How do you best spend seven hours in NYC around Christmastime?|177191

You are with five friends in New York in December and you have seven hours to spend there; what are the best ways to do so before your time is up (Rockeffeller Tree? Planet Hollywood/Hard Rock Cafe? Would Statue of Liberty and other things on islands/outside of Manhattan be too time consuming?)

  • Yes, Yes, definitely Rockefeller Center, 5th Avenue, St Pat_s Catheral, Top of the Rock or Empire State Building. Macy_s, Radio City Hall, 1/2 off Broadway tickets at Duffy_s Square. South Seaport, Chinatown,Little Italy, Greenwich Village and Times Square. Wow you are in for a treat.

Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island are great to visit but you need to dedicate the very least 4 hours to see both.

Here is a link to the sights in New York

    http://www.december.com/places/nyc/sites

    Have a great time.)

  • Rockefeller Center (tree and many other Christmas decorations) and while your there 5th Ave. Stores and Windows (38th St. Lord and Taylor to 58th Street Bergdorf-Goodman. After that Times Square. Actually you have time to see a Broadway play and see the decorations. Consider Radio City Christmas Show if you_ve never seen it, they do many shows a day so you can easily find a way to fit it in.

  • Forget the Planet Hollywood/Hard Rock Cafe stuff. There_s nothing NY about them. 99% tourists. Go skating under the christmas tree. Walk around Times Square. Eat in China town.....Do regular things. Not tourist things so much.

  • I would like to be in Rockerfeller Center snice u_ll be able to ice skate there with your friends...itz fun...Umm time Sq will kinds be fun as wellz lookin at those big plasma tV lol
  • How long should we stay at each destination?|187807

We want to go on a two week vacation. It_ll be two adults and a 14 girl and a 11 year old boy. We_ll be going to:

    Pigeon Forge, TN
    Charleston, SC
    Williamsburg, VA
    Hershey, PA

How long will we need at each to cover what we need to cover?

  • i would only spend half a day in charleston there is not alot to do there, willaimsburg 3-4 days, pigeon forge, gatlinburg 4-5 days and the rest in hershey
  • How long does it take to drive from Atlanta to Gwinnett?|160851

I would like to know how many hours does it take to drive from Gwinnett County to Atlanta? , and Gwinnett County to Dekalb County?

  • I drive from Lawrenceville to 5 points a few times every week. In good traffic it takes me around 34 minutes. during rush hour it can take 45 minutes to the worst ever was over 3 hours (stuck behind a jackknifed semi blocking all lanes of traffic).. normally it takes around one hour during rush hour.

Gwinnett and Dekalb share a border and from some points you can walk between in less than 2 seconds :) but Dekalb county is between Gwinnett and Atlanta. From Lawrenceville it takes me around 20 minutes to get to spaghetti junction (just inside Dekalb County if I take I-85) or about 25 minutes to get to downtown Decatur if I use US78.

  • atl - gwinnett -_ 10 minutes on interstate to 90 minutes - backroads to farthest edges

gwinnett and dekalb share a border, so 0 minute to 90 again

    double for rush hour

[be more specific about locations - dekalb and gwinnett are big counties, even atlanta is a big place]]

    wle

  • Run mapquest to get the route, and gauge your time. Though it wouldn_t take as long, I_d give myself an hour. (I hate being late.) One can assume there will be traffic during rush hour, and often at times when one would least expect it.

  • It really depends on the time of day. From Atlanta to Gwinnet during non-rush hour, I would say about 15 - 20 minutes. To Dekalb County, I_d say about 20 minutes.

  • It will take 30 mins to drive from gwinnett to atlanta. From Gwinnett to Dekalb, it depends on what part because you can take the backroad or take I-75 to I-20 E.

  • it actually depends on where you are.
half an hour from Gwinnett county to atlanta.

  • 30 to 45 minutes depending on the traffic.
  • How would I go about setting up an organization that walks kids in bad neighborhoods home from school in Chica?|158761

I was doing some volunteer work in Chicago Public Schools and was suprirsed to see how much gang violence there was. Lots of kids are scared to walk home from school b/c of being beat up, harrassed, etc.

I was thinking about trying to put together some type of group that walks kids home from school or walks kids from school to a local boys and girls club or something like this.

Looking for advice as to how to go about this.

    Thanks.

  • I think last school year there were parents and groups doing stuff like this? Here is an article on it

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/27/us/27c

There might be some names/depts mentioned there that you could speak to. Or CPS probably has some kind of safety/security department? They might know more about how to work this.

That or the individual schools you_d like to work with can probably help you figure it out at least partially? Some schools that had the programs last year are named in the article, you could always try contacting someone at that school and see if they can give you some help?
  • What city in upstate NY should I relocate to?|141094

I am looking to relocate back up nort(reside in atlanta currently). I am looking at upstate ny but I do not want to be in a small hick boring place. Some where with a decent night life, culture, and some kind of job market. A couple of hours from nyc wouldn_t hurt either.

  • I lived in Nyack, NY, for several years and I loved it!

It_s a great little town with a nice little downtown, but, best of all, it_s only, like 30 minutes from NYC, so, while on the one hand you live in a charming little town right on the banks of the Hudson River, on the other hand, if you_re in the mood to go into NYC, you can just hop in your car and go, and you_re in town in, like, a half-hour.

There_s a few other towns right around there that are nice, too, so, check it out, it_s the best of both worlds, a definite win-win situation!

Good luck, and the link below is to the webpage of their local newpaper...

  • Saratoga, Schenectady, Albany, Lake George, Troy are all near each other and always have something going on.

  • You might want to focus on finding a job first, and then worry about where you are going to live.
  • What is the cheapest and fastest way to travel from California to Lake Tahoe, Nevada?|150435

I thought about driving but it would not work. The drive is too far and I have a couple small kids. I checked flights but they are way too expensive. If you have any other ideas I would greatly apreciate it. Thank you

  • well, taking a bus with 2 small children wouldn_t be too much fun or too safe, I would think. You could drive if you stop every 1 1/2 - 2 hours for some _get the wiggles out_ time or stay at a Motel 6 in the middle of your drive. If you can_t afford to get to get someplace, maybe you shouldn_t go.... good luck to you and your children

  • Caifornia is a very big place and part of it is one step away from Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Where would you be travelling from? And BTW, cheapest and fastest are very different things.

This website explains all the ways you can get to Lake Tahoe (car, bus, plane, train)
  • What is the best place to live if you want to work at a zoo?|163897

Which zoo is the best to work at and is in a really nice neighborhood that isn_t too expensive?

  • Probably in Ohio. The San Diego and Columbus Zoos are constantly rated the #1 and #2 zoos in the USA. But I say Ohio over California for 2 reasons- the first is that the third best zoo in the US is the Cincinnati Zoo, so Ohio has 2 of the top 3 zoos within a few hours of each other. The other reason is that Ohio cost of living is so much more reasonable in Ohio over CA. There are plenty of neighborhoods in both Cincy and Columbus that you could afford. Good luck!

  • San Diego has the best and nicest Zoo in the country. The neighborhood around the Zoo isn_t too expensive compared to other parts of San Diego, but expensive is a relative term of course. There is also the SD Wild Animal park about 35 minutes north of downtown and the Zoo that is part of the Zoo as well and it has animals that roam freely out in the open. Also SeaWorld is right there too if you want to work with marine life. Plus you can_t beat the great weather and lifestyle in SD.

  • New Orleans

  • Aside from the aforementioned San Diego Zoo, St. Louis has an incredible (and free!) zoo.

If you want a _non zoo_ feeling - maybe a place like Busch Gardens?

When is disneyland the least crowded during Christmas Break?|173928

My family is going on a vacation to California during the Christmas Holidays and we want to know when it is the best time to go during them. We are also planning on going Six Flags: Magic Mountain and Universal Studios. When are those parks the least crowded. Are they more popular than Disneyland?

  • the best is on Super bowl Sunday. But if you must go on Christmas break try a Wednesday.

  • All the theme parks are usually crowded during Christmas break. I used to go with my friends all the time.

I would say during the week for sure... never on a weekend. A tuesday or Wednesday would probably be the best time to go.

Disneyland is probably the most popular of them all. It has 2 theme parks. Disneyland and California Adventure. Magic mountain is fun but far! Knotts berry farm isn_t all that exciting! Universal studios is probaby the least crowded place of them all! It_s not as popular anymore. Not much to do... good for a half a day. I find City walk (it_s right next to the entrance of universal studios) to be more exciting. Lots of restaurants, shops, and a movie theatre.

All of those places are great to go to if you_ve never been! Of course visit them at least once. Beware all of those places are super expensive. So if you want to save money... go to a near by market and pick up some lunch stuff to pack up for the day. If not, then spend away!

    Hope that helped!

  • Never!

  • I_ve beeen to Disney Land during christmas. Its very very cold and crowded, but their christmas parades are great to watch!

  • Disneyland is the most popular park of the ones you mentioned. The least crowded month for Disneyland is traditionally February.

Six Flags will probably be relatively uncrowded during Xmas. They are most crowded during summer. I don_t know about Universal, but I expect it will also be less crowded at Xmas than in summer.

Call the parks and talk to guest relations. They might be able to share this info with you.

  • There won_t be a time when this park isn_t crowded.....if you want the least crowded days go during the week when parents have to work but that_s still not going to exclude you from all the crowds.

As far are Six Flags and Universal Studios, the same rule applies. They are less popular but still busy nonetheless!

    Have a great time!

  • Disneyland is crowded no matter when you go. But try the week before Christmas. It shouldn_t be as crowded as the week of Christmas.
Magic Mountain and Universal Studios will be crowded too.
But try going to them Tues-Thurs. It won_t be a bad as going on the mon, fri or the weekend.

    Have a great time.

  • For Disneyland it really depends on when your Christmas Break is. The best time will be weekdays in the early part of December. After about the 17th it will start to get really busy, with the height of the crowds hitting from about the 21st through New Year.

Six Flags and Universal are not as popular as Disneyland. But even here the week between Christmas and New Years will be the busiest, but still more manageable than Disneyland.
  • Where is a good weekend getaway place within a couple hours of Chicago?|171838

I live near Chicago and am looking to get away for a weekend in early April. I want to drive and don_t want it to be any further than a couple hours away. I would like a place with nice hotels, lots of shopping, restaurants, spas, etc. I haven_t lived in Chicago for that long so I don_t know much about visiting Wisconsin, etc. Thanks for your help!

  • There really isn_t anywhere else to go in Illinois unless you really love corn lol. Go to Wisconsin Dells they have tons of hotels and indoor water parks. Kalahari Resort is the best I heard. They have some pretty cool little shops there as well. Get the vacation guide to see what_s there and to help you plan and stuff.

    http://www.wisdells.com/WisconsinDellsVa

  • I_m not sure if you have any children(By the question is seems as if you do not), but the Dells is a lot of fun(even if you do not have children). I really like the Wilderness. It has indoor and outdoor water parks, restaurants, and a spa inside the resort.

Gurnee has an outlet mall and Six Flags would not be too far away.

If you do have children, The National Mississippi River museum is a great place to go. They have a hotel with kids indoor water park along the river. They just opened the new casino, Field Of Dreams is close(not sure if they would be open yet), 4th street elevator, downtown shops, Mine of Spain,etc..that would be more on the 3 hour range.

  • Galena. Great hotels, nice shops, restaurants, history.
  • How to get Six Flags tickets from new york port authority?|144589

I want to go to six flags hurricane harbor with a bunch of friends in a few days. I was just wondering when and how we can get the tickets.
Is it possible to get them the morning we leave? (Saturday at 9am)
Or do we have to go in advance to buy the tickets.
What times are the port authority open to sell tickets?

    Thanks a lot.

  • The links below are to webpages all about going to Six Flags via NJ Transit from the Port Authority in New York...

  • NJ Transit bus route #308 will take you from the PA Bus Terminal to Six Flags. The bus departs from gate 324 at 9:30am and runs express, making one stop at Newark Penn Station before continuing on to the amusement park.

A combined park admission and round-trip bus fare package will cost you $53 for adults ($38.50 for children 11 years and under). This is a lot cheaper than purchasing a round trip bus ticket and then paying for general admission at the park.

You can purchase the packages at any NJ Transit Ticket Windows inside the Bus Terminal.

I hope this information is very helpful.

    Good luck

  • In your opinion which is the best aquarium in the United States?|148344

In the past couple of years I have visited the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, the National aquarium in Baltimore and another one in NYC (near Brooklyn) . I had also visited the Chicago aquarium about 10 years ago. So far Baltimore tops my chart. How about you?

  • I_ve traveled throughout the U.S. and have been to many Aquariums. My favorite one is the Florida Aquarium in Tampa. I was there most recently in January 2009. They have fantastic exhibits and behind-the-scenes tours. I was able to see African penguins and hold and touch one. He was so cute and he brayed for me. I also learned plenty about penguins. It is a great program and I highly recommend it. They also have a penguin promenade which they do twice a day. Two African penguins come out on a red carpet and you can ask questions about them and learn plenty there, too. That program is free, the other is extra. With the promenade, you can_t touch the penguins. One of them pecked at my camera and my shoe. They are adorable!

The Florida Aquarium also has a great Coral Reef display with a tunnel you can walk under, a coral cave, and a coral farm. The shark feeding they have for the public is interesting. They also have a shark feeding behind-the-scene tour.

More on the Florida Aquarium: I was able to feed the stingrays when I was there. They have an American Crocodile on display in the Wetlands section. This area also has a Mangroves section and a Saw Grass Marsh section, in which they had some river otters. They also have a Swim With the Fishes Program and a Wild Dolphin Encounter. Many programs there to keep you busy. There are so many beautiful species of fish on display throughout the aquarium. They are fascinating to watch. This is a _must see_ aquarium.

I_ve been to Shedd Aquarium many times (I live in the Chicago suburbs), The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Aquarium of the Pacific, Scott Aquarium at The Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, and many more, and this is by far the best one I_ve been to yet.

  • Baltimore is supposed to have a great aquarium.

I haven_t been to New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina, but I thought the aquarium there was excellent.

The Dallas World Aquarium is really cool and even more amazing since it is privately owned.

I live in Long Beach and I think the aquarium is OK. Unfortunately the people that attend it are dirty and leave trash throughout the facility.

  • There is a great Aquarium right next to the Hamptons on Long Island, New York. It is called Atlantis Marine World Aquarium. Its in Riverhead, NY(its a town mostly on the North Fork of Long Island). Its Great. If you want to visit or learn more about it visit the site that I posted below. New York Aquarium is also great if you want to learn more about it follow the link I posted below.

  • Monterrey California. Lee

  • I_d have to say the one in Chicago, but I haven_t seen the one in Baltimore.
  • What are some cool things to do in America or Canada over the summer?|190184

What are some cool things to do in America or Canada over the summer? I have a few weeks vacation and I_m interested in doing something cool. I_m also open to visiting nearby islands easily accessible by boat/ship.

  • Definatly go to the beaches in Florida or go surfing in California. Depending on how much money you have, you can take a cruise to the Bahamas at the beginning of the summer and possibly go diving. It really depends on what you are into. Like gambling and casinos? go to Vegas. Like broadway shows? go to New York. Chicago is fun to go and catch a cubs game. you could go visit amusement parks, national parks, museums, etc, etc, etc. The list is endless.

  • Canada and America are HUGE... so you would have to be a bit more specific as to where you want to go to get better advice.

However it sounds like you maybe want to do something _cool_ or different.. and nothing is better than a cross country road trip.
If I were you I would spend some time in California.. take in LA and San Diego and all the cool stuff they have to offer (Hollywood, Disneyland, Great clubs and nice beaches). Then rent a car and drive up the coast and do some camping in Oregon where are you bound to see some cool wild life and meet some cool people. Speed through Washington, climb Mount Baker if you have time. Hit Vancouver for some great Sushi and even greater and friendlier people. Then finish by taking a ferry to Vancouver island. Hit up a little known surf town called Tofino. The surfing is cold but there are tons of beaches, nature trails, and inexpensive tours to ocean caves, whale watching, and hot springs. Its lots of fun.

  • Well, in the United States there are many different beaches. I would visit the beaches in Florida. You can go surfing in CA. Or,you can visit Alaska, its very beautiful. If you want to visit an island visit the Hawaiian islands they have many volcanoes and they have beautiful beaches, or Puerto Rico a territory.

  • well i live in canada so...you can go to the hundreds of beaches - they_re really pretty in PEI :) uhmm yeah...
  • How long does it take to drive from San Francisco to Vallejo?|163228

My family is taking a trip to San Francisco to visit some relatives. My mom said she would pay me if I drove my little sister to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and that it_s not too far. How long does it take to get from San Francisco to Vallejo?

  • Take the Bay Bridge, then I-80 East and you will go right by it. Depends on traffic, but figure 45 minutes minimum, 1hr 30mins max.

  • during afternoon rush hour on I-80 it would take well over an hour

  • as said before, about 45 min to an hour. It_s a nice drive when there_s not a ton of traffic.

  • 45min

  • that depends entirely on the time of day. If you are talking non rush hour commute, 45 minutes. Rush Hour heads from SF to Vallejo in the afternoon starting at 3pm-ish.

Mileage wise it is is 32 miles and supposedly 33min according to yahoo maps. Which I suppose you could do in the middle of the night with no cars on the highway.

Is it too cold in February to have a good time in Myrtle beach?|132360

My wedding anniversary is in February and we were looking for a good place to go. Is it too cold? Does it get even colder in Myrtle Beach because it is near the water?

  • It is too cold at the beach. Some days it is in the low 40_s. That is too cold right?
  • Whats the cheapest way to go to Ethel M Chocolate Factory from Strip?|135344

We are a group of 4 - all in ages 25-30. Going Las Vegas for 3 days.
We were thinking to go to Ethel M Chocolate Factory and Botanical Cactus Gardens.
Do you think it worth going there. and what will be the cheapest way to go. If it helps we do have monorail pass for one day and were planning to buy a $5 bus pass for at least one day.

  • The Monorail does NOT go anywhere but back and forth on the east side of The Strip between MGM Grand and Sahara.

A bus ride would be at least two hours each way, having to go Downtown, transfering at least twice or more, if a bus goes there.

Ask the bellman or concierge for a tourist bus that goes there. Ethel M is in Henderson, which is 25 miles away. You will see the factory but they make the candy at night but you could see them packaging it. You will get one piece of free candy in the gift store. BTW Ethel M sells candy with real liquors in it like brandy with cherries. The Botanical Garden is nice but will be very hot if you are there in the summer.

Your other choice is to rent a car for the day and drive, not a bad drive, too.

  • Honestly, I wouldn_t waste your time. I took my family there when they visited. It took all of 10 minutes to walk through the _factory_ (one hallway) and 15 minutes in the gift shop. The gardens are ok but nothing spectacular. It_s not worth the trip. There is an Ethel M candy store in the M_M_s shop on the Strip and there are others in various casinos. If you want to try the chocolate, stop at one of those and save the cab fare.

Addition: You CANNOT walk there from the Strip. The actual factory is in Henderson, not walking distance.

  • It is definitely worth the visit. You will love it. Getting there is easy. You can either take the bus heading south on Sunset or if the weather is cool enough, you can actually walk there from the strip. Here is a map to Ethel from the strip.

  • What is the name of that green bridge in Pitsburgh?|147844

We went over this bridge when we passed through Pittsburgh. It was on 79 and there is a long island in the middle, and then another shorter bridge.

  • That bridge is simply I-79 and the island you drove over was Neville Island which is below the bridge on the Ohio River.

  • Coors Mountain...get that rocky mountain high

  • How do people dress in San Francisco, especially students and young professionals?|147447

I_ll be an interior design student so I want to look creative yet professional, but I_ve heard it_s a really casual city. Any thoughts?

  • I_m a student in the city and I would suggest to wear something that you_re comfortable in as long as it_s appropriate. Give yourself some time to get a feel for what other people in your school are wearing. Check out the local malls and see what_s hot right now. Good luck with school I wish you the best!

  • Thanks for your help, everyone :-)

  • The basic uniform that will pretty much let you go anywhere in San Francisco, from school to five star restaurants, is: nice clean designer jeans, black turtleneck, classy designer blazer or jacket, really cool boots, designer sunglasses. And with the weather in SF, this works any time of year.

  • yeah pretty casual.it also depends upon the weather.the weather is pretty tricky.one day it will be extremely hot and the next it could be raining.

  • It_s fairly casual outside of the banks and judiciary, though not as casual as in the tropics (Hawaii, Florida, etc.) This has more to do with climate than anything else.

So be aware of _hot weather_ clothing, which may look out of place during a business meeting. But practically anything else is fine.

Although former Mayor Willie Brown (well known for his Fedora hats, silk ties, and Brioni suits) briefly tried to impose _order_ back to the fashion industry by arresting nudists, asking restaurants to enforce dress codes, and ordering city workers to always dress up in their uniforms at work...these efforts were discarded the moment he left office. Very typical for San Francisco.

Only lawyers and executives wear suits. Although there are a lot of them in San Francisco, they_re of no consequence for the public cause they tend to stick to other lawyers and executives -- keeping mostly to the Civic Center and Financial District areas. Some high-end restaurants in these areas have a dress code, but most do not.

  • Very casual, in the financial district they wear a lot of suits, but as a student, you_ll be fine with casual. The other day I was walking down to Market St. and about 20 naked people riding bikes rode by, so if your dressed your doing good.

  • Business casual.

What is a Good Spot to go camping in the Northwest Indiana aera?|129098

My friend and I want to go camping, we wanna keep it close and, cheap with gas. So what are some good spots that we can set up a tent and just camp? In the northwest indiana area.

  • The nicest place would probably be the Indiana Dunes State Park.

  • These outta be cheap:

...and most of these are parks, but some offer recreational services which wouldn_t cost anything if you were planning on just setting up a tent and camping:

  • What do we do with a dog when visiting Universal Studios in LA?|160042

We_re going during the winter and we_re taking our dog with us. What should we do with him the day we_re in the park?

  • Universal Studios Hollywood provides a complimentary Kennel Service for their park guests. Visit the Will Call window at the park entrance, and your pet will be escorted by one of their Guest Service Representatives to their facility.

Maybe they_ll train the dog to be a stunt dog, and put it in a movie. OK, just kidding.

DON_T leave the dog in the hotel. The dog won_t like it, and may trash the room, and you will have to pay for it.

  • you can_t bring him with you into the park, and I wouldn_t leave him in the car; it might get hot out, and the many passerby could upset him. even though he_ll be lonely, just leave him in his crate in the hotel room with water, food, and maybe a toy.

  • You may have to take him to a doggie hotel or kennel for the day if you bring your dog with you unless you trust he won_t trash the hotel room...
