What are the differences of Britain and America?|166072

If I was to move from england to america, what would I notice about life there?

Nothing obvious like currency, or sides of the road, or no round abouts.

  • Mass media and the Internet have blended our cultures and we are no longer as different as we once were. Most of the differences in daily life would be subtle, or familiar from hollywood films.

The first thing you notice is the cost of living is less in the USA than in the UK - and far less than than in London. Another answer mentioned gasoline, which is currently about $3/gallon in the USA and is more than 1/liter in the UK. A one way bus ticket in New Orleans (where I live) is $1.25 and the same type ticket in London is 2 (currently a little more than $4).

There is no USA equivalent to the influence that the Continent has on the UK. The USA is more distant from other countries, except for Canada and Mexico. Canada is basically the same culture as the USA and Mexico only influences the southern areas of the border states.

Another answer mentions the size of the USA, and that means more than just extra time to get from one end to the other. There is an assumption of _wide open spaces_ in the USA that is impossible in the densely-populated UK. The USA also has a diversity of terrain (mountains, deserts, prairie, etc.) that can be staggering.

Socialized medicine is not a reality in the USA. Medical and dental care is probably better in the USA than in the UK, but you have to pay for it (via medical insurance). The USA has no national health scheme and one has to be very poor to qualify for Medicaid.

Americans are a highly mobile society and most people move several times in their lives. For example, only about 10% of San Francisco_s population was born there.

The mass media and the mobility of the USA society means that accents are not as diverse in the USA as in the UK today. A New Yorker and someone from Houston or Atlanta speak almost the same way. Someone from Manchester (in Britian) may be unintelligible to a Londoner.

Government officials and military officers swear allegiance to the Queen (or King) in the UK. In the USA, we swear to _....preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America..._. It is a subtle but important difference.

The UK banned firearms in the 1920s to reduce the chances of a Communist revolution. Firearms are a fact of life in the USA and ownership is protected by the Constitution. I agree with and support the private ownership of firearms - but we pay for that right with accidents and sometimes terrible incidents.

The drinking age in the USA is 21, even for beer and wine.

Americans get fewer vacation days than the workers of any other developed nation. Paid maternity leave is very rare in the USA.

Waiters in the USA make most of their income from tips -_service_ is very, very rarely included in the bill.

There is very little violence (almost zero) among the crowds before, during, or after sporting events in the USA. There are no _football hooligans_ or anything equivalent in the USA.

Americans may not be as orderly standing in line (standing in a queue), but it is is NOT true that line-jumping is commonplace or acceptable. Please do not follow the advice of That Wasn_t My Hand.

To conclude, someone from the UK would have no trouble with daily life in the USA, and the reverse is also true (except for driving...).

  • Humor and accents.

  • Having never been, I can only take the differences I see from your folk who skipped across the pond to the States. I don_t think you_d be too shocked by anything, there_s a different kind of football here, it_s baseball instead of cricket, and there are some dialect differences. For example, as a fan of the Denver Broncos, it is perfectly normal and acceptable to say that I _root_ for them, which means _cheer_ or _pull_ for them. I understand it has a completely different meaning in Jolly Ol_ England.

  • You guys talk funny. :)
Seriously though, it isn_t all that different. The food is better here, as is the weather (usually). I was a child when I lived in England, so it is hard to remember.

  • well there humor is more sublte from what I remeber. They also prefer football scoccer and not american football.

  • ummmm....... place!

  • distances/

  • The cultures are somewhat similar considering that America_s founders were from Britain originally, though there are some notable differences. Americans have a tendency to not wait in line in an orderly fashion, or as you say across the pond _queue up_. Don_t be surprised if you are, say, at the bank, or a ticket line for a movie, and everyone rushes the front counter at once and argues loudly.

This is not considered rude here, and in fact, is quite respected. If you move here and wish to blend in, I suggest cutting in front of the person at the beginning of the line and turning your back to them. They will admire your seemingly innate American virtue and will compliment you thusly.

  • Britain is the size of a postage stamp surounded by water.Where as the USA is a wide open plain. Also our fuel is 4 times more expensive so everything else is too.
  • What is the best month to visit Sarasota?|189272

  • I was there at the end of April, and it was really nice, in the 80_s.

How do you keep occupied on a 26 hour train ride?|106453

My mom, my sister, _ I (sister and I in our teens) are going on a train ride to see our cousins, from southern florida to new york. How do we keep occupied on such a long train ride? Is it going to be as bad as we think? It is from 5pm to 7 pm the next day. How do I look decent after the ride? What are some crafts we can do? Will we be able to sleep? What will keep us occupied?? Help!

  • The steady rehythm of the train will have you fast asleep. When you are awake, you_ll find those around you willing to have a chat. Enjoy the ride

  • Scotch + Vicodin = Sleep
Or, see how many times you can say _are we there yet?_ during the ride.
wear jeans so you don_t look all wrinkly, and take off your outer layer for the ride and set it where it wont become wrinkled. Extra deodorant, and a pillow are a must.

  • Don_t worry. Go to a Doctor and have him prescribe you some Clonazepam take a tablet 20 mins before you get on the train, and the next thing you know, is that you_ll be waking up in Canada if you don_t have someone wake you up in New York, before!

  • wow 26 hours is a really long time. you will definitely be able to sleep. if you have an iPod that will keep you occupied but only for a few hours. you could also try bring magazines with you to pass time. you also asked for craft ideas. i don_t have any but if you have a laptop you could bring that and check your emails or what ever. there are a lot of things you can do on the Internet!

  • on long rides like that, i usually sleep or play games or make up stories with my family.

    reading or electronics work too

  • iPod, iPhone, laptop, books, games with your family

  • every once in a while you could run up and down the aisles screaming _Bridge out! We_re all gonna die!!!!!_ also, make sure you have a cell phone with plenty of texts.

  • If you have a laptop with wireless internet service definately take it. Also, take your cell phones and any electronic device you have. If you have a psp, take it. Take a nintendo ds lite too. If you_re not interested in video games you can always do pictochat on there which you can enter a chatroom and talk to surrounding people.
  • What is the best hotel to stay in las vegas and money isnt a problem?|163583

I want to find the best hotel and i dnt want to go with the most expensive cos sometimes they dnt seem to be that great!

  • Venetian has a crazy ambiance, club, restaurants, shopping, poker room, and the rooms are very spacious also. went there for a convention and would love to go back..

Bellagio has a huge casino, huge poker room, crazy Garden they theme up every season, their cafe has delicious corn chowder and club sandwich..the rooms have a TV station that plays the music to the dancing fountains, which was crazy. Only thing i didn_t like was the pit bosses weren_t too friendly with comps

Wynn_s resort room was awesome flat screens in the bathroom, so you can watch while showering, room service was fast and well worth it, poker room kind of cramp, table games have emphasis on customer service and not the # of hands dealt.

    any 3 you_ll love

  • It all depends on what you mean by _the best_. If money is not a problem the most expensive will offer the most pampering that would be the Four Seasons. The cheapest room is around $400 per night all the way up to the Presidential Suite that can run tens of thousands.

On the other hand, if money were no problem for me, I would stay at one of the centrally located hotels but reserve one of their best suites with the best view.

    *

  • The Bellagio has the best free show in Las Vegas. Try some or all of their restaurants. You will not be disappointed. I enjoy their poker room. The art exhibit is incredible. Try the self guided tour. I always see the garden atrium as it is always fabulous. I recommend the Bellagio.

  • Romance : Venetian (suites), Pallazzo

    Gaming : Mandalay Bay, Bellagio

Luxury : Wynn, Bellagio, Trump (no casino)

Party and fun : Palms (suites are great), Mandalay Bay

    Rest and Relaxation: Venetian, Wynn

  • Wynn is overall the nicest, but Bellagio and Venetian/Palazzo round out the big three for luxury.

  • You can search and choose hotel information, rates and availability for free in over 200 countries world wide at my profile.

  • ya wynn is the most expensive and personally i thought it kinda sucked. I say Bellagio or the new Pallazzo are best

  • The Playboy Tower at the Palms, hands down.
Nothing comes close to the view or the luxury.

  • Bellagio, The Hotel at Mandalay Bay, Palazzo and Wynn.

  • The Bellagio (5 Stars!!!)

  • Mandalay Bay

  • Freshly built one. Least amount of bed bugs. I am thinking Wynn.

  • The Wyn

  • Good....Give me $200 and I_ll tell ya.
  • How hard is it to sneak into general admission at warfield theatre, SF, or any venue?|102160

i_m going to the love drunk tour on october 23 at the Warfield theatre and the best seats i can get are upper balcony :/ I REALLY wanted General admission but they sold out before i could save up money for tickets. So i_m thinking about sneaking into the general admission. how easy/hard is it? What are the consequences if i get caught? answer please!

  • Forget it Cindy. It is very difficult and you will get caught and ejected. Consider yourself lucky you have a seat and enjoy the show.
  • How early should I get to the train station on memorial day weekend?|114763

I_m in boston, and I have taken the train in 10 years? How early should I get there?

  • For Amtrak get there an hour and a half early. 30-45min is cutting it wicked close. It is Memorial Day weekend and a lot of people travel that weekend, which means longer lines at the Ticket pickup and purchase center.

  • If you_re taking Amtrak, you shouldn_t have to get there more than, say, 30-45 minutes prior. That should be enough time for ticketing and check-in.

For the purple line (commuter rail), you could buy your ticket on board.

  • Not sure which train you are talking about, but you can find all the schedules for Boston_s public transportation system (the T) at www.mbta.com
  • What is the infrastructure of Fort Myers and surrounding areas like?|112672

In terms of schools, public services (fire, police, hospital), and commercial prospects and jobs. What is this forecasted to be in the future? Is it forecasted to improve in these different areas?

  • For commercial projects and jobs it is a particularly hard hit area. Punta Gorda, a nearby town, was where Obama went to show how bad things were as they were among the hardest hit places in the country from the economy.

I know that they recently cancelled a multi thousand unit housing development that was to take place on Hancock Ranch. If that project ever gets going again than prospects will improve.
