I am a gambler, but you say your not, and I usually bring around 1000. cash with me. That is not including my airfare and hotel. That is just my spending money. If you like to shop and see shows then I would say at least 500. And if you are looking to be there when you are 21 then I assume you want to drink. That_s not cheap. Oh yeah, don_t open the water bottles in the hotel rooms. It will cost you around 8.00 just for a bottle of water.

Figure about 160 per night for the hotel on the strip. Budget about 100-150 per day per person for food unless you go nuts or go very cheap. You will gamble, budget yourself 150-200 per day for light gambling. Transportation for the weekend should be about $50. Other entertainment/drinking/clubbing could go 100, 200 or more per night depending on you.

You don_t mention if you are flying or where from so you have to figure that out but in 2 years, it will be more than now.

Throw in a couple hundred more for misc. and you should be close.

For one weekend, I_d think $500 would be the minmun, not counting the transportation to Las Vegas, and no maximum. Seriously. For example, there is a Ferrari dealership at the Wynn. The minimum price would be eating in coffee shops and and playing nickel slots, one nickel at a time, and not much else.
December is actually a good time to be there, as the slowest time in Las Vegas, and thus the cheapest, is between Thanksgiving and Christmas, except for the first week in December, which is National Finals Rodeo week.
Do a search for discount coupons, you can print some off web sites. Just don_t buy them on E-Bay, that_s a scam, as they_re the same coupons you can get for free in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas used to be known for bargains, while they_re not as easy to find, they can be found. If you can go midweek instead of the weekend, everything will be more reasonable too, as well as less crowded.

Come Sun thru Thurs for the best air and room deals when you finally reach 21. You should save enough for the room, which on the Strip could be around $200 plus per night. Plus you need food, drinks, tips, and the cost of a show or two. You can charge everything but drinks and tips.

I would plan at least $100 a day plus cost of room.

when i went a few years ago i paid roughly $600 for a flight and room Mandalay Bay...but that was about 3 years ago..with the soaring prices for fuel it could even be more..

if you get a group together to help you celebrate your special day it could be cheaper depending on how many is in your group
and December would be a great time to go bevcause fares are usually cheaper..

I would recommend staying at Motel 6. It is only about 45 dollars a night. Buy your airline tickets several weeks in advance from Southwest Airlines, or also you could come on Greyhound...much less. Also in Vegas _have fun ride the deuce_ only 5 dollars for a day pass of the bus that takes you up and down the strip.
